Nymex crude settled -2.6% at $91.03 after today's inventory report revealed crude stockpiles climbed to 6.696M barrels, a record high dating back to 1982 when the EIA began tracking the data. E&P equities took a beating, from higher-beta names such as QEP Resources (QEP -6.1%) to giants such as Exxon (XOM -1.6%) and Chevron (CVX -1.4%). (ETFs: USO, UCO, OIL, BNO)

Barclays analysts downplay the impact of the safety notice on offshore drillers ordering inspection of subsea equipment on some Gulf of Mexico drilling rigs for faulty bolts. "While this event poses additional downtime risk for these drillers, we believe the downtime would be limited and can be often mitigated through the course of normal operations," the firm says.

Shares of oil and gas drillers slide to session lows following a Bloomberg report that drilling regulators had directed offshore operators to halt work on some oil and gas wells in the Gulf of Mexico after discovering faulty bolts on equipment used to prevent blowouts. Replacing all bolts on blowout preventers could cost millions, Rowan (RDC) CEO Matt Ralls says.

Stephens analyst William Butler remains cool on natural gas but is bullish on the energy sector, seeing upside for various small and large companies. On his Best Ideas list: Sanchez Energy (SN), which expects to grow to 6.6K boe/day next year - 330% growth, with 85% of it in oil; SN also boasts 10 years of drilling inventory and a sound balance sheet. He also likes CPE, QEP, HK, CXO, GPOR.

QEP Resources (QEP) +2.8% premarket on news it plans to form a midstream master limited partnership, and expects to file a registration statement with the SEC in Q2 2013. QEP expects to initially contribute a majority of its gathering assets in Wyoming and North Dakota to the MLP.

Unseasonably high natural gas inventories going into mid-January support Sterne Agee's bearish outlook for gas amid what looks like another mild winter, as the firm suggests avoiding pure-play gas names such as Southwestern (SWN) and Ultra Petroleum (UPL). Only four companies have 40%-plus of 2013 estimated gas production hedged, the firm says: PXD, EGN, AREX, QEP.
