More on Pan American Silver's (PAAS) Q1 results: The increase in revenue was due to higher quantities of metals sold except zinc and lead, but partially offset by lower realized prices for silver, gold and copper. Q1 silver production rose 14% Y/Y to 6.3M oz.; gold production rose 65% to 32.1K oz. Total cash costs were $11.33/oz. of silver, below 2013 guidance of $11.80-$12.80.

The firm cuts its EPS and cash flow/share outlook 58% and 34%, respectively, to $0.74 and $1.55, well below consensus. Also, SLW -7.5%, HL -8.5%.

Pan American Silver (PAAS) +1.5% premarket on news it produced a record 6.9M oz. of silver during Q4 and a new annual production record of 25.1M oz. for full-year 2012. PAAS also produced a record 32,381 oz. of gold during Q4, lifting annual production to a record 112,283 oz. Expects production of 25M-26M oz. of silver and 140K-150K oz. of gold in 2013.

Deutsche Bank downgrades Pan American Silver (PAAS -2.3%) to Hold from Buy, saying that while the firm still sees upside to gold and silver prices, many precious metal firms are not generating sufficient EPS to justify upside based on P/E multiples of Industrial peers. Hecla Mining (HL -2.5%) and Silver Standard (SSRI -1.9%) are cut to Sell, citing a lack of earnings growth.

Jason Burack $PAAS used to be the leader of the pack as far as primary silver miners go. That's no longer the case. Inefficient company now.
