Puma (PMMAF.PK) warns sales could fall 1% to 5% in 2013 after the retailer saw Q1 come in below expectations. The company says it will make a clean break from the strategy of its former CEO of 18 years as a focus on fashionable lifestyle products sputtered in Europe and China. Analysts don't think the weakness at Puma is a stark warning sign for Nike (NKE) or Adidas (ADDYY.PK).

Athletic shoes in focus: Analysts think the strong quarter in North America by Adidas (PMMAF.PK) confirms that demand for athletic shoes is outpacing other retail categories. Nike (NKE +2%), Foot Locker (FL +0.9%), and Finish Line (FINL +3.1%) could surprise to the upside as new lines sell well and a shift in the product mix toward higher-margin basketball shoes helps boosts results - while don't count out Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS +2%) and Under Armour (UA +0.9%) to also catch some of the action.

A healthy performance by Adidas (PMMAF.PK) in Q1 bodes well for Nike (NKE) as demand for higher-margin products helped boost profitability. What to watch: Nike wants to get back on track in China which accounts for over 10% of its total revenue and the strong performance by Adidas in its golf category in new markets could translate well for Nike.
