- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 12:29 PM Evercore's Mark McKechnie starts Qualcomm (QCOM +0.2%) and InvenSense (INVN +4.5%) at Overweight. McKechnie sees Qualcomm benefiting from rising sales of 3G/4G notebooks and tablets, and predicts its chip margins, hurt by 28nm yield issues and high R&D spending, will eventually rebound. As for InvenSense, he considers its MEMS motion sensor chips differentiated from rival solutions, and forecasts huge unit growth. Research In Motion and Nokia have been started at Equal weight. - Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 5:23 PM Stephen Mandel's Lone Pine Capital takes up new positions: Cooper Cos. (COO), Walt Disney (DIS), eBay (EBAY), Google (GOOG), HCA Holdings (HCA), Kohls (KSS), Liberty Global (LBTYA), Monsanto (MON), News Corp, (NWSA), Qualcomm (QCOM). Comment! - Friday, August 10, 2012, 5:30 PM It's not just TSMC's (TSM) 28nm manufacturing capacity that's in short supply now: Digitimes reports capacity for prior-gen 40nm parts has also become tight, thanks to orders from Taiwan's MediaTek for chips used in Chinese smartphones. The report both drives home the impact Chinese smartphone sales are having on mobile chip demand, and suggests MediaTek is taking share from rival Spreadtrum (SPRD -11.7%), which just reported disappointing 3G chip sales. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, August 9, 2012, 6:13 PM More on Spreadtrum's Q2: Q3 guidance is for revenue of $178M-$186M, compared with a $184.8M consensus. That appears to be disappointing investors, and is overshadowing the Q2 beat. Also, Q2 sales of 3G baseband and RF chips fell 28% Q/Q (albeit while rising 23% Y/Y). Given how Chinese 3G phone sales are taking off, that could be sparking fears of share loss to MediaTek and/or QCOM. Sales of 2G/2.5G chips rose 32% Q/Q, but ASPs fell 9.5%. SPRD -10.6% AH. - Thursday, August 9, 2012, 10:14 AM Stifel has launched coverage on Apple (AAPL +0.5%) with a Buy and $825 PT. Separately, Topeka's Brian White, whose "Apple Monitor" accurately predicted a soft June quarter, claims the monitor delivered the "best July on record," with sales of the Apple suppliers it tracks rising 14% M/M (the historical average is 8.5%). Cirrus Logic's guidance has already fueled hopes of strong fall sales for Apple and its suppliers. 11 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 4:32 PM AMD (AMD +9.5%) rallied in afternoon trading, apparently on M&A speculation. Evercore's Patrick Wang says Qualcomm (QCOM) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) have been mentioned as potential buyers. But would these companies, both of whom develop ARM-based processors, be that interested in an x86 processor developer that's heavily exposed to a weak PC market, and is perpetually at a resource disadvantage relative to Intel (INTC)? 15.9% of AMD's float was shorted as of July 13. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 10:41 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) has hired Intel vet Anand Chandrasekhr to be its chief marketing officer. Until his resignation last year, Chandrasekhr was responsible for Intel's Atom CPU line. Before that, he was Intel's head of global sales and marketing. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 8:12 AM Chip makers such as Qualcomm (QCOM), Intel (INTC) and Taiwan's MediaTek are fighting it out in the emerging battlefield of low-end smartphones that cost less than $200, attracted by high volumes and fast growth. Intel and Qualcom have teamed up with Lenovo, with the latter two last week introducing the first devices that use dual-core chips from Qualcomm which address the cheaper end of the market. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Saturday, August 4, 2012, 5:11 PM China made up 27% of Q2 smartphone sales (the slowing U.S. was at 16%), says Canalys, with its 199% Y/Y growth far outpacing the 24% seen elsewhere. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and Apple (AAPL) are doing well in China, though the iPhone's high price makes it dependent on wealthier (and perhaps slower-growing) coastal provinces. But NOK and others are having trouble competing with local vendors. Chipmakers SPRD, MRVL, and QCOM have decent Chinese exposure. (Q1 data) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 12:55 PM NTT DoCoMo (DCM), Fujitsu, and NEC have formed a JV (majority-owned by Fujisu) that will develop 3G/4G baseband chips. The JV, which aims to reduce the companies' dependence on baseband leader Qualcomm (QCOM), comes 4 months after a partnership that also featured Samsung and Panasonic unraveled. Qualcomm and its giant R&D budget have weathered a few similar challenges in the past. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 3:58 PM UMC says it's offering a 10% stake in the company through a private placement, with the goal of obtaining "strategic partners." There has been speculation that cash-rich Qualcomm (QCOM), which recently struck a foundry deal with UMC (among others) on account of TSMC's (TSM) 28nm supply issues, will make an investment. UMC, which has been struggling to keep pace with TSMC, recently broke ground on an $8B fab project. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 2:34 PM What's the best offense in this kind of market? A cyclical defense, says Baker Avenue's Doug Couden. Rather than sticking to the traditional favorites like consumer staples or utilities, which in the present environment are exposed to currency risk and higher input costs, he recommends looking at technology and oil service sector names where profit streams are more defensible. His picks: Ebay (EBAY +0.9%), Qualcomm (QCOM -0.4%), Schlumberger (SLB -0.7%) and Haliburton (HAL -0.6%). ( Video ) 1 Comment [U.S. Economy, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 1:31 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is taking Windows Phone 8 (MSFT) seriously: the company has disclosed in court documents it's planning to launch two WP8 models in Q4. One will feature a 4.65" display, and both (like the U.S. version of the Galaxy S III) will run on Qualcomm's (QCOM) powerful MSM8960 processor. It looks as if Nokia (NOK), reportedly launching two WP8 models of its in the coming months, will have its work cut out for it. (also) 56 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 9:12 AM The next iPhone (AAPL) will be delayed due to Qualcomm's (QCOM) 28nm baseband chip shortage, claims China's First Financial Daily. Qualcomm foundry TSMC (TSM) has been having 28nm supply issues, something that has led Qualcomm to strike deals with TSMC's rivals. But Apple and Qualcomm remain up slightly premarket (albeit less than the Nasdaq), which suggests some have doubts about this rumor. Qualcomm has promised the shortage would disappear by year's end. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 1:20 PM Beaten-down chip stocks are rallying (SOXX +2.9%) thanks to pleasing reports from Broadcom, STMicroelectronics, Altera, and others. Interestingly, many Apple (AAPL -4%) suppliers, off initially on the FQ3 miss, are also gaining - even Cirrus Logic (CRUS +3.5%), which has 60%+ exposure. Two possible implications: the Street thinks Samsung will make up for any iShortfall, and/or it's less bothered by Apple's iPhone shipments per se than its margin and ASP declines. (more on AAPL) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 6:37 PM Microsoft (MSFT) might grant just 4 PC OEMs the right to launch Windows RT tablets this fall before allowing more entrants in January, claims Taiwan's Economic Times. Lenovo and Asus will partner with Nvidia (NVDA) to ship tablets, Toshiba with Texas Instruments (TXN), and Samsung with Qualcomm (QCOM). H-P was also going to ship a Qualcomm system, but it had a change of heart. Dell (DELL) reportedly could be working with Qualcomm to fill the gap, but the company has no comment. 3 Comments [Tech]
