    On Sunday it seemed that Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing was close to buying E.On's (EONGY.PK) U.K. power assets for $6B; now CNBC says American supplier PPL (PPL -1.7%) is close to a purchase, for $6B in cash. PPL bought Kentucky assets from E.On last year, in the biggest power-sector deal in years.

    Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing is said to be closing in on a £3.7B ($6B) deal to buy E.On's (EONGY.PK) U.K. power networks, edging out PPL Corp. (PPL), the last remaining rival in the auction.

    PPL (PPL +0.6%) will sell power-plant assets in Connecticut, Illinois and Pennsylvania to an affiliate of LS Power for $381M in cash. The assets represent 1,250 megawatts of capacity and the sale will mean a charge against PPL's Q3 earnings of $65M-80M.

    PPL (PPL) says it will issue $2.2B-$2.6B in common stock plus $750M-$1B in high-equity content securities, and raise $2.9B in corporate debt and bonds to finance its acquisition of the E.ON's (EONGY.PK) U.S. businesses. PPL +0.3 premarket.

    E.ON (EONGY.PK) has reportedly reached a deal to sell its U.S. unit, formerly known as LG&E. Duke (DUK), PPL (PPL) and a consortium led by Canada's Fortis are thought to be the only remaining bidders in the multi-billion dollar sale.

    Sources say Duke Energy (DUK) will buy E.On's (EONGY.PK) U.S. business in a deal worth $6B-7B. Others indicate Duke is a potential bidder but PPL (PPL) and a consortium including Australia's Macquarie Group are still in the running. (previously)

    E.On's (EONGY.PK) plans to rid itself of American operations could bring up to $6B with competing bids coming from Duke Energy (DUK) and PPL Energy (PPL). The German giant wants to concentrate on its home market - but also may want out of coal-fired utilities before any expensive laws take effect.
