- Wednesday, June 19, 2:42 PM Aside from Linn Energy (LINE +6%) (earlier), SandRidge Energy (SD +3.2%) also enjoys a sustained rise from Lee Cooperman's CNBC comments. He thinks SD's assets are worth close to $10/share and expects management changes in the coming weeks. The full list of stocks Cooperman likes (video): TCRD, ESRX, HAL, RIG, QCOM, MSI, CIM, S, DISH, ARP. 1 Comment [Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 18, 5:05 PM The next version of Surface RT (MSFT) will rely on both Qualcomm (QCOM) and Nvidia (NVDA) CPUs, Bloomberg reports. Though details are scant, one likely possibility is that Nvidia (the sole supplier for the first-gen RT) will power Wi-Fi-only models, and Qualcomm will power 3G/4G-capable models. The report comes as all signs indicate Qualcomm is set to displace Nvidia as the Nexus 7's CPU supplier. Meanwhile, Microsoft is selling the 32GB version of RT for just $199 (a 60% discount) to schools until Aug. 31, the latest in a string of aggressive promotions ahead of a refresh that could be announced at the upcoming BUILD conference. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 17, 2:32 PM With the help of Qualcomm (QCOM) silicon supporting the LTE-Advanced standard, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is set to release a version of the Galaxy S4 that can deliver twice the download speeds of current models. GigaOm isn't too impressed, pointing out Samsung appears to be adopting a simple version of LTE-Advanced that offers a technique for pooling spectrum bands (carrier aggregation). Meanwhile, Reuters points out many analysts have lowered their S4 sales estimates to ~7M/month from a prior ~10M/month, following order cut reports. That could be pressuring Universal Display's (PANL -1.5%) shares. Qualcomm has an early lead in supporting LTE-Advanced, but Broadcom (BRCM) and Nvidia (NVDA) aren't far behind (I, II). Comment! - Monday, June 17, 1:15 PM Google (GOOG +1.4%) roundup: 1) Google has settled a class-action suit over its plans to create Class C shares, and thus further cement Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt's control. The settlement compensates shareholders if the value of Class C shares differs 1%+ from their current Class A shares. 2) Specs leak for Motorola's X Phone - it reportedly has just a 720p display and dual-core Qualcomm (QCOM) MSM8960 CPU to go with a 10MP camera - and the next Nexus 7 - it has a quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064 CPU and dual cameras. 3) Ryan Lawler observes YouTube's top content creators are griping over ad prices and revenue splits, and looking for other options. But they're hesitant to completely leave due to YouTube's scale. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, June 13, 7:10 PM Broadcom (BRCM) is refreshing its 3G baseband/app processor line ahead of the arrival of its first 4G baseband chip (announced in February, but no volume production until 2014). The new BCM23550 processor sports four 1.2GHz. CPUs, Broadcom's VideoCore image-processing/streaming tech, and easy integration with the company's Wi-Fi Bluetooth competition. It's aimed at low-end Android phones in emerging markets (an area still seeing enormous growth), and will face competition from Qualcomm (QCOM - just refreshed its emerging markets lineup) and MediaTek. (Dec. '12 announcements) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 12, 4:52 PM Spreadtrum (SPRD) +24.3% AH after resuming trading in the wake of its big Q2 guidance hike. Mobile chipmakers with decent Chinese exposure are rallying in sympathy; in addition to the numbers, Spreadtrum's remarks about strong demand for low-end smartphones in China and other emerging markets are likely going over well. RFMD +2% AH. SWKS +3%. QCOM +0.5%. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 11, 6:05 PM As far as Qualcomm (QCOM) is concerned, Samsung's reported Galaxy S4 order cuts aren't a problem, says Morgan Stanley. The firm thinks the S4 weakness is being compensated by strength in the mid-range, where Qualcomm has more share, and thinks the company's June quarter is on track. Qualcomm is the biggest chip supplier for S4 models featuring a Qualcomm app processor - iFixit found 6 Qualcomm chips in the U.S. version - but Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa processor is used in many international units. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 4:44 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) will finally make the second half of its staggered $120M investment in Sharp (SHCAY.PK), buying ¥6B ($62M) worth of shares in the TV/display panel maker after delaying the move in March due to Sharp's failure to make sufficient progress towards producing mobile LCDs based on Sharp's IGZO tech that the companies are jointly developing. Qualcomm, set to own 3.5% of Sharp, is undoubtedly interested in seeing high-res IGZO displays propel demand for its Snapdragon processors. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 9:33 AM Topeka launches coverage on the chip sector. NXP (NXPI -1.5%), Broadcom (BRCM +1.3%), Amkor (AMKR +0.5%), Freescale (FSL -0.5%), and Rambus (RMBS +0.5%) have been started at Buy, and ARM (ARMH -2.1%), Qualcomm (QCOM -2%), Applied Micro (AMCC +0.3%), and Mellanox (MLNX +1.9%) have been started at Hold. Mellanox isn't exactly a chip stock, though the company does use internally-developed ASICs in its adapter cards and switches. Qualcomm may be pressured this morning by reports of Samsung Galaxy S4 order and forecast cuts (I, II) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 7:06 PM Qualcomm (QCOM +0.8%) roundup: 1) A year after acquiring DesignArt, Qualcomm has updated its FSM processor line to include 28nm chips for small cell base stations and other modular designs. Demand for smaller base stations is set to grow rapidly. 