- Thursday, September 6, 2012, 1:52 PM PepsiCo (PEP +0.5%) CEO Indra Nooyi shrugs off the debate over limiting soda intake by telling CNBC her company can make drinks that are both great tasting and healthy. Letting consumers choose will benefit the company, she notes. Nooyi also seems to like the position her company holds with the Y-chromosome market heading into the NFL season: "You can't watch a game in a man cave without doing Doritos, or Pepsi and Lay's." 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 9:19 AM The beverage industry could see a major merger in Europe with Britvic in talks with AG Barr over a potential $2.1B deal. According to reports, PepsicCo (PEP) could enter the fray with Britvic the maker and seller of its products in the U.K. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX, M&A]
- Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 8:32 AM A former top exec from PepsiCo (PEP) publicly backs Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to curb soda intake in NYC. David Burwick is now the president of Weight Watchers North America (WTW), leading at least a few cynics to question the wisdom of keeping potential customers lean. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 11:48 AM The war on soda: A local ballot measure in Richmond, California to tax soda drinks starts to draw national attention in advance of November's election. If the measure passes, Richmond would be the first city in the country that placed a per-ounce tax on sugary drinks and could set off a wave of copycats. Meanwhile in NYC, details on Mayor Bloomberg's anti-obesity plan will be unveiled in less than two weeks and will surely have sugary drinks in focus. 23 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 8:23 AM PepsiCo (PEP) continues to tinker with a new artificial sweetener that will help Diet Pepsi stay sweet longer. The company was considering importing versions of the soft drink sold in other countries into the U.S. before hitting upon a better solution. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 10:19 AM Energy drink sellers PepsiCo (PEP -0.3%), Monster Beverage (MNST -0.8%), and 5-Hour Energy maker Living Essentials are in receipt of subpoenas from New York's AG asking for more information on the manner in which energy drinks are marketed and advertised. For the most part, the broadly-defined energy drink sector has stood outside the purview of the FDA, but are catching more notice from consumer groups now that retail sales are soaring (up 16% last year). 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 12:27 PM A coalition opposed to California's Proposition 37 has collected $25M from corporate backers including Monsanto (MON), DuPont (DD), PepsiCo (PEP) and Coca-Cola (KO), more than any other initiative. The legislation, if approved, would make California the first state to require labels on genetically engineered crops or processed foods that contain genetically engineered fruits or vegetables, such as corn, soybeans, sugar beets and Hawaiian papayas. 12 Comments [Commodities]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 1:23 PM You need an alkaline diet. Expect that to be the next message pounded out by Hollywood celebrities and health advocates as beverage firms eye the high-margin product category. The theory is that alkaline-infused drinks help offset the effect of acid-forming drinks such as coffee and alcohol. Skinny Water aims to kick off the new craze with a drink that adds magnesium, zinc, potassium to some old-fashioned H2O, but perhaps waiting in the wings is Coca-Cola (KO -0.1%) and PepsiCo (PEP -0.1%). 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Sunday, August 19, 2012, 4:15 AM Lawyers who earned hundreds of millions suing Big Tobacco are now going after major food companies such as PepsiCo (PEP), Heinz (HNZ) and General Mills (GIS) for wrongly labeling products and ingredients. One gem is calling sugar "evaporated cane juice," while rather more scarily, a ConAgra (CAG) "propellant" in Pam cooking spray includes petroleum gas, propane and butane. 14 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 10:18 AM PepsiCo (PEP +0.5%) loses the top dog at its Gatorade business after longtime exec Sarah Robb O'Hagan resigns. The new president of the division, Debra Crew, takes over in the midst of the company seeing its market share slowly slip away to rival Coca-Cola's Powerade. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 3:07 PM PepsiCo (PEP -0.1%) pulls its G Series Fit line from store after sales disappoint. It's back to the lab for the product, with a refresh slated for 2014. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 8:00 AM Shares of Monster Beverage (MNST) slip a bit more, now down 5.9% premarket, after the company discloses that an unnamed state AG is investigating its marketing practices. UBS is out with a warning that other energy drink manufacturers were named a related subpoena. On watch: COT, PEP, FIZZ. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, August 9, 2012, 7:34 AM PepsiCo (PEP) announces a distribution deal with Diamond Star to distribute its beverage brands in Myanmar. The company says the untapped market has great potential and plans to also explore opportunities to invest in agricultural development projects in the nation. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 3:46 PM Fears that the U.S. drought will drive up food prices next year are mostly unfounded, WSJ's Josh Mitchell writes, calculating the average consumer will spend only an extra $2.73/month. Food accounts for only ~14% of consumers’ daily living expenses, and given that prices for other items are falling or subdued, overall inflation likely will remain muted. - Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 8:32 AM Beverage companies spend millions on water conservation projects to ensure a stable supply of their primary ingredient after long-term forecasts for the industry show scarcity of water as one of the biggest risks to the industry. Big players such as PepsiCo (PEP), Coca-Cola (KO), Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS), Molson Coors (TAP) created an alliance in 2006 to address the concerns, but this year's prolific drought has raised awareness to even greater heights. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 1:40 PM Food price increases resulting from the Midwest drought that ravaged crops might not be as steep as some expect, according to some analysis. Fruit and vegetables crops are relatively stable due to irrigation, while corn ingredients typically only make up a a small portion of many common packaged food items. For the time being beef and milk prices could actually dip as farmers sell off cattle that they can't feed effectively, though next year consumers could take the hit when the dwindling number of cattle directly affects beef and dairy prices. 7 Comments [Consumer, Commodities]

selling my shares of PEP after a 3 month hold. 6.5% gain. Thinking of switching into MCD, holding it in cash for now - View all 1 replies

FortSumter: Watch the support around $90.50. If it bounces off on strong volume, probably a good play.
