- Wednesday, April 3, 12:31 PM The latest batch of data from IATA show a 3.7% increase in global airline passenger traffic in February with emerging markets making for ongoing sluggishness in Europe. Over the last four months, passenger demand has grown at a 9% annualized clip. IATA on global carriers: "Airlines are carefully managing capacity expansion, which is keeping the load factor at a record high." Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, September 6, 2012, 3:20 PM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) and Emirates Airline propose to form an alliance that could serve as a bit of a disrupter in the sector. The 10-year deal would move past code-sharing to include cross-selling seats on each other's flights. It could also spark more complaints from Delta Air Lines (DAL -1.5%) and Lufthansa (DLAKY.PK) over the high level of subsidies that Emirates receives from the Dubai government as the carrier broadens its reach. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 3:26 AM Qantas cancels bookings for 35 longer-distance Boeing (BA) 787-9s aircraft with a list price of $8.5B after making a FY net loss of A$245M ($257.4M), the airline's first since 1995. However, Qantas is keeping an order for the 787-8, 15 of which are due to be delivered in H2 next year. Boeing is also paying Qantas $433M, with over $300M for late deliveries. 2 Comments [Earnings, Top Stories]
- Thursday, June 7, 2012, 8:01 AM The inclusion of iPads by global carriers Singapore Airlines (SINGF.PK) and Jetstar (QUBSF.PK) on flights has been a raging success. Not only are passengers pleased with the diversion, but the cost savings of ditching the electronics equipment and wiring to provide inflight entertainment is enormous. By at least one estimate, a Boeing 777 could be 7% lighter by going with iPads. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 6:44 AM Deutsche Bank sees consolidation in the global airline industry as a way out for pressured carriers, as it identifies Qantas (QUBSF.PK) ripe for the picking. In addition, analysts with the bank believe AirAsia (AIABF.PK), Air China (AIRYY.PK), Delta Air Lines (DAL), United Continental (UAL) and US Airways Group (LCC) are in the mix to seek partners to improve capital efficiency. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 2:06 PM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) places a $2B order for jet engines from CFM International to supply its fleet of Airbus A320neo aircraft on order. CFM is a company that is owned 50-50 by GE and France's Snecma. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 6:40 AM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) puts on hold a plan to establish a full-service carrier in Asia after it ran in to trouble lining up a deal to build a hub in Malaysia or Singapore. The Asian carrier would have risked losing money and its investment-grade credit rating if it moved forward with its original plan. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 3:20 PM With an already difficult operating environment not looking to improve soon, Qantas (QUBSF.PK) has its credit rating cut to Baa3 from Baa2 by Moody's. U.S. traffic is holding up, but fares have been subject to price wars, while routes to Europe are suffering and Asia is "patchy." Rising fuel costs complete the bleak picture. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Friday, January 20, 2012, 4:41 AM Airbus (EADSF.PK) insists its A380 superjumbo is safe to fly, even as another set of hairline cracks is discovered in the jetliner's wings. Aussie engineers checking the superjumbos flown by Qantas (QUBSF.PK) are less sanguine, noting these so-called "tiny" cracks have a way of growing very quickly. (previously) Comment!
- Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 10:58 AM Jetstar (QUBSF.PK) announces it will be the first airline in the world to offer iPads (AAPL +1.4%) on board after it launches the service on select domestic and international flights. The Australian low-fare carrier says the iPads will be stocked with games, music, e-magazines, and the latest movies. 2 Comments [Global & FX, Tech]
- Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 6:48 AM Airbus (EADSY.PK) reports it delivered 44 aircraft last month and took down 193 new orders. A major contract that Airbus landed from Qantas Airways (QUBSF.PK) helped boost its YTD net order total to 1,231 - well ahead of rival Boeing's (BA) 428. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Sunday, October 30, 2011, 3:47 PM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) may resume flights as early as Monday Australian time after an arbitration court calls for an end to strikes and an employee lockout. 1 Comment
- Sunday, October 30, 2011, 4:29 AM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) leaves 70,000 passengers stranded after grounding its aircraft across the world due to a worsening strike over pay and plans to establish new Asian carriers. An industrial-relations watchdog is now considering whether to order an to end the strike, prevent a planned lock-out against unions, and pave the way for arbitration. Comment! [Top Stories, Global & FX]
- Friday, October 7, 2011, 6:53 AM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) says over 46K passengers have been affected by a strike initiated from unions representing engineers, baggage handlers, and pilots. The six-week old work stoppage is over the carrier's plan to cut jobs domestically and set up new carriers in Asia. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 8:17 AM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) plans to add flights to China by forming two new airlines in Asia and expanding the operations of its existing carriers in Vietnam, Singapore and Australia. The firm's CEO says the Asian markets are a "huge opportunity" for Qantas, and serving China with both premium and low-cost flights is "critical." Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 7:27 AM Qantas (QUBSF.PK) says it doubled profits to A$250M ($263M) on the strength of strong domestic travel. The firm increased revenue 8% (Y/Y), despite suffering a A$224M loss from weather events and natural disasters in FY11. The carrier's CEO dismissed a rumor an equity group was launching a takeover bid, calling the report "pure speculation." Comment! [Global & FX]
