- Thursday, May 23, 4:55 PM Occidental Petroleum (OXY) may consider selling its overseas assets or splitting into three separate companies to fund a stock buyback and improve its share price, CEO Steve Chazen reportedly told UBS analysts this week. "Chazen's commentary clearly implied that any restructuring strategy would likely focus on larger-scale restructurings with potential to 'move the needle' in terms of valuation," UBS writes. Comment! - Tuesday, May 21, 6:12 PM Four companies ignoring their shareholders' votes, according to Theo Francis: Impax Labs (IPXL), where three directors were retained despite failing to reach 50% approval; Occidental Petro (OXY), which counted 55M non-voting shares as voting against a proposal; Hecla Mining (HL), which left open a say-on-pay vote for an extra month; and NYSE Euronext (NXY), which continues to thwart the right to call special shareholder meetings. 1 Comment [Energy, Healthcare, Financials]
- Monday, May 20, 11:49 AM Focus will shift to its Bakken assets after proposed changes at Hess (HES), but Raymond James analysts say any breakup value is priced in, and Occidental (OXY) offers a better opportunity for "future multiple re-rating via breakup." OXY, for a while embroiled in a tug of war for leadership, is talking about potential spinoffs now that CEO Steve Chazen has a firmer grip on the company. Comment! [Energy]
- Monday, May 20, 10:47 AM Abu Dhabi’s state oil company is under pressure to take a quick decision on which foreign companies will get concessions in one of the few major oil producing areas in the Persian Gulf where international companies are still allowed to hold an equity interest. Prequalified companies are BP, XOM, RDS.A, TOT, STO,OXY, E, PTR, OJSCY.OB, Inpex, Korea National Oil. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, May 3, 4:30 PM Occidental Petroleum (OXY) elects former Ambassador Edward Djerejian as Independent Chairman of the Board, and former U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham as Independent Vice Chairman. Djerejian has served as an independent director of OXY since 1996, and recently chaired the corporate governance committee. (earlier: Irani out) 2 Comments [Energy]
- Friday, May 3, 3:15 PM Irani is out: LA Times says the longtime Occidental Petroleum (OXY +3.2%) chairman withdraws as a nominee to serve a new term on the board, and is absent from today’s shareholder meeting. It's not known who will become the next chairman, but replacing Irani on the board is Edward Djerejian, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and an assistant secretary of State. (earlier) 3 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, May 3, 11:39 AM It's rare for chairmen to lose their jobs, but today's shareholder meeting may mark the end for Occidental Petroleum (OXY +3.4%) Chairman Ray Irani after a nearly 30-year legacy at the oil and gas producer. Irani could wind up with a consulting contract with OXY through the end of 2014, says a person familiar with the board’s thinking, particularly given his Middle East contacts. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 3:36 PM Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) declares $0.64/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 2.91%. For shareholders of record June 10. Payable July 15. Ex-div date June 08. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, May 1, 8:26 AM Investor advisory firm Glass Lewis switches sides and now supports the re-election of Occidental Petroleum (OXY) Chairman Ray Irani at Friday's shareholder meeting. On Monday, OXY announced its plan for Steve Chazen to stay on as CEO as well as changes to its governance and compensation programs, which were supported by advisory firm ISS. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Tuesday, April 30, 12:36 PM Occidental Petroleum's (OXY +1.4%) decision to keep its CEO through the end of 2014 was "very positive," Deutsche Bank's Paul Sankey says in upgrading the stock to Buy from Hold with a $112 price target, up from $90. Sankey says the move clears the way for OXY to "shrink to grow" - i.e. spin off businesses, which would prompt major share buybacks and makes sense in a high oil price environment. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, April 29, 8:45 AM Steve Chazen will continue as CEO of Occidental Petroleum (OXY) through 2014 "with the board's full support," amid a conflict with Chairman and former CEO Ray Irani, who reportedly wanted Chazen to be replaced immediately. OXY also announces changes to corporate governance, including cutting annual common stock grants to non-employee directors by at least 20%. Shares +0.9% premarket. Comment! [Energy]
- Thursday, April 25, 6:43 PM Occidental Petroleum (OXY) CEO Stephen Chazen says low share prices mean it likely will buy back shares and will take a closer look at options for selling assets or parts of the company. Putting midstream assets into an MLP also is an option that would generate cash but it would be "fine-tuning rather than a major mover," preferring steps that would "move the needle a lot rather than tweaking." 1 Comment [Energy]
- Thursday, April 25, 9:19 AM More on Occidental Petroleum's (OXY) Q1 results: Cut domestic well and operating costs to $14.06/bbl from $16.44 a year ago while achieving overall cost reduction of ~19% Y/Y, helping to absorb the impact of falling oil and gas prices. Realized prices fell 9.2% for crude oil, while natural gas liquids prices dropped 23%. Average daily oil and gas production rose 1.1% to 763K boe/day. Comment! [Energy, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:34 AM Occidental Petroleum (OXY): Q1 EPS of $1.69 beats by $0.14. Revenue of $5.87B misses by $0.53B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Monday, April 22, 10:28 AM Occidental Petroleum (OXY -0.5%) partner Abu Dhabi National Oil says it expects to finish their $10B Shah gas development project by the end of 2014. The technically challenging project to process ~1B cf/day of sour gas into 0.B cf/day of usable gas in the remote desert is vital to temper the UAE's growing gas imports. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Saturday, April 13, 8:25 AM When looking for dividend stocks, Kelley Wright believes a company isn't necessarily more attractive just because it pays a higher dividend. The key is when a stock's current yield is at the high end of the range of past yields; a strong balance sheet and a consistent pattern of higher earnings and rising dividends help too. Wright's top 10: APD, ADM, KO, COP, CVX, OXY, PEP, RS, TXN, WAG. 19 Comments [Quick Ideas]
