Like some other chipmakers, PMC-Sierra (PMCS +0.7%) isn't showing any ill effects from delivering a soft earnings report (I, II). Even Q1 guidance (provided during PMC's earnings call) for revenue of $130M-$136M, well below a $156M consensus, isn't enough to trigger a selloff. Likely helping is a healthy book-to-bill ratio of 1.2. However, Auriga (Hold) is still worried about the impact of slowing telecom capex.

More on PMC-Sierra (PMCS): Q4 EPS comes in line but misses on revenue. Earnings more than doubled as the chip maker booked a big tax recovery, but revenue declined 12% from Q3 and 4% Y/Y due to lower sales growth. Shares -6.5% AH.

Telecom chipmaker PMC-Sierra (PMCS) rises 3.3% AH after activist money manager Relational Investors discloses it has a 7.17% stake in the company, and asserts PMC's board "may need to consider broader strategic alternatives." PMC's growth has been held back in recent years by its exposure to legacy technologies such as T1/T3 lines, ATM switches, and SONET optical gear.

Broadcom (BRCM) introduces what it claims is the first 40-gig transceiver chip for long-haul optical networks to be made with regular silicon (CMOS). As SemiAccurate notes, rival products are typically made using more costly, power-hungry materials. Broadcom has recently been stepping up its efforts to compete with the likes of AMCC and PMCS in the growing market for 40G networking chips.

Jefferies' Mark Lipacis thinks Cisco's (CSCO +5.9%) FQ1 report (I, II, III) is a positive for the networking giant's chip suppliers, arguing Cisco and others are primed to rebuild chip inventories in 1H 2012 after slashing them this fall. Names Lipacis likes: BRCM, MRVL, AVGO, ALTR, IPHI, PMCS, ONNN, TXN.

JPMorgan downgrades PMC-Sierra (PMCS -10.2%) to Neutral following a mixed Q3 report, criticizing PMC’s inability to drive faster growth: New product areas "have yet to generate meaningful revenues. Moreover, Q4 guidance suggests 20% turns business (normal turns rate) in a tough demand environment, which suggests that Q4 guidance may not be conservative enough."

A day after rival Vitesse (VTSS) cut its guidance, Mindspeed (MSPD -2%) does the same, though its cut is more modest. Mindspeed expects FQ4 revenue of $40.5M, below prior guidance of $42.2M-$43.9M, and attributes the shortfall to weakening demand in the communications infrastructure market. Will competitors AMCC and PMCS warn next?

Vitesse Semiconductor (VTSS) becomes the latest chipmaker to cut its guidance, warning FQ4 revenues will be in a range of $29M-$30.5M, compared with a prior forecast of $35M-$38M. Vitesse primarily blames the cut on customer inventory reductions and economic fears. Rivals AMCC, MSPD, and PMCS haven't yet warned.
