Tough Week for Ethanol Stocks [view article]
Ethanol is a bubble. It make NO SENSE technologically, since you use more energy than you get. It ONLY exists to feed farm subsidy money to Republican Bible Belt States. ReplyCaracciolo
Ethanol Going From Panacea to Pariah - WSJ [view article]
Not true....people have not waked up yet! If they were awake they would know that ethanol produced from food sources such as corn is only temporary. Ethanol produced from cellulos will be the primary replacement for the majority of fossil fuels or the next 20 or 30 years until hydrogen and electric vehicles are produced and available in quantities to completely replace it. Construction of cellulosic ethanol plants in the U.S. will be ongoing in 2008. Japan already has one and China is contructing one now. All from cellulos. Ethanol made from corn is much maligned; the media hates it but it is here to stay; I am going to build a sugar cane based plant in Hawaii and forever get rid of $4,00/gallon gas! ReplyJackson
Five Oil and Alternative Energy Developments to Watch [view article]
Strobe, I'm thinking not for a while. I don't see any real competitive advantage, and they've consistently diluted their shareholders because they haven't made money for so long. The cash that they raised is now falling in real value due to inflation. And the telecom equipment sector continues to consolidate, and that hurts the component vendors. What's to like about the stock to make me cover? Not a lot.Willtom, that's really fascinating. Can you provide any more details and tell us about what you do? Reply

Don't Bet the Farm on the Ethanol Bull - Barron's [view article]
I don't like the implication that "smart money" does not include farmers. The fact that they now own 4% more of Iowa farmland does not mean that "dumb money" is now owning Iowa. Perhaps they have simply done well enough in the last few years with rising corn prices to finally be able to buy back more farmland, having wanted to do so for some time? Be careful with the hidden implications in your writing, Mr. Hoffman. ReplyFive Oil and Alternative Energy Developments to Watch [view article]
as someone who works in laos and buys nothing but chinese and vietnamese equipment, you're right on. we just bought several $400 motorbikes for our workers, and our coffee farmers are buying them like hotcakes. ReplyEthanol Growth Faces Tremendous Obstacles [view article]
The four points you quoted about ethanol's natural limitations are correct and present an interesting contrast with butanol, which is a different alcohol-family chemical that can just as easily be made from the same feedstocks as ethanol using similar processes or others (such as Fischer-Tropsch) that are well-established. Here are the four points, rewritten for butanol:• has 95% of the energy content of gasoline (and generally produces more power and lower emissions in internal combustion engines due to more complete combustion)
• can be transported in any pipeline that can carry gasoline or oil
• can replace a gasoline grade point of sale with minor infrastructure changes (e.g. pump re-calibration)
• has (at this time) little support by car manufacturers
BP and DuPont are developing butanol biofuels. Competing against ethanol, given the 3 advantages listed above, my money is on butanol. Ethanol is a good MTBE replacement but a relatively poor fuel. Reply

Ethanol Update: Challenges and Opportunities [view article]
What about the companies using woodchips and municipal waste instead of food sources. Check out the nbr(nova biosource fuels) they have begun to use various methods to produce ethanol. by 2nd qtr of 2008 they will be fully functional and mass producing barrells of the product. BFRE(bluefire ethanol fuels) is in the plant building phase, but have caught on that non food source produced ethanol is economical and yields far greater product than corn or fat source ethanol. Lastly is GFET(Guf Ethanol) prior to energy bill being signed they were in full swing to begin with the corn based ethanol method, but now has to regroup and follow the lead of the 6 companies that the govt. has invested milions into to produce non food source ethanol. Jim Cramer is noxious to investors financial independence. The reason he has a following is from his acting style, not what he actually says. Next time please also provide Stephen Colbert's stock tips. Reply
