Tuesday, April 23, 6:19 AM The Senate yesterday voted 74-20 to limit debate on legislation that would force retailers to collect taxes for online sales, opening the way for a final vote on the measure, which could take place this week. Thursday, February 7, 9:14 AM Retail ETFs (XRT, XLY, PMR, RTH) suddenly look a bit more attractive with a rush of department stores reporting stronger-than-expected January same-store sales. Though part of the gains were from a calendar effect and pent-up demand due to the fiscal cliff drama, in the larger context key firms (JWN, M, URBN) are proving that their omni-channel approach to sales through seamlessly tying in mobile devices to web and brick-and-mortar strategy is working. Friday, November 23, 2012, 3:34 AM Long lines snaked around city blocks last night as retailers such as Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT) opened late on Thanksgiving. Others, including Best Buy (BBY) and Macy's (M), waited until Black Friday. Despite the queues, the National Retail Federation reckons the number of shoppers will fall to 147M over the Thanksgiving weekend from 152M last year, and that the growth in retails sales will slow to 4.1% in November-December from 5.6%. Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 7:24 PM Retailers appear to be optimistic about the Christmas holiday season ahead, despite gloom in other sectors about a potentially worsening global economy. Department store operator Kohl's (KSS) says it expects to add 10% more workers this year, while a poll by the Hay Group found that 57% of retailers were keeping holiday hiring at about the same level as a year ago, while about 36% said they planned to hire more.
