- Wednesday, April 17, 9:11 AM Apple (AAPL) -1.2% after Cirrus Logic (CRUS), which gets over half of its revenue from the company, issues a revenue warning for the March and June quarters (FQ4 and FQ1). Though Cirrus' FQ4 revenue forecast of $206.9M is only a little below a $210.2M consensus, its FQ1 forecast of $150M-$170M is well below a $195.2M consensus. The audio codec chipmaker also says it will take a $23.3M write-down, $20.7M of which is due to "a decreased forecast for a high volume product" as a customer (quite possibly Apple) migrates to a new component (could be a sign of a new iPhone). SWKS -2.2%. QCOM -0.9%. 8 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 11, 2:11 PM Nvidia (NVDA -1.6%) announces: 1) It will return $1B to shareholders this fiscal year. $200M is expected to come from dividends, and the rest from buybacks ($100M this quarter). The chipmaker repurchased $100M worth of shares in the January quarter (last year's FQ4). 2) It expects Tegra sales to be flat this year, even as smartphone/tablet sales keep growing. The fact Qualcomm (QCOM) has been taking share while OEMs wait for the Tegra 4 app processor (volume shipments by end of July quarter) and 4i baseband/app processor (devices in Q1 '14) is undoubtedly a factor. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 6:32 PM The sell-side loves Qualcomm (QCOM) these days. The latest proof comes from Sterne Agee, which declares the chipmaker's Snapdragon 600 line to have gained share at multiple OEMs relative to last year's MSM8960 processor, which wasn't exactly a slouch. Sterne also notes reports Qualcomm's chips could go into 70% of Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV units, a major improvement from its S III share, and that Galaxy S IV pre-orders are around 10M. Canaccord touted Qualcomm's strong 4G baseband position yesterday, and Raymond James last week. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 12:53 PM U.S. companies paid out an additional $14.5B in dividends on common stock in Q1 as more companies increased their payouts, S&P Dow Jones Indices reports, even as payout rates remain at a historically low 36%. The quarter saw 944 dividend increases, a 39.4% gain Y/Y. By percentage, some of the biggest dividend hikes came from F, WYNN, QCOM, HAL and HD. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, April 9, 9:19 AM Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) declares $0.35/share quarterly dividend, 40% increase from prior dividend of $0.25. Forward yield 2.13%. For shareholders of record June 05. Payable Juen 26. Ex-div date June 03. (PR) 2 Comments [Dividends]
- Wednesday, April 3, 6:52 PM Qualcomm's (QCOM) reference designs could be doing wonders for its Chinese chip share: an exec says 40+ OEMs have commercialized 170+ devices (typically low-end smartphones) based on Qualcomm reference designs, and that over 90% of the OEMs are from China. Spreadtrum (SPRD) and MediaTek, who have their own reference design programs, are Qualcomm's main rivals here. Also: Susquehanna believes Galaxy S IV units sporting Snapdragon 600 processors (such as the U.S. version) will deliver 2x as much chip revenue to Qualcomm as iPhone units, to go with higher royalties. (previous) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 3, 8:10 AM Google (GOOG) continues to move aggressively into the low-priced tablet market, aiming to launch a new version of its Nexus 7 tablet around July for maybe as low as $149, reports Reuters. A blow to Nvidia (NVDA), the tablet will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm's (QCOM) Snapdragon processor. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 2, 1:39 PM Baidu's (BIDU +1.8%) Chinese search share stood at 70.5% as of March 20, down from 71.5% at the end of 2012, estimates T.H. Capital. Qihoo (QIHU -1.4%), by contrast, is believed to have grown its share to 13.5% from 10.4% over this time. Nonetheless, the firm thinks Baidu's page views and unique visitors respectively grew 0.9% and 0.6% in Q1, which it thinks could bode well for Q1 revenue. Separately, Sina Tech reports Baidu is working with Qualcomm (QCOM) on a Google Glass-like product called Baidu Eye. (Citi report) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 2, 12:04 PM More on Raymond James' upgrade of Qualcomm (QCOM +0.3%): Analyst Tavis McCourt thinks concerns about 4G baseband chip competition (from Broadcom, Nvidia, etc.) are overblown. Whereas rivals will be offering basebands built on 28nm processes in 2014, Qualcomm will have moved to 20nm, McCourt argues. His remarks come as a Taiwanese paper reports TSMC (TSM) is ahead of schedule in installing 20nm gear, and hopes to start volume production in Q3. Nvidia's Logan app processor (due in 2014) will use a 20nm process, but its Tegra 4i baseband/app processor is at 28nm. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 2, 9:26 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) +1.3% on an upgrade to Strong Buy from Outperform from Raymond James. The firm's PT has been raised to $83 from $80. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 4:31 PM A U.S. district court in Florida has denied a motion from Qualcomm (QCOM +0.4%) to dismiss an infringement suit levied by ParkerVision (PRKR +4.6%). The motion relates to an amended indirect infringement complaint filed by ParkerVision last September; a motion by Qualcomm to dismiss ParkerVision's original complaint was granted in August. ParkerVision investors like the news, which comes shortly after the chipmaker boasted of the quality of its patent portfolio in a PR. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 2:52 PM Broadcom's (BRCM +0.6%) 4G LTE baseband modem puts the chipmaker "in a position to emerge as a leading alternative supplier of LTE modems in 2014 to the high- to mid- tier smartphone segment," proclaims BMO's Ambrish Srivastava. Last month, RBC argued the chip, which won't ship until 2014, could allow Broadcom to displace market leader Qualcomm (QCOM) as Apple's basbeand supplier. Broadcom, which has invested a fortune in baseband R&D (with mixed results), has been trumpeting the chip's size and power draw. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 22, 5:48 PM Windows RT (MSFT) has "a very bright future," insists Microsoft exec Michael Angiulo, addressing concerns about the ARM-powered (ARMH) OS' viability in the wake of weak sales and industry criticism. Angiulo suggests the performance of future ARM chips will give RT a boost, and actually argues RT's inability to support legacy Windows apps is good for the user experience. The Verge's Aaron Souppouris isn't sold, not after seeing a Windows 8 Pro system running an Intel (INTC) Clover Trail Atom CPU easily outperform RT systems. (Intel Bay Trail) 39 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 22, 4:16 PM More on Qualcomm: 1) Sharp says it will receive the second part of a $120M investment from Qualcomm by June 28; the payment had been delayed after Sharp failed to hit a deadline for developing specs for new displays based on its low-power IGZO tech. 2) Like its U.S. counterpart, the U.K. version of Samsung's Galaxy S IV will use a Qualcomm processor (the Snapdragon 600). This wasn't the case for the S III, and, along with a prior report about Korean S IV models using Qualcomm chips, demonstrates how Qualcomm's 4G baseband tech lead is yielding share gains. Comment! Matt-Man: Did you sell part of Intel? I think if Haswell turns out to be like expected it may give some boost still -
Ashraf Eassa: Matt-Man: Nope. I don't plan to sell $INTC anytime over the next several years, barring a terrible CEO pick.

Peter Karahalios: I disagree. QCOM dominates the high-end of the growing smartphone market. INTC is stuck with PC's for now -
Ashraf Eassa: Pjkaras...look at the financials, though. PCs alone are more profitable than mobile, let alone Intel's server division.
