- Wednesday, April 17, 7:22 AM Futures post sizable losses - the S&P 500 (SPY) -0.7% and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) -0.8% - as Europe fails to participate in a fairly broad global rally, the Stoxx 50 (FEZ) off 1.3%. Also not helping are Bank of America and Yahoo down more than 2% following earnings. 6 Comments
- Tuesday, April 16, 7:05 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures show at least an early bounce from yesterday's sorry action, +0.5%. Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) +0.6%. 1 Comment
- Monday, April 15, 10:48 PM Precious metals continue lower in volatile trade this evening, gold (GLD) off another 1.3% to $1,343/oz., and silver (SLV) tacking on another 3.3% in losses to $22.57. WTI crude oil slides 2.4% to $86.60/barrel. Stock index futures, however, show signs of a rebound, the S&P 500 (SPY) +0.3% and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) +0.5%. 12 Comments
- Monday, April 15, 6:57 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures -0.5%, Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) -0.4% as the liquidation in precious metals continues. Other sensitive commodities: WTI crude (USO) -2.5% to $88.76, and copper (JJC) -3.4% to $3.23. 6 Comments [On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 8:45 AM The 10-year Treasury yield falls 5 basis points on the session to 1.74% following the weak retail sales print. TLT +1.1% premarket, with the last month's big rally in bond prices bringing it back to flat YTD. S&P 500 (SPY) futures dip to a session-low, -0.5%. The QQQs off 0.5% premarket. 1 Comment [U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, April 11, 7:03 PM The pace at which new technologies are disrupting companies makes it dangerous to be a value investor, argues VC Ashvin Bachireddy. As mobile devices, cloud software, e-commerce, and much else upends old business models, investing in a BlackBerry or an OfficeMax/Office Depot due to a low P/E can prove painful. "While there may still be opportunities for value investing, you need to be cautious of businesses that appear to be on a slow decline." His remarks seem prescient in light of what happened today to several PC-related names with low multiples. 14 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, April 8, 2:17 PM Moderate early losses are erased and stocks turn higher in afternoon trade, SPY +0.35%, QQQ +0.3%. Consumer goods stocks lead the way, the XLP +0.8%, the XLY +0.7%. 5 Comments
- Friday, April 5, 8:35 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures -1.3% following the big miss for Nonfarm Payrolls. Treasury prices soar, the long bond up a full point and a half. TLT +2%. Crude oil tumbles, USO -1.5%, and gold flies, GLD +1%. 12 Comments
- Friday, April 5, 6:58 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures slide 0.5% and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) -0.5% ahead of this mornings non-farm payroll report. Europe is tumbling for a 2nd day, the Stoxx 50 (FEZ) -1.3%, led by Germany (EWG) -1.8%. 1 Comment [On the Move]
- Thursday, April 4, 7:06 AM Stock index futures (SPY +0.4%, QQQ +0.4%) post gains after the BOJ outdoes the Fed with the breadth of its stimulative efforts. The Nikkei's 3.2% gain looks even more impressive when considering the index was off 2.3% before the central bank announcement. DXJ +4% premarket. Comment!
- Wednesday, April 3, 2:11 PM Stocks are at session lows 2 hours before the bell, SPY -1.1%, QQQ -1%. Most sectors are lit up bright red, but financials - BAC -3.2%, JPM -2.7%, C -3.3% - lead the way down. Energy (XLE -2%) and resource stocks (XLB -1.3%) tumble along with commodity prices. Port in a storm, Apple gains 0.3%. Comment!
- Wednesday, April 3, 1:58 PM Gartner forecasts global IT spending will grow 4.1% this year to $3.8T; that represents a pickup from 2012's 2.1% growth. Hardware is expected to grow 8% to $718B as mobile strength offsets PC/printer weakness, and enterprise software 6.4% to $297B. Gartner: "The global steady growth rates are a calm ocean that hides turbulent currents beneath ... there are clear winners and losers over the next three to five years, as we see more of a transition from PCs to mobile phones, from servers to storage, from licensed software to cloud, or the shift in voice and data connections from fixed to mobile." Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 2, 7:04 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures +0.4% and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) futures +0.6% as Europe puts in a sizable rally on its first day back from a 4-day weekend. Stoxx 50 (FEZ) +1.2%. Apple -0.15% premarket following the Goldman capitulation. 9 Comments
- Monday, April 1, 10:12 AM More on ISM: The big decline was led by New Orders dropping to 51.4 from 57.8. Supplier Deliveries turns to contraction (times getting faster) at 49.4 vs. 51.4. The bright spot is a rise in Employment to 54.2 from 52.6. Stocks take a small hit, SPY -0.1%, QQQ -0.2%. (full report) Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, March 27, 12:47 PM "For the 1st time in long time I have begun to short big-cap techs," tweets high-profile tech newsletter writer Fred Hickey. He refers to the market's recent gains as " a dangerous, unsustainable Fed-induced rally." Last month, Hickey offered a downbeat view on tech stocks in Barron's, citing high multiples and weak PC, mobile phone, and enterprise IT demand. 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 27, 11:08 AM Stocks more than halve early losses 90 minutes into the session, SPY -0.4% an QQQ -0.3%. The financial sector (XLF -0.6%) is lit up red - not surprising given Europe's shuddering banking system. Google and Apple - each down more than 1% - lead tech lower. 5 Comments

It is getting tiring to have $QQQ flounder every day because of $AAPL. A re-balancing of the index is needed. - View all 7 replies
