- Thursday, April 25, 8:16 AM Potash (POT) is scrapping its proposed takeover bid for Israel Chemicals, the fertilizer producer says in its Q1 earnings report. The takeover would have given POT control of the world's sixth-largest potash producer and boosted its share of forecast global production capacity this year to ~27%. Shares +1.7% premarket. 2 Comments [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 3:44 PM The fertilizer plant explosion in Texas could prove a long-term benefit to some companies in the sector, since it could slow the building up of new nitrogen fertilizer capacity in the U.S. and provide a competitive boost to entrenched producers such as CF Industries (CF +3%), Potash (POT +0.8%) and Agrium (AGU +1.1%), Citigroup says. 11 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, April 1, 8:38 AM Potash (POT) +1.6% premarket after J.P. Morgan upgrades shares to Overweight from Neutral with a $45 price target, as prospects for volume growth have improved since the end of 2012. While earnings have fallen since 2011 and POT has generated little free cash flow due to substantial investments to increase its potash capacity, the firm believes the long period of capital investment is coming to an end. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 28, 12:49 PM Mosaic (MOS +1.5%) would have concerns about a potential takeover of Israel Chemicals by Potash (POT), CEO Jim Prokopanko says in its earnings call. POT, which is attempting to gain majority control of ICL, is a partner with MOS and Agrium in Canpotex, the offshore selling agency for potash the three companies mine in western Canada. Comment! [Commodities, M&A, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 2:57 PM Potash (POT -1.5%) seeks to soothe Israeli fears over a possible acquisition of Israel Chemicals, Globes says, as opponents use deal talk for political purposes in upcoming local elections. POT believes Israel Chemicals has no choice but to merge if it wants to stay relevant in the global fertilizer market in coming years. 1 Comment [Commodities, M&A, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Monday, February 4, 10:14 AM Potash miner Prospect Global Resources (PGRX +17.7%) won't open its first mine until at least 2015, but the upstart U.S. company is shaking up the fertilizer industry by chipping away at Canpotex's near-monopoly. "We think Prospect Global is the best potash investment opportunity in North America," COR Capital says. "We like the geology, we like the location and the team they've put together." 1 Comment [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 31, 8:36 AM Potash (POT): Q4 EPS of $0.52 misses by $0.06. Revenue of $1.64B (-12% Y/Y) misses by $90M. Shares -3% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Commodities, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Monday, December 31, 2012, 12:55 PM Mosaic (MOS +2.1%), Potash (POT +1.9%), and Agrium (AGU +2.2%) trade higher after Canpotex, the fertilizer companies' offshore sales agency, announces a 1M-ton potash supply deal with China's Sinofert Holdings for 1H13. Though the deal involves a $70/ton price cut from the last contract between the parties (established in March), the Street is pleased in light of surging potash stockpiles. A deal between Canpotex and Indian buyers is expected in Q1. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 9:07 AM Mosaic (MOS) -5.2% premarket after cutting its forecast for phosphate and potash sales, citing uncertain supply contracts from China, which has been aggressively negotiating for lower potash prices. Canaccord Genuity lowers its rating to Hold from Buy, with a $55 price target cut from $65, in light of the outlook for potash; the firm also cuts Potash to Hold. POT -1.2%, AGU -0.9%, CF -1.5%. 1 Comment [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 7:57 AM More on Agrium (AGU) Q3 earnings: Company is hit by the drought as retail sales volumes off 10% Y/Y. Wholesale sales off 8.3% Y/Y. Potash gross profit of $23M, -77% Y/Y, Phosphate gross profit -43% Y/Y. Q4 EPS guidance of $1.50-$1.90 as sale volumes to be at or lower than 2011 Q4. Shares -6.7% premarket, also hitting POT -1.6%. (PR) Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 7:09 AM More on Potash (POT) Q3 earnings: FY2012 EPS guidance lowered to $2.40-$2.60, thanks to lower than expected sales to China and India. Potash sales of 2.1M tons, off from 2.2M a year ago. Average price of $429/ton, off 5% from a year ago. Phosphate sales of 900K tons, off from 1.1M a year ago. Average price of $537/ton, off 12.1% from a year ago. Shares -1.7% premarket. (PR) 1 Comment [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move, Global & FX]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 3:02 PM Potash (POT -1.9%) is downgraded to Sector Perform with a $48 price target by RBC after its profit warning yesterday, citing challenging potash fundamentals. RBC thinks 2013 will be a challenging year for POT, given its "outlook for softening potash prices and the risk that the company may need to reduce production." Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 8:08 AM Potash (POT) -2.2% premarket after cutting its FY2012 EPS guidance to the low end of its projected $2.80-$3.20 range, and seeing Q3 at the low end of its prior $0.70-$0.90 range (analyst consensus $0.83). The change primarily reflects lower than forecast potash sales volumes due to delays in new contracts with buyers in China and India. Also: MOS -1.6%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 11, 2012, 11:51 AM CF Industries (CF +2.7%) and other fertilizer stocks rally after the U.S. government says corn inventories will fall even more than expected following the Midwest drought; global inventories will hit 117M metric tons as of Oct. 1, down from an estimate of 124M last month. "This report signals there is absolutely no supply cushion," a trader says. Also: MOS +2.1%, POT +2%, AGU +1.6%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 10:54 AM Lazard Capital downgrades Mosaic (MOS -1.3%) and Potash (POT -2%) to Neutral from Buy, warning investors not to consider yesterday's dip in MOS a buying opportunity. The firm expects potash prices to drift lower despite strong crop fundamentals which will support fertilizer demand, and doesn't see any catalyst that would lead to meaningful stock price gains. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 11:13 AM Ag stocks are sinking after Mosaic's (MOS -4.6%) weaker than expected results and conference call comments that fertilizer prices haven't risen in tandem with grain prices due to a weaker macro environment and greater supply uncertainty. Potash shipments are expected to decline in 2012 vs. 2011 before rebounding in 2013. POT -2.9%, CF -1.7%, AGU -0.4%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
