- Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 12:23 PM Apple (AAPL), unsurprisingly, has the largest overseas cash balance of any tech company: Moody's believes it rose 15% in the March quarter to $74B. Joining Apple in the top 5 are Microsoft (MSFT - $50B), Cisco (CSCO - $42.3B), Oracle (ORCL - $25.1B), and Qualcomm (QCOM - $16.5B). Altogether, tech companies account for roughly half of an estimated $457B in overseas cash held by U.S. firms. Efforts to obtain a "tax holiday" on the repatriation of overseas cash have stalled. 37 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 6:44 PM Chinese smartphone shipments rose 164% Y/Y in Q1 to 33.1M, estimates Gartner. Those figures contrast sharply with the decelerating growth seen in the U.S. and Europe. The iPhone (AAPL) is believed to have made up 17.3% of shipments, and Android (GOOG) devices 69.5%. Separately, the Chinese government estimates 107M of the 190M phones shipped domestically in Q1 were 3G models - that's a positive for baseband chipmakers QCOM and MRVL. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 1:52 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) reportedly plans to release a Windows RT tablet in October that features a Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon CPU. Samsung's efforts should provide a useful shot in the arm for Qualcomm's Windows ambitions - H-P, perhaps upset over the release of Microsoft Surface (MSFT), recently said it would hold off on releasing a Windows RT tablet, after having previously suggested it would release a model featuring a Snapdragon. (previous) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 10:31 AM For whatever it's worth, Digitimes claims H-P (HPQ) will indeed launch a Windows RT (MSFT) tablet in Q4, in spite of company statements suggesting otherwise. It's added Dell (DELL) will also launch an RT tablet in Q4 (as expected), and that the PC vendors will use processors from Texas Instruments (TXN) and Qualcomm (QCOM). Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 9:35 AM Qualcomm (QCOM): Declares $0.25/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Dividend yield 1.8%. For shareholders of record Sep 07; payable Sep 26; ex-div date Sep 05. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 12:20 PM Mobile phone sales will come in well below normal seasonality in Q2 and Q3, predicts Raymond James' Tavis McCourt. Nonetheless, McCourt, who's far from alone in expressing such a view, expects sales to rebound sharply in Q4 with the help of new phone launches. As a result, he thinks Q2 could represent a bottom for chipmakers such as Qualcomm (QCOM), Skyworks (SWKS), and RF Micro (RFMD), whose shares have already been hit by reports of order cuts. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 4:48 PM Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) has stopped subsidizing its 4G tablets. This won't do anything to boost interest in its costly shared data plans, or to increase the low share of 3G/4G tablets within the overall tablet market. The latter is a problem for chipmakers such as Qualcomm (QCOM), Skyworks (SWKS), and TriQuint (TQNT), who often see their components go into 3G/4G tablets, but rarely Wi-Fi-only models. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, July 2, 2012, 6:20 PM Sprint (S), Telecom Italia (TI), and others have joined the ranks of carriers supporting Mozilla's Firefox OS (formerly called Boot 2 Gecko) Telefonica (TEF) and Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY.PK) are already on board, and China's ZTE and TCL say they'll release Firefox phones running on Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon processors in Q1 2013. SA's Dana Blankenhorn thinks the carriers are motivated by the possibility of having an open-source OS they can fully control. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, July 2, 2012, 1:48 PM Nvidia (NVDA) has a lead on Qualcomm (QCOM) and Texas Instruments (TXN) in fielding ARM processors ready for Windows RT (MSFT) hardware, thinks prominent chip industry analyst Patrick Moorhead. Moorhead argues Nvidia, whose Tegra processors will power the Windows RT version of Microsoft Surface, is ahead partly due to its experience (courtesy of its GPU business) working with Windows drivers. H-P just postponed plans to sell a Windows RT system featuring a Qualcomm chip. 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, June 29, 2012, 2:51 PM In an interview, Qualcomm (QCOM) exec Rob Chandhok elaborates on his company's efforts to create a software ecosystem around its Snapdragon processors. Among other things, he notes Qualcomm wants to offer Snapdragon developer tools that work across multiple platforms (Android, Windows Phone, Windows RT) and devices (smartphones, tablets, TVs). Widespread developer support (not easy to obtain) could provide a big competitive edge for Qualcomm relative to its many rivals. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 4:46 PM Research In Motion (RIMM) has resumed trading following its giant FQ1 miss and layoff announcement. Shares are down 15.9% AH. The company's market cap is now barely above $4B. Mobile component suppliers such as Skyworks (SWKS), Broadcom (BRCM), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Marvell (MRVL) are off slightly AH. 11 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 9:14 AM More on Qualcomm's restructuring: The move echoes an aborted attempt a decade ago to spin off Qualcomm's chip unit from its licensing unit. The goal then, as now, was to protect Qualcomm's massive royalty streams from being diluted by cross-licensing deals needed to obtain chip IP. Separately, CEO Paul Jacobs says Qualcomm won't rule out building its own chip plants in the future or "writing big checks" to guarantee capacity, as it wrestles with TSMC's (TSM) supply problems. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 8:42 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) announces a restructure in which it will form a new unit called Qualcomm Technologies (QTI), which will run the group's R&D ops, and its product and services businesses, including its semiconductor arm. The parent will run the licensing division and corporate functions, and manage most of the firm's patent portfolio. (PR) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 5:29 PM Cantor's Dale Pfau starts coverage on Qualcomm (QCOM) and Broadcom (BRCM) at Buy. Pfau thinks Qualcomm can add to its 45% share of the smartphone baseband chip market given the huge design win share of its Snapdragon processors, and is also positive on the continuing migration to 3G networks in emerging markets. Meanwhile, Broadcom's mobile business (baseband and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips) is expected to post a 25% CAGR. (QCOM conference) 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 4:14 PM At Qualcomm's (QCOM) Uplinq conference, the mobile chip giant introduced several tools aimed at creating a software ecosystem around its Snapdragon app/baseband processors. Among them: an Android development kit (SDK) focused on multimedia and location features; an augmented reality platform called Vuforia; and Gimbal, an SDK for adding context awareness to apps. Also, CEO Paul Jacobs promised Snapdragon chips would power some of the first Windows RT devices. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 11:11 AM Taiwan's MediaTek is throwing its hat into the crowded mobile processor market, courtesy of a dual-core chip it says is cheap enough to be used in sub-$200 (unsubsidized) Android phones. The solution will compete with processors from QCOM, NVDA, TXN, INTC, and others. MediaTek, which is also bolstering its mobile chip presence by acquiring Taiwanese peer MStar, has strong relationships with many Chinese OEMs. Comment! [Tech]
