- Monday, May 20, 3:28 PM Shares of Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol (EC -1.8%), whose earnings continue to disappoint as it struggles to make new discoveries, hit a new 52-week low and fall below 4K pesos for the first time in 18 months. EC has ~2B boe in proven reserves and a $97B market cap, which makes its ratio of market value to reserves much more expensive than neighboring Brazil's Petrobras (PBR). Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 11:58 AM After reporting a 4% Q/Q decline in crude oil output due to ongoing maintenance shutdowns at aging offshore platforms, Petrobras (PBR +6.6%) expects crude oil production to surge in 2014 as it ramps up output on seven new production platforms to be installed this year. Maintenance work will continue to undercut output in Q2 before picking up in H2. (also) Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 11:08 AM Petrobras (PBR +6.7%) is upgraded to Buy from Neutral with a $28 price target (from $23) at BAML to reflect reduced risk perceptions following stronger than expected Q1 earnings. The firm thinks earnings are bottoming and set to enter a period of growth, production should grow from H2 and rank among the fastest vs. peers, and valuation remains low in light of the strong growth outlook. Premarket gainers: SINA +22%. CPTS +20%. PPHM +8%. NIHD +8%. THC +7%. PBR +6%. HCA +9%. HMA +5%. MCO +5%. RDN +5%.
Losers: NTE -27%. GORO -9%. NBG -8%. RVLT -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, April 18, 2:46 PM MEMC (WFR +2.2%) outperforms after announcing its SunEdison unit has struck a deal with Brazilian energy giant Petrobras (PBR) to build a plant with 1.1MW of installed capacity. Construction will start at the end of this year, and SunEdison's Renewable Operations Center will manage the plant following completion. The deal isn't especially large, but could pave the way for larger contracts with Petrobras down the line. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 2:37 PM Petrobras (PBR +2.4%) CEO Maria das Gracas Foster denies that Brazil's government has ordered it to help billionaire Eike Batista's troubled EBX Group out of its financial pickle but confirms PBR has discussed using a liquefied natural gas terminal that could potentially be developed at the Acu port under construction by Batista's LLX Logistica. 3 Comments [Energy, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 9, 2:28 PM Recent weakness in international crude and fuel prices combined with a stronger domestic currency are helping Petrobras (PBR +5.4%) narrow its losses, Citi says, substantially lowering PBR's fuel price discount to parity to 6.3% and 7.5% for gasoline and diesel, respectively, vs. an average 11% at last month's diesel price hike. The firm sees room for further fuel price rises in the next six months. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 19, 11:56 AM Petrobras (PBR -2.6%) expects to raise a net $4.3B in global capital markets each year to fund its investment plan over the next five years, its CFO says, as increased crude oil production during 2013-17 covering the $236.7B investment plan allows it to reduce net financing needs by 50% vs. the 2012-16 plan. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 7, 11:33 AM Petrobras (PBR +5.1%) extends yesterday's big gains as Credit Suisse upgrades shares to Outperform from Neutral with a $25 price target, believing the move to raise diesel prices may be the beginning of a change in attitude and the company may have hit an "inflection point." Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 6, 11:59 AM The increases in diesel prices made overnight and in January should add ~$3.6B to Petrobras' (PBR +11.4%) bottom line in 2013, Credit Suisse estimates. Despite a likely deterioration in PBR's finances and expectations that crude oil output will remain stagnant this year, "we could be in front of a value opportunity to [PBR's] vast growth potential," the firm says. Losers: AVAV -25%. TFM -11%. AEO -9%. SOHU -8%. QIHU -5%. NBG -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, March 6, 8:48 AM Petrobras (PBR) +9.3% premarket after announcing it is raising the wholesale price of diesel fuel 5%, a move aimed at cutting losses from selling fuel at prices below world-market levels. Diesel is Brazil's most-used motor fuel, powering most of the country's trucks, railway locomotives and heavy machinery. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 5, 10:46 AM Petrobras (PBR -7%) hits a 52-week low after its Q4 report shows debt rose to 2.77x earnings before EBITDA, above the company's own limit of 2.5x. "It's hard to see how this result shows a company improving its operations and fiscal discipline," says a Brazilian oil company analyst. Profit would have fallen if not for a large and "unusual" jump in financial earnings, which the analyst says will "raise questions." Comment! [Energy, Earnings, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Monday, February 4, 9:47 AM Petrobras (PBR -2.2%) says two oil and gas production platforms under construction at a Brazilian shipyard collided on Saturday after high winds dislodged their moorings. Prior to the collision, PBR had said construction of the 140K bbl/day P-63 platform was scheduled for completion in the middle of this year. It is unclear whether deployment of the P-58 platform scheduled for 2014 would be delayed. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, February 1, 3:35 PM Brazilian oil workers will vote to approve a five-day strike at Petrobras (PBR +2%) over the company's latest profit-sharing offer, union officials say. The last five-day strike at PBR took place in July 2008, when oil workers walked off the job to protest work issues and profit-sharing proposals. The strike cost the company ~63K bbl/day of crude oil production. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 31, 2:17 PM Problems caused by fuel subsidies, project delays and soaring costs at Petrobras (PBR -2%) are spreading to the wider Brazilian economy, undermining PBR's suppliers and raising credit risks. To fight cost overruns, limit rising debt and make up for $8B-plus in refining losses, PBR reportedly is squeezing suppliers and investors by making them wait longer to receive payment. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX, On the Move]
