- Tuesday, February 12, 7:02 PM Broadcom's (BRCM +1.3%) 4G baseband modem could allow it to displace Qualcomm (QCOM -1.9%) as Apple's baseband supplier, thinks RBC's Doug Freedman. He argues the relatively small/low-power chip's support for the LTE-Advanced standard and China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G network work in its favor, and believes Apple is currently sampling the product. Two caveats: Apple generally isn't quick to change suppliers, and (as is its custom) Qualcomm will probably show off new baseband parts this month at the Mobile World Congress. (Broadcom PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 12, 9:18 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) -1.4% thanks to a downgrade to Neutral from JPMorgan, which foresees "rapidly slowing smartphone adoption" in 2014. The firm also sees 3G device ASPs falling this year - Qualcomm's device royalties are based on a % of OEM selling prices. The downgrade follows solid post-earnings gains. Separately, Broadcom (BRCM) says its first 4G baseband chip will be smaller than rival chips, but (like Intel's) won't ship in volume until 2014 - Qualcomm dominates this market, though some competition exists. (2013 smartphone estimates) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 6, 2:01 PM Google's (GOOG) next-gen Nexus 7 tablet (expected in Q2) will feature Qualcomm's (QCOM) APQ8064 app processor rather than an Nvidia (NVDA) part, according to Pac Crest's checks. The current Nexus 7 uses Nvidia's Tegra 3 chip, and Pac Crest sees Google's move - reportedly motivated by pricing and a wish to standardize on a single baseband and app processor supplier - hurting Tegra sales by $200M-$250M through Q1 '14. The APQ8064 has turned in huge benchmark numbers, though Nvidia's new Tegra 4 is likely competitive. (Nexus 7 rumors) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 6, 1:03 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) anticipated Galaxy S IV will be announced on March 15, SamMobile reports - the site has been an accurate source of Samsung rumors in the past. The device will reportedly go on sale in Europe and Asia in April, and hit North America in May or June. Rumored specs include a 5" 1080p OLED display, Exynos 5 Octa processor (for some models, at least), and 13MP camera. Possible/likely suppliers (I, II) include BRCM, QCOM, PANL, SWKS, ADNC, and MXIM. 42 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 5, 4:01 PM A Broadcom (BRCM +0.5%) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip (perhaps a 5G Wi-Fi part) has been designed into Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S IV, according to Evercore's checks. The firm also sees evidence of "a greater mix" of Qualcomm (QCOM +2%) Snapdragon processors being used for the S IV than the S III, which relies on both a Snapdragon and a Samsung Exynos processor (depending on the model). Broadcom remains the combo chip market's undisputed leader, but recent acquisitions by Samsung could lower its dependence on the chipmaker. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 5, 2:39 PM Some Microsoft (MSFT +0.5%) news: 1) Ted Kummert, head of Microsoft's growing Data Platform unit (includes SQL Server and Microsoft's business intelligence/analytics software), is leaving to become a VC. 2) Huawei is teaming with Microsoft to offer a cheap Qualcomm-powered (QCOM) Windows Phone meant for Africa. Offering cheaper Windows Phones is critical to challenging Android's emerging markets dominance - Nokia's (NOK) Lumia 510, perhaps the cheapest WP model currently available, goes for ~$200 unsubsidized. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 31, 12:03 PM Qualcomm's (QCOM +4.6%) strong FQ1 (I, II) indicates the company is "decoupled from Apple" and capable of growing regardless of smartphone share trends, writes Goldman. Longbow says something similar about Skyworks (SWKS +13.5%) following its FQ1 beat, arguing Samsung exposure (17% of sales) is helping offset Apple exposure (25%). The firm also thinks Skyworks is maintaining power amplifier share, and that sales of other RF chips are offsetting ASP and chip-integration pressures. TQNT +3.3%. AVGO +1.9%. ANAD +1.7%. VNR -5%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Wednesday, January 30, 5:42 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) discloses on its FQ1 call CFO William Keitel is retiring, effecting March 11. He's being replaced by Applied Materials (AMAT) CFO George Davis. AMAT says it's looking for a successor. QCOM +6.7% AH thanks to an FQ1 beat fueled by stronger-than-expected baseband chip and (royalty-bearing) 3G/4G device sales, and solid FQ2/FY13 guidance. In its slide deck (.pdf), Qualcomm notes 2012 device sales beat prior guidance in all regions except North America. Cash/equivalents stand at $28.4B ($18.3B offshore). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 4:35 PM More on Qualcomm: Expects FQ2 revenue of $5.8B-$6.3B and EPS of $1.10-$1.18 vs. consensus of $5.88B and $1.10. Expects FY13 revenue of $23.4B-$24.4B and EPS of $4.25-$4.45 vs. consensus of $23.6B and $4.32. 182M baseband chips shipped in FQ1, +17% Y/Y. Expects 163M-173M shipments in FQ2 (+7%-14%), better than feared. $250M in buybacks. Royalty-bearing device sales rose +29% Y/Y in Sep. quarter with ASP of $224-$230 (up Y/Y). 2013 device guidance unchanged at 1B-1.07B, FY13 ASP forecast still at $214-$226. QCOM +6.1% AH. - Wednesday, January 30, 4:08 PM Qualcomm (QCOM): FQ1 EPS of $1.26 beats by $0.14. Revenue of $6B (+28% Y/Y) beats by $100M. Raises Q2 and FY13 guidance. Shares +4.7% AH. (PR). 4 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, January 30, 12:22 PM "The Z10 and BB10 represent a radical reinvention of the BlackBerry," says Walt Mossberg in a somewhat favorable review: he likes BB10's gesture support and keyboard, but criticizes its browser and dearth of cloud services. The Verge's Joshua Topolsky gives the Z10 a score of 7/10, praising its design and camera while criticizing its battery life and app ecosystem, as well as BlackBerry Hub. Engadget's Tim Stevens strikes a similar tone. As rumored, the Z10 runs on Qualcomm's (QCOM) popular MSM8960 processor. RIMM -7.4%. (more) 30 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 30, 9:34 AM Cowen is out with a bullish note on Qualcomm (QCOM) ahead of today's FQ1 report: the firm expects conservative guidance to be issued, but also foresees additional (baseband) chip share gains. With Qualcomm recording an estimated $34 in chip sales per iPhone 5 unit (per iSuppli), Apple's light guidance and reported order cuts are bound to take a toll on FQ2 guidance. But Qualcomm is also benefiting from ramping 4G baseband sales and strong uptake for its Snapdragon processors among Android OEMs. Comment! [Tech]

- Friday, January 25, 1:34 PM Microsoft (MSFT) is reportedly working with Qualcomm (QCOM) and others to create a Windows Phone reference design for Chinese OEMs targeting emerging markets. Creating cheaper WP hardware is critical to taking on Android in China and other cost-sensitive markets - Nokia (NOK) and Microsoft have promised they'll offer $100 (unsubsidized) WP models, but have a ways to go. Separately, Verizon has begun selling the Samsung Ativ Odyssey for a subsidized $50, and will reportedly sell a Lumia 920 variant once AT&T exclusivity ends. 6 Comments [Tech]

QCOM earnings good for AAPL. They can't say, but we know. ;-) AAPL locks up capacity in advance; they got a lot - other carriers lost out! - View all 2 replies
