- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 8:08 AM Potash (POT) -2.2% premarket after cutting its FY2012 EPS guidance to the low end of its projected $2.80-$3.20 range, and seeing Q3 at the low end of its prior $0.70-$0.90 range (analyst consensus $0.83). The change primarily reflects lower than forecast potash sales volumes due to delays in new contracts with buyers in China and India. Also: MOS -1.6%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 11, 2012, 11:51 AM CF Industries (CF +2.7%) and other fertilizer stocks rally after the U.S. government says corn inventories will fall even more than expected following the Midwest drought; global inventories will hit 117M metric tons as of Oct. 1, down from an estimate of 124M last month. "This report signals there is absolutely no supply cushion," a trader says. Also: MOS +2.1%, POT +2%, AGU +1.6%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 10:54 AM Lazard Capital downgrades Mosaic (MOS -1.3%) and Potash (POT -2%) to Neutral from Buy, warning investors not to consider yesterday's dip in MOS a buying opportunity. The firm expects potash prices to drift lower despite strong crop fundamentals which will support fertilizer demand, and doesn't see any catalyst that would lead to meaningful stock price gains. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 11:13 AM Ag stocks are sinking after Mosaic's (MOS -4.6%) weaker than expected results and conference call comments that fertilizer prices haven't risen in tandem with grain prices due to a weaker macro environment and greater supply uncertainty. Potash shipments are expected to decline in 2012 vs. 2011 before rebounding in 2013. POT -2.9%, CF -1.7%, AGU -0.4%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 10:38 AM Production at Potash's (POT -0.3%) second biggest mine likely will resume sometime today, after rescuers doused a fire that temporarily trapped 20 workers. The Rocanville mine, which has annual operating capacity of 2.7M metric tons, normally runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and had been operating at normal speed prior to the fire. Comment! [Commodities]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 2:54 PM Twenty Potash (POT -0.9%) workers are trapped underground after a fire at its Rocanville mine in Saskatchewan; the company says the miners are safe. The mine, one of six potash mines owned by the company, has annual operational capacity of 2.7M metric tons. (also) Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, September 17, 2012, 5:41 PM North American potash inventories fell nearly 9% in August at the producer level but were still one-third larger than the five-year average, Potash (POT) reports. Miners are sitting on large stockpiles due to reduced demand from India, the world's no. 2 potash buyer. POT is lowering its surplus a bit by shutting down its Lanigan mine in Saskatchewan for nearly a month. Comment! [Commodities]
- Thursday, September 13, 2012, 4:54 PM "Potash equities have enjoyed several years of a ‘super cycle,’ but that era appears poised to end," NBF's Robert Winslow predicts, going against the grain. Backing up his thesis is that annual potash demand just isn’t that great; Potash Corp. (POT) recently estimated global demand at ~53M metric tons this year, well off its original projection of as much as 60M. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, September 13, 2012, 1:32 PM Potash (POT) declares $0.21/share quarterly dividend, 50% increase from prior dividend of $0.14. Forward yield 1.96%. For shareholders of record Oct 15. Payable Nov 05. Ex-div date Oct 11. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, September 13, 2012, 11:20 AM Given the drought, scary-low ending grain stocks, and record farm incomes, how much longer will the companies selling stuff to farmers underperform the broader market? The Agribusiness ETF (MOO) has had a decent summer, but has fallen behind the S&P by 2000 basis points over the last year. Top holdings include: Monsanto, Potash, and Deere. 2 Comments [Commodities, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 2:05 PM Citi upgrades Agrium (AGU +2%) to Buy, believing nitrogen demand will be strong in the coming year as farmers prepare for a rebound in the corn harvest and demand for ag retail products will be strong. But in cutting Potash (POT -1.6%) to Neutral, Citi says India and China remain a risk to the market, and it sees flat potash prices through next year. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 1:38 PM Russian-based potash producer Uralkali says it expects India's potash imports to be reduced to 3.5M-4M tons - as well as limit the room for possible price increases - due to cuts in government subsidies on phosphatic and potassic fertilizers. The company cites high potash retail prices and below-average monsoon rains, which caused weak consumption/demand. Comment! [Global & FX, Commodities]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 2:53 PM Potash (POT -2.4%) shares weaken further after BHP's move to delay a final decision to build its Jansen potash mine project. Scotia says the BHP delay was widely expected, and investors are more concerned over declining utilization rates by potash marketer Canpotex and Belarusian Potash's brownfield projects starting up over the next three years. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 2:38 PM BHP's decision to postpone its Jansen potash project and Vale's (VALE) move to shelve its Kronau project amid weakening global demand for commodities and falling resource prices expose the risks of Canada’s heavy reliance on resource extraction. Saskatchewan faces losses of potential tax revenue every year a project flounders, and the effects could ripple across the country. Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, August 20, 2012, 12:22 PM Expect further production curtailments of 0.85M-1.65M metric tons this year, for a total of 2.85M-3.75M metric tons, by Potash (POT -0.9%), TD Securities forecasts. Last week, POT said its Lanigan mine will be shut down from Sept. 15-Oct. 13; the firm says this will hit production by ~300K metric tons. The firm expects potash curtailment of ~3.4M metric tons next year. Comment! [Commodities]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 3:52 PM After corn prices spiked to new highs following today's USDA report, prices ended lower as cuts to demand estimates helped offset the expected declines in corn yields. "The USDA is behind the market and [traders] expect another reduction in yield," a pro says. Food shares are mixed: ADM -2%, HRL +0.1%, HSH -1.8%, TSN +1.3%, MON -2.1%, POT +0.8%, CF -2.1%, AGU -0.1%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
