Pep Boys: Staggering Potential for Improvement [view article]
Shoddy management practices, hires the lowest people on the totem pole (I worked there), worst product lines in the sector. Sure its got potential, but so does every car in the junk yard. Get out from behind your computer and go visit some of thier stores. Then visit every other auto parts retailer. PBY does everything wrong.

Thanks Eli Hoffman for your response. I am a big believer in free speech, and news publishers should be able to report any rumor it believes might be true, such that President Kennedy was killed by the CIA.

But in this case Seeking Alpha was totally irresponsible. There have been numerous unfounded rumors that all sorts of entities are about to throw capital at Lehman. But if a short seller says something negative about the firm that is probably true, he is investigated by the SEC.

Several hundred million shares of LEH traded yesterday. For you to print a rumor late in the day that they got an offer for 11 dollars when they stock was at 8 you damn well better have a source.

Etrade (ETFC) reported out during Q2 results in July that they have stakes in Fannie and Freddie and that they sold some and will be liquidating the rest due to the potential government takeover. I emailed Etrade yesterday at their investment line with this question. Does Etrade own any fannie or freddie? Etrade reponded that they liquidated the rest of their prefered July 31st and he also referanced Q2 results and future guidenance. So basically they Own 0 and the time of the government takeover. Does anybody know what impact the Fannie/Freddie decision will have on write-downs on individual mortgages? Is it likely that there will be a policy of accepting a more lax approach to restructuring individual mortgages? Reply

This looks like a dartboard. Pick 3 sector ETFs, 3 little followed stocks
    and sleep better at night.

4-5 index etfs probably would do it as well. don't tell me you can keep track and properly analyze and follow all of your holdings. way too many.
    zero value added.

The DIY craze crosses so many lines. These days, it's usually the way to go, but sometimes it's just not the best bet, even from a financial standpoint. Good thread on that here:

except for some basics the newer cars cant really be correctly repaired by the do it yourself people.the mom -pop mechanics charge 1/2 of what dealers charge & you can speak to the person who does the work.my 2 cars go to the same person for many years.he is not cheap but fair, good & reliable(great service & del.when promised)so that im lucky as i still drive my 1991 caprice.around here sales tax on an average new car $1,200 & up.
