- Friday, May 17, 10:41 AM Tableau's (DATA) IPO is as good as advertised. Shares opened at $47 and are currently at $49.82, up 61% from a raised IPO price of $31. That gives the analytics/data visualization software vendor a valuation of $2.86B, or a whopping 22x 2012 revenue. Rival Qlik (QLIK +4.6%) is up in sympathy - a bullish BMO note might also be helping. (S-1) (Pac Crest) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, May 15, 6:57 PM Tableau Software (DATA) raises its IPO price range to $28-$30 from a prior $23-$26; take that as one more sign of the Street's love of all things analytics/big data-related. The new price range translates into a valuation range of $1.61B-$1.72B, or 12.6x-13.5x 2012 sales. Rival Qlik (QLIK) has been rallying this month with the help of Tableau-related enthusiasm (though a strong Q1 report might not be hurting either). (S-1) (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, May 6, 10:52 AM More on Tableau/Qlik: 1) Pac Crest recently estimated providers of next-gen analytics tools control ~$800M of a $14B business intelligence software market, and that Qlik (QLIK) and Tableau (DATA) can double their share of it by 2016 (Tableau investors likely want faster growth). The firm points out "only 17% of information workers use data dashboard or BI tools as part of their job," and that the price, ease-of-use and installation cost advantages of next-gen tools are growing the market's reach. 2) Qlik has acquired NComVA, a Swedish developer of visualization tech. NCom's offerings will be integrated with the QlikView platform. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, May 6, 10:28 AM Tableau Software (DATA) sets an IPO price range of $23-$26. That means the analytics software vendor, which is offering 7.2M shares (5M new shares, 2.2M from insiders), is now looking to raise $166M-$187M, more than the $150M it initially sought. The price range spells a valuation of $1.32B-$1.5B for Tableau, which is competing with Qlik (QLIK), Tibco (TIBX), and several startups in a fast-growing market for tools that can process and intelligently visualize mountains of business data. Tableau had Q1 revenue of $40M (+62% Y/Y), and a net loss of $4M. (S-1) (2012 results) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 30, 2:20 PM Informatica (INFA -3%), Splunk (SPLK -1.9%), and Qlik (QLIK -3%), 3 names hyped as analytics/big data plays, slump in response to Microstrategy's (MSTR -11.1%) big Q1 miss, which includes a 24% Y/Y drop in produce license revenue. As is its custom, the business intelligence software vendor gives no reason for its miss, nor does it provide guidance or an earnings call. It is, however, happy to note its buyback program ($455M remaining) has been extended to April 2018. Microstrategy's numbers are overshadowing solid results from rival Actuate (BIRT +6.2%); the company posted 16% Y/Y Q1 license rev. growth, compared with nearly flat total rev. growth. Comment! - Monday, April 8, 2:28 PM Qlik (QLIK +3%) trades higher as its annual partner summit gets underway. The business intelligence/analytics software firm announced today nearly 1K partners out of a total of 1.5K are attending, and notes it derived 54% of its 2012 software license and first-year maintenance billings from partners. Shares rallied in February following a Q4 beat. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 9:51 AM The bloodletting in enterprise IT and telecom equipment names that followed F5's March quarter warning yesterday afternoon has spread, with some telecom component/chip names now among the companies getting hit hard. Any thoughts on QLIK's earnings? Absolutely atrocious! I have an article in the pipeline. - View all 10 replies

Ocean Man: I might move from 35 to 30, but I like to buy in the money. Moving past Feb expiry should help Mar volumes. -
J Mintzmyer: QLIK volumes are so low, it's ridiculous. My puts were in for $0.75 and they were only trading for $0.65. Not enough capital to arbitrage.

JCH57: We use their product at work. We have a lot of problems with it, and it's insanely expensive. Results are cool when they work. -
