After-hours top losers: AIRM -15%. CIE -6%. LSCC -5%. AMD -5%. TAHO -4%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, April 17, 3:35 PM Shares of Proto Labs (PRLB -1%) are seeing some volatility late in the session in response to a negative article in SeekingAlpha this afternoon. The article accuses the company of spinning the impact of 3D printing on its business in the hope that some of the hype will boost its stock, but the technology could actually destroy the company. The article also notes heavy insider selling, but it's worth noting that the author is also short the stock as well. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 22, 6:01 PM Industrial prototyping firm Proto Labs (PRLB), sometimes hyped as a 3D printing play, says it has no plans to become a 3D printer maker. The company does, however, plan to make its first-ever acquisition in order to improve its manufacturing expertise. CEO Bradley Cleveland says his company plans to "maintain at least 25 percent top-line growth" in the coming years - analysts currently expect Proto Labs to grow its top line 25% this year, and 22% next year. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 12:51 PM Stratasys (SSYS -2.8%) slumps following a Neutral coverage launch from Sidoti, which has set a $76 PT. 3D Systems (DDD -4.4%), meanwhile, is adding to the losses it saw yesterday following news CTO/co-founder Charles Hull unloaded over half his stake. Also lower: PRLB -3.5%. XONE -2.7%. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, March 4, 8:18 AM Shares of Stratasys (SSYS) move 11.5% higher premarket after the company beats the estimates of analysts with its long-awaited Q4 earnings report. The 3D printing sector could see a boost from Stratasys' strong results which highlighted what the company's CEO calls "rapidly growing" interest in additive manufacturing worldwide. Peer watch: XONE +4.2%, PRLB inactive, DDD +4.9%. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, February 25, 9:16 AM 3D Systems (DDD) -9.5% following its mixed Q4 results. The 3D printer maker, whose 3-for-2 split goes into effect today, is guiding for 2013 revenue of $440M-$485M and $1-$1.15 vs. a split-adjusted consensus of $442.2M and $1.05. Q4 gross margin was 51.7%, -10 bps Q/Q and +460 bps Y/Y. Backlog +23% Q/Q to $11.4M. R&D spending (the subject of some criticism) +70% Y/Y to $7.8M (8% of revenue). SG&A +51% to $26.5M. Q4's 45% growth a slowdown from Q3's 57%. SSYS -6.5%. XONE -5.2%. PRLB -3.3%. CC underway (webcast). (PR) (slides) 11 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 1:12 PM Volatile 3D Systems (DDD -5.6%) continues to sell off in the wake of Citron Research's bearish report. Some industry peers are also falling: PRLB -4.1%. XONE -3.7%. SSYS -1.6%. Fidelity recently disclosed it bought 3.1M shares of 3D Systems in Q4, raising its stake in the company to 6.1%. 27 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 2:12 PM 3D Systems (DDD -5.8%) spikes lower after Citron Research declares it a "bubble stock" in a new report (.pdf). The short-seller compares the current hype surrounding 3D printing to the dot.com, real estate, and alternative energy bubbles, criticizes 3D's low R&D spending and aggressive M&A strategy (so have some SA writers), and accuses management of providing a torrent of misleading promotional rhetoric. Also lower: SSYS -6.3%. XONE -2.1%. PRLB -7.7%. 26 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News, Quick Ideas]
