Many of the names were already in bankruptcy, but many others seem to be headed there. I noticed how many stocks are trading below $1 in my system (StockVal), and it blew me away. I then created a list of 290 names that trade below $1 and are down over 90% in the past year. While I won't publish all of the names, I will say that they are from all sectors of the economy. Suffice it to say, most of these companies are carrying large debt-loads.

By sector, here are some of the names you might know as a consumer or an investor:

We then grouped the stocks based on whether they have a rising or falling 50-day moving average.

Given the large number of stocks in the S&P 1500 currently trading below $10 per share, we also filtered the list to show only the five most volatile stocks (50-days rising and falling) trading in double digits. As shown, most of the volatile stocks that are in uptrends come from the energy and materials sectors, while the most volatile stocks with declining moving averages come from the financial sector, which even after last week's gains are still in downtrends.

Video will be everywhere, and that likely includes places where you would rather not see it (i.e. watching a promo for American Gladiators in the back of a video-enabled taxi on the way to the airport).

Essentially, the systems envisioned in the research note exist today. But what is this new area? Basically, these systems take content from their source (a digital file) and push the file across the internet to a player (computer) in a store, a taxi (American Gladiator, here we come) or an airport waiting room.

Planar's New Plan Likely to Succeed

Planar's (PLNR) stock has sure made for an exciting investment gamble this year. After almost doubling our money in the stock earlier in the year, we've now given back nearly all our gains after Wednesday's drop. However, despite the volatility and the loss of all our paper profits, we're still holding onto the stock. The reason: We like the new, aggressive direction the company is headed in and we plan to hold on to see how this story plays out, even if it takes longer than expected for the company to reignite revenue and earnings growth.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name, Planar (PLNR) provides LCD monitors and flat panel displays to a wide variety of end markets. The company has had a rough couple of years as more of its products have become commodotized, resulting in pricing pressure and market share losses. We liked the company when we first invested because we spotted a strong balance sheet, a new, experienced, management team intent on keeping the company cash-flow positive despite the rough operating environment in the company's legacy business, and the potential for renewed growth in high-end display markets.

Today, with the release of its quarterly earnings, Planar finally gave passive investors a detailed summary of the company's new long-term business plan. The stock cratered on the news, probably because the new initiatives will decrease earnings in the coming quarters and more importantly entail a somewhat risky acquisition which will deplete a good portion of the company's cash. For a full recap of the details, I suggest you read the earnings press release.