2) Qualcomm has updated two low-end, quad-core, Snapdragon processors launched in December (and aimed at China and other emerging markets) to support 4G. 3) Qualcomm states its top-of-the-line Snapdragon 800 processors will support Windows 8.1 RT hardware this fall; the PR leads GigaOm's Kevin Tofel to think Qualcomm is the favorite to power the next version of Surface RT. RT demand has underwhelmed thus far. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 5:53 PM In a slight reversal of fortune, the ITC has ruled AT&T's versions of the iPhone 3GS (AAPL) and iPhone 4, and the 3G versions of the iPad 1 and 2, violate a standards-essential Samsung (SSNLF.PK) patent, and has issued a limited U.S. ban order. The ruling, which only covers 3G Apple hardware not relying on Qualcomm (QCOM) baseband chips, is final, but Apple can appeal to a federal court and/or ask the White House to intervene. Apple might also demand the patent be licensed under FRAND terms. U.S. iPhone 4 sales are still meaningful (for a few more months, anyway), but 3G iPad 2 sales are likely miniscule, and the 3GS and original iPad have been discontinued. AAPL -0.7% AH. (official ruling) 23 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 1:44 PM Intel (INTC +1.8%) roundup: 1) Intel follows up on its first Haswell launches by unveiling over a dozen CPUs aimed at notebooks and tablets/convertibles. Intel promises an 11% ultrabook performance boost relative to Ivy Bridge, and 7+ days of standby. Though Intel wants $600 ultrabooks in 2013, near-term pricing is a concern. 2) Intel claims 15 convertible designs are in the pipeline, and that there should be 50 by year's end. Plenty of designs are being shown off at Computex. 3) Intel's VC arm is creating a $100M fund to invest in "perceptual computing" tech such as voice/gesture control and emotion sensing. 4) Intel shows off a demo phone containing its Merrifield Atom CPU. The 22nm chip will ship early next year, and compete against Qualcomm (QCOM) and Nvidia's (NVDA) high-end offerings. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, May 31, 6:26 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) held a 97% share of the 4G LTE baseband chip market in Q1, estimates Strategy Analytics. Chalk that up to heavy R&D spend and a big head-start in developing chips with support for both multi-mode (2G/3G/4G) operation and a wide variety of frequency bands. That number is likely to fall going forward as offerings from Nvidia, Broadcom, and Intel arrive, but Qualcomm isn't standing still either. SA also estimates Qualcomm, aided by its Snapdragon baseband/app processor line, had a 59% share of the broader baseband market, up from 52% in 2012. That dwarfs #2 Intel's (INTC) 12% share and #3 MediaTek's 10%. ST-Ericsson and Spreadtrum (SPRD) rounded out the top-5. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 30, 7:02 PM Galaxy S4 sales will top 20M in Q2 and 80M by year's end, estimates RBC, citing checks indicating strong U.S. demand. If Samsung (SSNLF.PK) pulls that off, it would be on its way to hitting its target of 100M lifetime sales. RBC also expects industry smartphone sales to rise 27% this year to 870M, and 20% in 2014 to 1B+. Meanwhile, a Russian site reports Samsung's June 20 London event will reveal the Galaxy S4 Zoom, a 4.3" phone sporting a 16MP camera with a 10x optical zoom, and the Galaxy S4 Active, a water/dust-proof S4 variant sporting a Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon 600 CPU. Samsung's just-launched S4 Mini uses a Snapdragon 400. Other S4 suppliers: PANL, SYNA, ATML, RFMD, BRCM, ANAD, SWKS, TQNT. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 22, 11:07 AM AIG remains at the top Goldman's list of hedge fund hotels (the 50 stocks appearing most frequently among hedge fund top 10 holdings). Google (GOOG) retains its #2 position. Apple (APPL) - in the top spot for 3 years until February - remains at #3. Goldman notes the basket has outperformed the S&P a bit this year and the top 20 has done better by more than 1000 basis points. We smell an ETF offering. The rest of the top 20: C, GM, PCLN, VMED, NWSA, MSFT, HTZ, JPM, APC, PFE, QCOM, CHTR, HES, CBS, EBAY, DAL, EQIX. 4 Comments
- Friday, May 17, 11:27 AM Galaxy S4 sales will top 10M next week (less than a month after launching), says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun. The Galaxy S III took 50 days to crack 10M. Samsung thinks S4 sales could eventually reach 100M, or twice the 50M the S III has seen over its lifetime. Suppliers with decent exposure: RFMD, ANAD, PANL, QCOM, BRCM, SYNA. 3 Comments [Tech]

$QCOM looks oversold, RSI 25, trading below the declining 10 and 55 SMA, near the lower Bollinger Band, a bounce up should follow soon. - View all 0 replies

$QCOM can be a good buy at the moment, the 10 SMA is still above the 55 SMA. A few green sessions and $67-70+ is in sight. - View all 0 replies

$QCOM on its way to 52-week high. I hope you all bought in when I was screaming "BUY" http://seekingalpha.com/a/udsp - View all 10 replies

Dhierin Bechai: Bought some today, I think $QCOM can get higher than its 52-week high. SMAs are about to cross, after $69 bulls can make QCOM skyrocket. -

Ashraf Eassa: bs10305 - maybe, but market is still growing huge + most of QCOM's profit comes from 3G/4G patent licensing, not chips.

Matt-Man: Did you sell part of Intel? I think if Haswell turns out to be like expected it may give some boost still -
Ashraf Eassa: Matt-Man: Nope. I don't plan to sell $INTC anytime over the next several years, barring a terrible CEO pick.
