Parkinson’s disease [PD] is the most common of the neurogenerative diseases affecting 1 in 100 people over the age of 60. Approximately 1.5 million Americans currently suffer from the disease and it is estimated that 60,000 Americans are newly diagnosed each year. PD is both a chronic and progressive disease.

Prana Biotechnology (PRAN), a tiny Australian company working for many years on a treatment for Alzheimer's disease [AD], announced Phase II trial results Monday that the company characterized as successful -- and the stock popped 40%-50% Tuesday.

The trial results, for those who care about these things, raise many future questions that will have to be answered by the FDA and about the future of AD drug development. That may happen when the company approaches the agency to move forward into Phase III trials.
