- Wednesday, March 6, 4:41 AM Sharp's (SHCAY.PK) future looks a little more secure after confirming that Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has agreed to invest ¥10.3B ($110M) in the struggling Japanese company in return for a 3% stake. Sharp will also provide large TV panels to the Korean firm and increase the shipments of smaller LCDs. Samsung's investment adds to a $120M injection from Qualcomm (QCOM) in December. Sharp's shares surged 14.05% in Tokyo on reports of the latest deal. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 9:20 AM Atmel (ATML) tries to tap a growth market by acquiring Ozmo, a developer of ultra-low-power Wi-Fi chips for the proverbial "Internet of things." Ozmo doesn't directly compete with Wi-Fi leaders such as Broadcom, Intel, and Qualcomm, but instead focuses on embedded devices such as speakers, thermostats, and remote controls, where low power consumption and small size are at a premium. Atmel notes Ozmo is a leader in Wi-Fi Direct solutions, which are expected to show a 100% CAGR through 2015. 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:39 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) has bought the assets of EPOS, a developer of ultrasound tech that can be used in pen, stylus, and gesture recognition solutions. Qualcomm plans to integrate EPOS' tech with its widely-used Snapdragon processors, possibly giving them another software-based way of standing out in a competitive landscape. Qualcomm is already trying to create a developer ecosystem around the Snapdragon line. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 4:44 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) announces its purchase of base station processor developer DesignArt Networks. Terms aren't disclosed, but a report this week put the deal's price at $120M-$140M. Qualcomm touts DesignArt's ability to address the growing market for small cell base stations, which are particularly useful in public settings where a huge amount of mobile data traffic is being generated. (more on QCOM) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 9:30 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) is set to acquire Israeli chipmaker DesignArt Networks for $120M-$140M, Globes reports. DesignArt develops processors for 3G/4G base stations and mobile backhaul gear, and is a leader in the growing market for small base station chips. The purchase should help Qualcomm, which already has a sizable base station processor business, compete with rivals such as Cavium (CAVM), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Broadcom's (BRCM) NetLogic division. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 4:32 PM AMD (AMD +9.5%) rallied in afternoon trading, apparently on M&A speculation. Evercore's Patrick Wang says Qualcomm (QCOM) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) have been mentioned as potential buyers. But would these companies, both of whom develop ARM-based processors, be that interested in an x86 processor developer that's heavily exposed to a weak PC market, and is perpetually at a resource disadvantage relative to Intel (INTC)? 15.9% of AMD's float was shorted as of July 13. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 8:04 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) says it will buy Summit Microelectronics for an undisclosed amount. The acquired company is a specialist in producing the power management chips that are used in mobile devices. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, December 23, 2011, 1:32 AM AT&T (T) announced late yesterday it had won regulatory approval for the $1.9B purchase of wireless spectrum from Qualcomm (QCOM). The companies expect to close the transaction "in the coming days," ahead of guidance for the end of Q1 2012. 1 Comment [M&A, Tech]
- Friday, December 2, 2011, 8:02 AM Without announcing the deal, Qualcomm (QCOM) recently acquired Pixtronix, a developer of low-power mobile device displays that rely on MEMS technology. Sources put the deal's price tag in the $175M-$200M range. Qualcomm might try to use Pixtronix's technology to bolster its Mirasol display line, which takes a different approach to using MEMS. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 8:17 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) makes an acquisition that's off the beaten path, buying the technology and assets of HaloIPT, a British developer of wireless charging technology for electric cars. In tandem with the deal, Qualcomm has agreed to an R&D partnership with the University of Auckland for developing wireless vehicle charging technology. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, November 4, 2011, 12:12 PM AT&T (T -1.3%) pushes back expected closing dates for its proposed purchases of T-Mobile USA (DTEGY.PK) and a block of Qualcomm (QCOM -0.2%) spectrum by as much as three months each. AT&T now says it expects to close the $39B T-Mobile takeover by the end of next year's first half, and the spectrum purchase should be closed by the end of Q1 2012. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, September 13, 2011, 9:38 AM Cavium (CAVM) shares rose sharply yesterday following BRCM's acquisition of rival NETL. However, Bloomberg estimates that if Cavium was acquired at a similar price/sales ratio, shares would rise an additional 39%. William Blair thinks INTC, MRVL, or QCOM could show interest in Cavium at a price of $50-$60/share. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, M&A]
- Friday, September 9, 2011, 4:10 PM Intel (INTC), Ericsson (ERIC), and HTC (HTCCF.PK) are the latest companies said to be weighing offers for 3G/4G patent holder InterDigital (IDCC -4.5%), while Google (GOOG) is viewed as losing interest now that it has MMI. Other names reported at some point to be considering offers include AAPL, QCOM, and NOK. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, September 2, 2011, 4:27 PM Microsemi (MSCC) may abandon its hostile bid for Zarlink Semiconductor (ZLKKF.PK), now that Zarlink shares are trading 9% above Microsemi's offer price of C$3.35. Zarlink claims to be in talks with 15 interested parties about a buyout; analysts name INTC, TXN, and QCOM as potential suitors, given Zarlink's wireless medical chip technology. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, August 22, 2011, 2:52 PM InterDigital (IDCC +1.9%) shot higher around 12:45, apparently on a new rumor about Qualcomm (QCOM) weighing an offer. Tiernan Ray is skeptical Qualcomm would be interested, though if InterDigital's patents allow Qualcomm to up its 4G royalty rate from 3.25% to the 5-6% rate it often charges for 3G devices, an offer could be worth it. (previously) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 17, 2011, 1:54 PM Quck take on InterDigital: Nokia seems an unlikely suitor; it already has a strong patent portfolio, and acquiring InterDigital would consume much of its cash position. But Qualcomm is an intriguing candidate; it has plenty of cash, and could use InterDigital's 4G patents to boost its royalty rate on 4G phones, which is below its rate on 3G phones. Comment! Dhierin Bechai: Bought some today, I think $QCOM can get higher than its 52-week high. SMAs are about to cross, after $69 bulls can make QCOM skyrocket. -

Ashraf Eassa: bs10305 - maybe, but market is still growing huge + most of QCOM's profit comes from 3G/4G patent licensing, not chips.

Entered in on $QCOM at $61.95. Tempted to take profits already but I think this stock is still undervalued and will climb higher this week. - View all 0 replies

Sam Liu: weak macro-indicators are flattening QCOM, though AAPL is drifting upwards. -
wheelz23: QCOM's drop is the typical post earnings response in this instance...if the market remains steady, it should rebound a bit soon

Matt-Man: Did you sell part of Intel? I think if Haswell turns out to be like expected it may give some boost still -
Ashraf Eassa: Matt-Man: Nope. I don't plan to sell $INTC anytime over the next several years, barring a terrible CEO pick.
