Smartphone Intelligence Report: Research in Motion, Palm and Apple [view article]
Harvitpal - I have been using a PALM Treo for 6 years. I was an early adopter of Palm Treo 600 and then kept upgrading (now a 700p). However, I hate the email functionality. I have to program it to send/receive every hour because anything more and it drains the battery much quicker, and I miss my calls. RIMM's advantages, among others:1) Phone and Email are mutually exclusive. You won't miss a call even when receiving an email.
2) Battery life is impressive. Much better than anything else out there that is constantly online.
2) Sleeker phones with better screens (see Curve and 8830).
3) Built in GPS in 8830 without adding a bulky component.
4) Fast internet.
Businesses that have already signed up to RIMM love it and I don't think they will switch to anything else easily. Now RIMM is targeting the consumer market (Pearl, Curve etc.). It barely has any market share outside the business world. So it has a lot to gain. Reply

I am not sure I understand the fuss around RIMM. They have a bunch of servers that deliver email from an array of email servers! I can get my gmail email on my GPRS phone. Yes its not push email. But thats today! What happens in six months time when i get my 3G/4G phone which works just like my PC client and requests an update of my email every two-five minutes! All i need is a client on my mobile PC device, my Linux device etc that talks to my email server. Work or personal, POP or SMTP, Exchange, Lotus notes, who cares! The push advantage that RIMM has and their centralized arcitecture will be superceeded. They have nothing that differentiates them selves a few years out. In the mean time everyone has picked up on the game. RIMM is a short. Reply

Why should we care what the members of the Change Wave Alliance think or plan for? This fundamental question has never been answered in these never-ending articles coming from your organization. If you could publish research that establishes a relationship between your members choices with the consumer at large, I might pay some attention to this. ReplyTrent

On the order of magnitude I am talking about sell-through vs. sell-in becomes relatively insignificant. For example, you could take out PALM's total sales from RIMM's numbers to reflect channel build and RIMM would still be much larger. For Apple to reach RIMM's scale on either a sell-through or a sell-in basis would be fairly impressive. ReplyConclusion

Comparing apples and oranges - PALM reported sell-THROUGH, sales to end-customers; RIMM reported sell-IN, sales to, for example, carriers. It's not clear what Apple reported/desires.All, however, make the major portion of their money from sell-IN. Reply

Smartphone Intelligence Report: Research in Motion, Palm and Apple [view article]
Most iPhone owners that I know of have never had a smartphone before. I think Apple's genius in the iPhone is not so much relying on grabbing existing smartphone market share but rather in drawing in people (like myself) that had no interest in learning to use a complicated devise and yet would like to use some smartphone features. This should easily bring in 1 to 2 millions units sold per quarter at the current price point - and should do much better when price cuts (and new models) come along.... Palm Keeps Missing Obvious Opportunities: Can This Turnaround Succeed? [view article]
I've owned probably 5 different Palm devices, the most recent a Treo. And I'll never buy again due to it resetting every once in a while (even while on the phone)--totally unstable. And the company has believed that introducing model after model differentiated only slightly is a winning strategy, is surely heading down the tube.Yield ideas: Yieldferret.com Reply
Palm’s Uncertain Future: Can Foleo Compete With the iPhone? [view article]
I don't know whether you'll be happy or sad to read this, but the Foleo will ship with MS Office support."Documents To Go allows users to create, view and edit native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint compatible files on a Palm Foleo mobile companion. In addition to retaining all original file formatting with InTact Technology(TM), Documents To Go works with the built-in Foleo email application to access a wide variety of attachments, from sales contracts to sports schedules...."

I doubt I'll ever have a real need to create and/or edit a Powerpoint doc on my Treo 650 with Docs2Go 9, but I did just to test it. Based on this, the Foleo should have no problem. It obviously will not have the desktop app's full feature set, but when all the data in your presentation changes at the last minute, the Foleo will save your butt without straining your back.
I'm not likely to consider one until it has full support for real video. I'm not big into video now, which is largely due to the small screen size. With a 10-inch screen I likely will get into watching video on the run.
I disagree with you in regards to the Foleo having its own telephony ability. The Foleo is small enough to be near you most every where ever you go. But it is far too large to be the constant conpanion that the Treo now is.
And now that the screen and keyboard have a (presumed) solution, I believe that Palm will develop a touch screen Treo with a Dynamic Keyboard Areo, like the TX has a Dynamic Input Area. I don't want one, but many people likely will.
Further, now that the Foleo can do most everything we need to do on the go, people can invest in laptops whose price is based on its abilities and features than its feats of miniaturization.
Lastly, only time will tell if Palm's initial focus on mobile email and internet will work. If the Foleo makes it to a second generation, unlike the LifeDrive, then its chances are good. Reply
