A good article idea ... comparing the performance of the "quant" funds against the major averages. Reply

Update: We added the new First Trust 130/30 ETN to the list, and in the Further Reading section a link to an article about it by Murray Coleman, that quotes Roger Nusbaum. Reply

Yeah, maybe people should take care to read a fund's prospectus, or at least the brief factsheet on morningstar, before investing? Jeez. Reply

Interesting post - maybe you could explain a bit more about the anomaly with the proshare Ultra ETFs. Does the same situation hold good with their ultrashort ETFs as well?
( I am too lazy to find and read their prospectuS!!!!!)

Did Specialty ETFs Provide a Cushion From the Fall? [view article]
Most all professional are looking for a way to beat the market without suffering too much volatility. For most risk adverse clients holding bonds reduces beta and returns. For the more aggressive investors who does not mind a higher beta and just want to gain a significant edge on the market are looking for the ETF that will out perform the "market". For an example, isn't the RSP a slightly better core holding than the SPY?

One idea for a negatively correlated ETF is one composed of companies that are in the "deep value" category. It would lag the market and in a market turn should out perform significantly.

    What are your thoughts?

Appreciate the summary but regard a "bump-in-the-road... that lasted little more than a week as too short for firm conclusions. A real bear market of many months, whenever it finally arrives, will be much more telling. Most of these instruments are relatively new and haven't yet been tested under the stress of a major, extended decline. As well, the bulk of the foregoing ETFs attempt to exploit the "security-selecti... route to 'alpha' rather than "market-timing&qu... alternative. Too bad the ETF manufacturers haven't given us much choice on the latter. With the advent of inverse ETFs, the "timing" route should now be a cinch - providing, of couse, they could find a reliable TAA methodology to run it. I've developed one but haven't been able to find a manufcturer willing to sponsor a product so far. Any suggestions? Reply
