I invested $10,000 in MO over 25 years ago. With re-invested dividends and splits, I now own 20,000 shares of MO, 20,000 shares of PM and 10,000 shares of KFT (I sold about 3,000) My current income from these stocks is over $70,000 a year. Owning a stock that pays no dividend is like owning a business and not being paid a portion of the profits. Only a moron would do that. MO has been in my portfolio for many years. Get a dividend and write options on it. 2nd to none for me. ReplyDividend Paying Stocks: Don't Discount Them Just Yet [view article]
dividends are very important because its money the stockholder has to save, spend or reinvest. he has gotten a return on his investment. the rise of a stock means nothing tillyou sell.if yo hold long enough it might even tank to below where you bought it. a dividend cant be taken back.i got a very fair dividend from gm for many years.when they cut the dividend by 1/2 i got out.boy am i glad. The so called "dividend fad" stocks have outperformed non-dividend paying stocks over the years:dividendgrowth.blogspo...
The beauty of dividend paying stocks is that they allow you to compound your returns by getting money over fixed periods of time and then reinvesting them back. Dividends also give investors much more visibility than share buybacks.
By the way, AAPL used to pay dividends from 1987 untill 1995. After the company stopped paying dividends, the stock tanked from 31.87 at year end 1995 to 13.13 by the end of 1997.

Wow. You completely missed the SKF (UltraShort Financials) as one of the worst performing ETFs this past week. It was down nearly 21% from the close of 174.46 on Friday, July 11, to the close of 138.00 on Friday, July 18. That would place it at the top of your list of worst performers this week.I imagine this has something to do with SKF being a B.I.G. recommendation. You probably don't want to draw attention to that right now, do you?
You guys completely missed BAC as a key earnings report next week in your other blog post, and now this? You need to do some more homework if you want to be taken seriously. Reply

If the bullish commodity ETFs were the biggest decliners this week, then it only makes sense that some of the biggest winners would have been the leveraged commodity shorting ETFs. Why have these been omitted? Perhaps these new short commodity ETFs/ETNs will play a critical role going forward to keep commodity prices in check. Banning commodity traders at this point would be shooting ourselves in the foot! Reply
