- Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 11:06 AM PepsiCo (PEP +2.6%) is sharply higher following word last night that Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund has taken a 2.3M share stake in the company. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, November 14, 2011, 6:24 PM Nelson Peltz, known for his investments in big food and beverage companies, reports that his Trian Fund Management owned 2.3M PepsiCo (PEP) shares as of Sept. 30, according to a 13-F filing. The fund also bought 95,000 CBS shares, and exited positions in Time Warner (TWX), Peet's Coffee and Tea (PEET), and SPDR Gold Trust (GLD). 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Saturday, November 12, 2011, 8:30 AM Active stockpicking has come in for a bit of a bad rap (and no less so with high-profile misses by managers like Bill Miller), but Donald Yacktman is still beating odds - Morningstar looked at him for "manager of the decade" - and his outperforming portfolio now is loaded up on techs like Microsoft (MSFT) and Cisco Systems (CSCO) to go along with standbys like Coke (KO), Pepsico (PEP) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ): “I can’t remember a time when so many quality companies were selling at low prices compared to alternatives." 19 Comments [Quick Ideas, Tech]
- Friday, November 11, 2011, 4:14 PM PepsiCo (PEP +0.5%) lags the general market today after Janney Capital cuts its rating on the beverage company, citing the company's relative valuation and higher spending trends. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 10, 2011, 9:30 AM PepsiCo (PEP) continues its attempts to diversify beyond its core soft drink business and expand its international presence, acquiring Brazilian cookie manufacturer Mabel. The move comes on the heels of PepsiCo's September acquisition of Argentine cookie concern Dilexis. 1 Comment [Consumer, M&A]
- Friday, November 4, 2011, 3:52 AM PepsiCo (PEP) is selling its Chinese bottling ops to a beverage unit of instant noodle and drinks maker Tingyi Holdings, reports say (I, II, III). In return, PepsiCo will receive a stake of under 10% in the unit with an option to increase it to up to 49%. The deal will enable PepsiCo access to Tingyi's large Chinese distribution platform. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 12:34 PM Pepsico (PEP +0.2%) wins a bidding war for Brazilian Mabel with an offer estimated to be between 800M-900M reals ($460M-$518M). It looks like Pepsico aims to dominate the biscuit industry, as the deal adds 1.5M biscuits to the firm's production capabilities and follows the acquisition of an Argentinian biscuit company in Sept. Comment! [M&A, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 11:41 AM Facebook struggles to land big-company ad spends after firms find they can reach large audiences with low-cost social media campaigns that go viral if well-executed. Pepsico's (PEP) Frito-Lay division demonstrated the phenomenon when it landed a Guiness World Record 1.57M Facebook "fans" in 24 hours without a traditional advertising buy. Though Facebook doubles its H1 revenue to $1.6B, it was small-business advertising that led the charge - not Fortune 500 companies. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 3:33 PM A trio of consumer groups files a complaint with the FTC alleging that PepsiCo (PEP -0.5%) uses online marketing campaigns in a deceptive way to target teens in order increase sales of its Doritos brand. The larger issue: As the lines between content and marketing blur, what role will government regulators have in patrolling social media outlets? Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Monday, October 17, 2011, 1:24 PM "The politics of Russia is not what worries us," says Pepsi (PEP) CEO Indra Nooyi, unperturbed about Vlamimir Putin's return to power (did he ever leave?). Nooyi says Russian leadership has been and is expected to continue to be "friendly to investment." 4 Comments [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Friday, October 14, 2011, 11:08 AM Pepsico (PEP -0.6%) reportedly is closing in on a JV with German dairy company Theo Müller Group that would give it a foothold in the fast-growing U.S. yogurt market. The move would be a big step forward in Pepsico's drive to become a global dairy powerhouse and boost growth in its largest market. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, October 13, 2011, 5:09 PM Goldman Sachs recommends its High Quality Stock Basket of 50 top stocks over the S&P 500. The 18 stocks that scored highest based on its screening methodology: ECL, CTSH, STJ, PEP, TJX, SO, CHRW, WAG, SPG, COH, GD, YUM, NOV, SYK, CL, UTX, CAM, AMZN. Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 11:42 AM Pepsico (PEP +3.3%) CFO Hugh Johnston dismisses the idea of splitting the company in two, saying he doesn't see the value in it. Struggles in Pepsico's drinks business while its Frito-Lay snacks business performs well have increased calls for a breakup patterned after Kraft (KFT) and Sara Lee (SLE). But PEP's Q3 earnings were a pleasant surprise in a weak economy. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 7:06 AM Pepsico (PEP): Q3 EPS of $1.31 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $17.6B (+13% Y/Y) beats by $350M. Sees high-single-digit PES growth for FY11. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 12:05 AM Notable earnings before Wednesday's open: ASML, HST, INFY, PEP, PGR 1 Comment [Earnings]
- Thursday, September 29, 2011, 11:52 AM Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS +3.3%) outperforms the market and gains a nod from an analyst on CNBC (video). Quietly, shares of DPS have outgained KO and PEP this year, registering a 7.7% gain vs 5.1% and -4% respectively for its rivals. Comment! [On the Move, Quick Ideas, Consumer]
