After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: AXU +3%. EGN +3%. NCTY +2%. GTE +2%. PMCS +2%.
After-hours top losers: NSPR -3%. TRX -2%. TIVO -2%. WDAY -2%. ZOLT -2%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, February 1, 1:34 PM Telecom chipmakers Cavium (CAVM +7.5%) and PMC-Sierra (PMCS +13.7%) soar after delivering Q4 beats (I, II), and contribute to a decent rally in chip stocks (SOXX +1.9%). Cavium guided on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $68.5M-$70.5M and EPS of $0.17-$0.19 vs. a consensus of $69.1M and $0.17. PMC guided on its call for Q1 revenue of $123M-$132M, largely above a $124.7M consensus. The numbers come amidst growing optimism (I, II) about 2013 telecom capex. Peers Broadcom (BRCM +2%), Marvell (MRVL +3.1%), and LSI (LSI +4.7%) are all doing well. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

Thursday, January 31, 5:45 PM
After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: ADNC +26%. TSYS +13%. PMCS +7%. N +7%. ABAX +5%.
After-hours top losers: CPSI -9%. OPLK -6%. BEBE -4%. ELX -4%. LTM -4%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, October 26, 2012, 10:40 AM AppliedMicro (AMCC +26.9%) skies higher following it FQ2 report. Though results were ho-hum, the beaten-down telecom chipmaker guided on its earnings call for FQ3 revenue to rise 8%-12% Q/Q (consensus is for a 7% increase). It also announced a partnership with Red Hat (RHT) and ARM (ARMH) to develop server designs based on AppliedMicro's ARM CPUs. Evercore has added AppliedMicro to its Conviction Buy list, touting the company's backlog, share gains, and declining inventories. Rival PMC-Sierra (PMCS +2.1%) is up a bit. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 11:20 AM Though it beat Q3 estimates, Altera (ALTR -6.8%) is diving thanks to guidance for a 6%-10% Q/Q drop in Q4 revenue - the Street had been expecting a slight increase. During its earnings call, Altera partly blamed the decision of a top customer to migrate two high-volume FPGA designs (4% of Q3 revenue) to ASICs, though it also admitted it's seeing broad-based weakness. Rivals are off, as are some other chipmakers with strong telecom exposure. XLNX -1.5%. LSCC -2.1%. CAVM -3.5%. PMCS -3.2%. AMCC -3%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 4:13 PM PMC-Sierra (PMCS): Q1 EPS of $0.06 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $132M (-16.1% Y/Y) misses by $1.6M. Shares -4.7% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 4:24 PM PMC-Sierra (PMCS +8.5%) soared in late trading thanks to a report the telecom chipmaker recently held talks with potential buyers, though it's added a deal "is not considered imminent." PMC has been under pressure from activist firm Relational Investors to consider "strategic alternatives." Sources add rivals Broadcom (BRCM) and Marvell (MRVL) are "logical bidders" for PMC, though analysts think its exposure to legacy technologies such as SONET optical gear could be a problem. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 9:07 AM PMC-Sierra (PMCS) +2.7% premarket after its board raises the amount of stock authorized for repurchases to $315M, comprising a new buyback program for up to $275M in common stock on top of an existing $40M authorization. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, February 6, 2012, 5:34 PM More on PMC-Sierra (PMCS): Q4 EPS comes in line but misses on revenue. Earnings more than doubled as the chip maker booked a big tax recovery, but revenue declined 12% from Q3 and 4% Y/Y due to lower sales growth. Shares -6.5% AH. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 17, 2012, 4:33 PM Telecom chipmaker PMC-Sierra (PMCS) rises 3.3% AH after activist money manager Relational Investors discloses it has a 7.17% stake in the company, and asserts PMC's board "may need to consider broader strategic alternatives." PMC's growth has been held back in recent years by its exposure to legacy technologies such as T1/T3 lines, ATM switches, and SONET optical gear. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 9:39 AM Goldman Sachs slaps Sell ratings on Intersil (ISIL -0.2%) due to "structural challenges" and Microchip Tech (MCHP -0.6%) because of its failure to grow its microcontroller share or earnings ahead of peers during the past two years. Goldman also cuts SanDisk (SNDK -1.7%) and PMC-Sierra (PMCS +1.1%) to Neutral, while raising Atmel (ATML +3.8%) and Altera (ALTR +3%) to Buy. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, October 28, 2011, 12:02 PM JPMorgan downgrades PMC-Sierra (PMCS -10.2%) to Neutral following a mixed Q3 report, criticizing PMC’s inability to drive faster growth: New product areas "have yet to generate meaningful revenues. Moreover, Q4 guidance suggests 20% turns business (normal turns rate) in a tough demand environment, which suggests that Q4 guidance may not be conservative enough." Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 4, 2011, 10:00 AM A day after rival Vitesse (VTSS) cut its guidance, Mindspeed (MSPD -2%) does the same, though its cut is more modest. Mindspeed expects FQ4 revenue of $40.5M, below prior guidance of $42.2M-$43.9M, and attributes the shortfall to weakening demand in the communications infrastructure market. Will competitors AMCC and PMCS warn next? Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, September 12, 2011, 11:13 AM In addition to Cavium (CAVM +4.5% - previously), several other network processor vendors are up following Broadcom's (BRCM -2.3%) buyout of NetLogic (NETL +50.2%), as the deal raises hopes of further moves from big-name chipmakers. EZCH +6.5%. IPHI +7%. MLNX +3.1%. MRVL +2.1%. AMCC +1.3%. PMCS +1.2%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, September 12, 2011, 7:33 AM Broadcom (BRCM) agrees to buy NetLogic Microsystems (NETL) for $3.7B in a definitive merger agreement expected to close in the first half of 2012. The firm calls the deal a "strategic fit" that should deliver financial results. Rivals in the space potentially seeing interest: LSI, CAVM, MRVL, VTSS, FSL, PMCS, AMCC. Comment! [M&A, Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
