Though VMware, EMC, and BMC Software's Q1 guidance hasn't exactly stoked enthusiasm about the IT spending environment, Gartner is forecasting global IT spending will grow a healthy 4.2% in 2013 to $3.7T, after rising just 1.2% last year. A re-accelerating China, a stabilizing Europe, and a resolution (for now) of the fiscal cliff drama are all seen lifting demand. Needham thinks growth could hit 5%. (previous)

NASDAQ 100 futures -0.5% AH after Apple trades lower on mixed FQ1 numbers and light FQ2 revenue guidance. As one would expect, Apple chip suppliers are also lower. CRUS -6.5% AH. QCOM -1.1%. BRCM -1.7%. SWKS -5.1%. AVGO -1.3%. TQNT -1.4%.

PowerShares QQQ (QQQQ) - the eighth largest U.S.-listed ETF by market cap, with more than $17B in assets - has almost a fifth of its portfolio weighting in Apple (AAPL), which reports earnings following the closing bell. If AAPL has a big reaction to its report, expect the QQQQ to follow suit.
