To DaveBiz, above, try DVY and PEY, but don't expect an increase in share price...they've been in a downtrend since 2005. Reply

It is amazing when the lender and buyer of last resort ... the FEDERAL GOV'T OF THE UNITED STATES ... decides to begin buying equities, i.e., FNM, FRE, etc. We are going to look back on this time a era of extremely bad judgement. How can BAC and C show stuning performance when they announced huge losses?? Just boggles the mind. Reply

Income is fine. But has the market priced in the possibility of an Obamba presidency, where dividends would be taxed much higher than they are today?

If not would any strictly dividend play not be a risky play over the next couple of months, at least until we find out which bum will have Air Force One for the next four years?

ICAN: Note my representation, it is Astra Zeneca and Merck. That point should cover debate about past performance. Management winding up with stockpiles of cash to reinvest in new drugs as well as begin a migration into Direct to Consumer Advertising and slashing costs in Physician Marketing is shrewd recent management decisions. I am in this space, it's not how a company winds up in a certain position by 2005, it's the decision making made to correct a situation. Pfizer has filed several major pattents, conducting further M/A's into bio companies and is accutely aware of the political situation of a Democratically controlled House (hostile to big pharma) and is reacting appropriately to it (going into DTC advertising is the example). They are investing overseas for clinical trials. All of these are great management decisions.

The gentlemen did not ask how they performed prior to 2008, he asked if anyone had an opinion on potential future performance. At $18, you can either wait a few months until after elections which I recommend before buying or buy now. Either way, it is 5-6 year play and PFE has major dough to stick around the market and further become more efficient in-between.

Another ETF is the S&P Dividend Aristocrats, consisting of companies that have consistently raised their dividends. I read about it in an article written by an S&P advisor. But the S&P website only has an 8-digit symbol (which doesn't work) and S&P in New York did not know what the regular symbol is. If anyone does, please add it to comments. Reply

With inflation for this year predicted in the low 4% range you need at least 5 1/2% to break even after taxes. Of course a Roth Ira could get by on 5%. Reply

Is Pfizer's Viagra Suffering with the Economy? [view article]
I think you are looking too hard for negatives to justify your job. Specific to your comment, generally YoY results are more meaningful than comparing random quarters. There may be some seasonality to Viagra results, or a random quarter may have been news driven (i.e., blindness news scare) which is relatively short lived. Reply

Is Pfizer's Viagra Suffering with the Economy? [view article]
I think the "shrinking" trend has to do with the "softness" in the economy causing men to focus their attention on "increasing" the size of their other assets rather than thinking about "stretching" their physical assets. I think they are just prioritizing their concept of what they should made "big"!!! Who knows??? Reply

Interesting analysis. I would also like to know how you would have faired if you reinvested the dividends. Also if the analysis can distinguish between companies that raise the dividends consistently and the ones that do not. Reply

Good idea, after going trough some gut wrenching twists and turns. As an income investor I have started doing this same thing and have added already some of the mentioned stocks and will be moving more money toward this type. Heck, even my investment grade preferreds have been extremely volatile. Reply

"Pfizer has lots of cash, good management and yes, wonderful track record."

the only part of this that's true is PFE has lots of cash. good management? wonderful track record? only if you never held the stock in the last 8 years could you possibly think either. PFE has underperformed every one of the major pharmas (BMY MRK LLY) over the last 10, 5, 4, 3 and 2 years.
