- Friday, June 15, 2012, 8:39 AM Dahlman Rose cuts its price target (to $38 from $41) and earnings estimates while maintaining a Sell rating for Potash (POT), citing the likelihood of sluggish potash export markets for the rest of the year and high inventories contributing to weaker pricing. The firm is bearish on the sector, also with Sell ratings for CF, UAN and IPI; AGU, MOS and RNF are Holds. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 9:22 AM More on Canada GDP: The Feb. decline - the worst print in more than 2 years - comes as mining and oil & gas extraction declined 1.6%, led by a 7% decline in mining, led by a 19% decline in Potash mining - a dive surely telegraphed by weak Q1 sales of the fertilizer reported by Potash (POT) and Mosaic (MOS). Improvement, however, is on the way, says Mosaic. Comment! [Global & FX, Commodities]

[On the Move] - Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 8:26 AM Mosaic (MOS) +4.7% premarket after forecasting FQ4 volumes for both potash and phosphates in the upper end of its guidance ranges in light of rapid acceleration in demand. "Global demand for crop nutrients has increased sharply... We expect demand to continue to grow, and crop nutrients to remain affordable." Rival POT +3.7% premarket. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 6:25 PM Much of the world's recent increased agricultural production and fertilizer demand has come from China, but both may be hitting a wall. Among forces driving the slowdown: China is nine years ahead of schedule on production of staples, it's running out of arable land, and it's finished converting land to fertilizer-heavy crops like corn. It could mean trouble for POT, MOS, AGU, IPI. 14 Comments [Global & FX, Commodities]
- Monday, April 16, 2012, 8:56 AM Lazard Capital says potash inventories in North America increased 9% M/M in March after demand softened. The firm expects producers such as AGU, CF, POT, and MOS to see inventories start to decline again in April. 4 Comments [Commodities]
- Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 8:50 AM One reason for the continued bullishness on corn is a 4.3M ton reduction in world ending stocks thanks to higher-than-expected feed use demand out of China. Higher incomes = higher demand for meat. (earlier USDA report) 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 8:44 AM The USDA sees corn ending stocks unchanged from last month's estimate of 801M bushels. Soybean ending stocks are reduced to 250M bushels from 275M, wheat to 793M from 825M. It's a slightly bearish number for corn as consensus was looking for lower stocks, but owners of the grain don't appear to be in a mood to sell yet. Wheat and beans are indicated to open solidly higher. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Monday, April 9, 2012, 3:51 PM The USDA is expected to report tomorrow expected corn stockpiles at summer's end will be 37% below last year, and possibly the lowest level ever relative to usage. "There will be no relief for consumers until later this year," says an ag economist, and that's only if high prices (and good weather) lead to a bumper crop. MOS -7% in the past month? What gives? 8 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, April 2, 2012, 12:10 PM Farmers are expanding plantings into previously off-limit conservation lands as high prices make crops more profitable than re-upping with the Conservation Reserve Program. The idled land will take years of investment, plowing, and fertilizer application before becoming productive enough to be profitable again. 4 Comments [U.S. Economy]
