- Thursday, May 16, 9:26 AM Palo Alto Networks (PANW) +4% following an upgrade to Overweight from Morgan Stanley. The upgrade comes ahead of Palo Alto's May 30 FQ3 report. Cisco, which Palo Alto has been taking firewall share from (along with Juniper and Check Point), reported a 4% Y/Y drop in security sales yesterday afternoon. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 4:00 PM Palo Alto Networks (PANW -1%) closes modestly lower in the wake of Intel's (INTC) deal to buy Finnish security hardware vendor Stonesoft. Stonesoft's product line includes next-gen firewalls, and though its presence in this space doesn't compare with PANW's, Intel's resources and McAfee's security software (could allow for richer content analysis) stands to make it a tougher rival. Stonesoft, which relies on a security engine that can be modified to support different types of hardware, also makes intrusion prevention systems, but shares of Sourcefire (FIRE +0.5%), the leader in this market, have closed slightly higher. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 4:35 PM Fortinet (FTNT) -13.5% AH after warning it expects Q1 revenue of $134M-$136M and EPS of $0.10, below a consensus of $140.4M and $0.12. Billings are pegged at $147M-$149M, below guidance of $158M-$162M. The company blames a failure to close a few U.S. service provider deals (F5's warning also cited telco demand), EMEA/Latin America weakness, and inventory shortages and product timing issues. Asia-Pac and U.S. enterprise demand was healthy. With shares trading at 36x 2013E EPS, there wasn't much room for error. Did Ken Goldman's departure play a role? CC at 5PM ET (webcast). CHKP -1.3%. PANW -0.8%. FIRE -1.5%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 1:30 PM Next-gen firewalls (NGFWs) address a security hardware market Gartner thinks will be worth $9B in 2016, writes Needham, which is starting NGFW leader Palo Alto Networks (PANW +3.7%) with a Buy and $70 PT. Needham sees NGFWs, which support deeper content analysis than traditional firewalls, addressing several major security trends. Among them: the need to control "risky" Web services such as chat, the rise of APT attacks, the mobile and BYOD trends, and the network complexity and security risks spawned by virtualization and software-defined networking. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, March 25, 10:16 AM Lazard cuts Check Point (CHKP -1.9%) to Neutral; the firm says channel checks indicate share losses to Palo Alto Networks (PANW) are growing. Palo Alto's next-gen firewalls are causing headaches for incumbent firewall vendors Check Point, Cisco, and Juniper thanks to their ability to support deeper content analysis on an integrated platform. The company recently bragged of an 85% win rate in deals it competes for. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 9:16 AM Palo Alto Networks (PANW) -4% in spite of its FQ2 beat. On its earnings call, PANW guided for FQ3 revenue of $100M-$104M and EPS of $0.05, in-line with a consensus of $101.9M and $0.05. With shares respectively trading at 9.4x and 142x FY14E sales and EPS, the Street was looking for more. Billings +82% Y/Y to $124.3M (more multi-year subscription/maintenance deals), well above revenue of $96.5M; gross margin -70 bps Y/Y to 72.2% thanks to the launch of the mid-range PA-3000 series. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 28, 4:13 PM Palo Alto Networks (PANW): FQ2 EPS of $0.05 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $96.5M (+70% Y/Y) beats by $3.21M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Wednesday, February 20, 3:43 PM Nabors Industries' (NBR) weak Q4 should pressure management to take stronger restructuring steps, Goldman's Waqar Syed says; shares are undervalued vs. peers, "a major change for a company that has historically traded at a premium." Of all 67 stocks on Goldman's Conviction Buy list, NBR is one of nine eyed for 30%-plus upside; the others are PANW, AAPL, HAL, TUMI, PRU, F, THOR, CBST. 1 Comment [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, February 14, 10:09 AM SourceFire (FIRE +2.6%) rallies after catching an upgrade to Buy from UBS: the firm cites the growth potential of the next-gen firewall market (rival PANW is the early leader in this space) and the possibility of a buyout (from Cisco, perhaps?). Shares jumped on Tuesday as word spread Pres. Obama would sign an executive order to increase government cybersecurity investments, but sold off yesterday after it happened. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, February 12, 1:51 PM Security hardware stocks rally on expectations Pres. Obama will issue an executive order meant to bolster government spending on cybersecurity following tonight's State of the Union. Intrusion prevention system leader SourceFire (FIRE +8.8%), which received 28% of its sales from the U.S. government in Q3, is the biggest winner, but Fortinet (FTNT +4.3%), Check Point (CHKP +1.2%), and Palo Alto Networks (PANW +1.1%) are also higher. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 31, 3:59 PM Strong earnings from Citrix, Fortinet, and SGI have translated into solid gains for a number of enterprise IT stocks. Winners include security hardware firms Sourcefire (FIRE +4.9%), Palo Alto Networks (PANW +2.8%), and Check Point (CHKP +3%), and server adapter card/interconnect switch makers Mellanox (MLNX +6.2%) and Emulex (ELX +2.6%), WAN optimization leader Riverbed (RVBD +1.7%), and Citrix virtualization/cloud management rival Red Hat (RHT +2%). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 5:49 PM Fortinet (FTNT) guides on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $138M-$141M and 2013 revenue of $625M-$635M, mostly above a consensus of $139.6M and $618.9M. The company expects 2013 EPS of $0.60-$0.61, in-line with a $0.61 consensus. Shares +16.3% AH thanks to the guidance and a strong Q4 beat. Recent downgrades aren't looking too smart. Up in sympathy: PANW +3.1%. FIRE +4.9%. CHKP +1%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 7:14 PM F5 (FFIV -0.8%) is entering the firewall hardware market: the company's new BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager combines several security and network management features offered in the past as modules for its core application delivery controller products - that could be necessary to stand out in a market that features tough competition from incumbents Cisco, Juniper, and Check Point, as well as upstarts such as Palo Alto Networks. (PR) (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 22, 1:15 PM Fortinet (FTNT -1.5%) slips after catching a downgrade to Market Perform from JMP, which is worried about rising competition. Fast-growing Palo Alto Networks (PANW -0.5%) has emerged as a rival of sorts for Fortinet: while Fortinet's UTM appliances deliver better performance, Palo Alto's next-gen firewalls offer a more integrated set of tools for analyzing Web content and apps. Cisco, meanwhile, says it's willing to spend aggressively to turn around its security ops. Comment! [Tech]

The difference between the $PANW #IPO valuation and $OCZ shows that being private is better. Public markets no longer reward growth. - View all 0 replies
