Monday, November 19, 2012, 12:59 PM A plan by Senator Harry Reid to limit online gambling to poker, horse racing, and lottery tickets is given a fighting chance to make it through Congress after Mitt Romney failed to win the Presidency. Before any federal framework is in place, Nevada will allow intrastate online poker play in a "proof-of-concept" demo on how states can regulate the activity. Friday, October 26, 2012, 2:34 PM Nevada Governor Brain Sandoval sends a letter to Congressional leaders in support of efforts to legalize Internet poker under a federal framework. His state is the one of only a handful that have regulations in place to address online poker, but Sandoval maintains the industry has a "borderless element" state laws alone can't address. Monday, October 22, 2012, 1:45 PM As Governor Mitt Romney rises in the polls, industry insiders say the odds for legislation making online gambling legal in some form trail off. Though Romney hasn't been specific, his comment that he wants to make the Internet "family-friendly" is viewed as an indication he opposes opening up online play for cash. In the meantime, most gaming firms have been aggressively hedging their bets with forays into social gaming and non-cash playing options as they plan for the eventuality of Internet gambling. Thursday, August 9, 2012, 1:55 PM South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas lands the first approval in Nevada history from the state gaming board for the rights to operate an online poker site from within the state. If all goes well for the company, a poker site could be up and running by October. If all goes really well for the industry, the move will spark a regulatory framework. That's the word (video) from MGM CEO Jim Murren on the chances that online poker will become legal in the U.S. He says Internet gaming will pass in 2012, turning an illegal multi-billion dollar business into a legal one.
