Bernstein sends some positive waves to Leap Wireless (LEAP +2.8%) and MetroPCS (PCS +5.1%), saying the recent selloff over concerns of heightened competition in pre-paid wireless is overdone, although it concedes the market is "structurally unstable." Firm says that by focusing on densely populated areas, LEAP and PCS will achieve profitability comparable to the major carriers even at much lower prices.

Deutsche Telekom (DT) is reportedly seeking a partner for T-Mobile, one that could help it finance investments in networks with fast data transfers. MetroPCS (PCS), Clearwire (CLWR) and AT&T (T) are all potential candidates, but the company might also look for a purely financial investor from outside the sector.

MetroPCS (PCS) CEO Roger Linquist thinks it's time to shake up the cozy oligopoly of mobile phone providers with a nice price war, and envisions the $10 phone bill. As the local and long distance markets have withdrawn, the Big Four wireless networks take in more money than ever on carrying more calls than ever and own 90% of the market.

Leap Wireless (LEAP -10.3%) and MetroPCS (PCS -7.2%) are downgraded to Neutral by J.P. Morgan on worries about saturation and competition in the discount wireless market. Both stocks have shed about half their value in four months.

MetroPCS (PCS) spikes 12% amid rumors of merger talks with Leap Wireless (LEAP +4.2%) and reports from Reuters that MetroPCS is talking not to Leap but to banking advisers about potential deals. [[PCS]] now up 7.6%.
