Ultra and Inverse ETFs: The Downside of Doubling Up [view article]
Interesting comments on what's under the hood at proshares ultrashorts. My understanding is that the the futures swaps (e-mini, etc.) have as the primary risk that of counterparty default. Proshares somewhat mitigates this by limiting the single counterparty concentration to about 8%. I called them up right after the Bear collapse and they told me Bear was not one of their counterparties at the time of the collapse and they were in the process of posting a whitepaper on their website to address this concern. As soon as I finish this post I am going to check out the website to see if it was posted. I do think this is an important area that many investors have no clue about and they need to go in with open eyes, but at the same time, if understood, an informed decision can be made.

Thanks again for good article and comments William Edwards

Getting to Know Long and Short ETFs [view article]
These ProShare funds are awesome. I went from 100% equities to all cash on October 12 then started buying SDD, SDS, QID, MZZ in late October/early Nov with half the cash, was up big thru Thanksgiving, cheering as the market declined because I was making money....then saw my gains evaporate as market experienced a follow thru rally in early December and I held (broke the rules) but then the market tanked in early January and I sold all the short ETF's around the 15 th of January just before the Jan panic low. Got kicked out of SDD at $85 on a real volatile day. The day after the Jan panic, I went long in, albeit too early, in QLD, SSO, UWM and MVV. Up nice now with total portfolio up 16% since Jan 1 and 20% since going to cash Oct 12. These leveraged ETF's are very good funds for someone who watches the market everyday and understands accumulation days and distribution days on the major indexes. I have been studying O'Neils books for 15 years and read "The Big Picture" in IBD everyday....and broke the rules by staying short, especially after the confirmation rally in early december and the failed rally attempts this winter. Overall these long/short ETF's are great but you have to know when to sell and not worry about Capital Gain taxes. Best for non-taxable accounts like 401 k's and IRA's. No reason to have individual company risk anymore cause bad news can destroy even the best of the best...look at ISGR that dropped $60 in one day last week on a profit miss. Could have double this performance had I been smart enough to stay in the short ETF's until the panic selling kicked in then went long on those crazy days. I had never shorted the market before and this is a real easy way to do it...plus you can't sell short in a retirement account but can buy short ETF's because these are technically "long" positions. globalmacro,
i am always cautious of "head fakes" in technical charts. i like to see 2-3 strong days of closes above resistance before jumping in.

    solar expert,
i like ldk as well, but have not researched them as extensively. i doubt they will outperform sol over the next 6 months, but i could be wrong. calling renesola garbage is a bit extreme. their management team is very impressive and their financial performance backs up my confidence in the company. i think the entire sector will do well as a result high oil prices and increased government subsidies. the u.s. recession could dampen the outlook though, so i am cautious at this moment and balance my portfolio with ultrashort etfs and precious metals stocks. best of luck to all.

Renesola is an absolutley garbage stock compared to its top competitors within China; LDK solar. LDK solar is currently building a major polysilicon factory in China contracted to fluor that is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008. When this factory is up and running LDK will obtain 42-50% margins resulting in unprecedented EPS growth. In the last year alone, LDK has more than tripled both its revenue and income growth. Above all, LDK has siphoned more long term contract that any other wafer, and ingot manufacturer in the world; including MEMC the current market leader. The company has also completely sold out all of its inventory for 2008, and 2009. EPS expectation for 2009 are expected to be over 8 dollars a share, and at its current price just shy of 35 LDK would have a pe ratio of 4. It also has one of the most experienced management teams in the business including numerous employees who used to work for the market leader MEMC. Why buy SOL, when you can buy the undisputed leader and premier player in this industry ldk solar? good post, but sol is GARBAGE. Reply

Comparing WFR with SOL is not quite valid because solar wafers are only part of WFRs business. The stock is reacting to forecasts of slowing computer chip demand. Reply

i like the idea of buying sol and other solars at good price points. i would hate losing a position in sol as it trades higher because the overall market is under pressure. what are the earnings forecast for 2008? Reply
