- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 1:40 PM Food price increases resulting from the Midwest drought that ravaged crops might not be as steep as some expect, according to some analysis. Fruit and vegetables crops are relatively stable due to irrigation, while corn ingredients typically only make up a a small portion of many common packaged food items. For the time being beef and milk prices could actually dip as farmers sell off cattle that they can't feed effectively, though next year consumers could take the hit when the dwindling number of cattle directly affects beef and dairy prices. 7 Comments [Consumer, Commodities]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 9:08 AM Ralcorp (RAH) announces the acquisition of frozen meal maker Gelit for an undisclosed amount. The company anticipates that the deal will add $0.05 to GAAP accretion and $0.07 of cash accretion to EPS over the course of the first year following the closing of the transaction. Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 10:34 AM Shares of Ralcorp (RAH) move down 5.1% after the firm's twice-delayed FQ2 report finally gets released. The company missed the consensus EPS estimate of analysts, reporting $0.72 vs. $0.85, while knocking out in-line sales of $1.06B that marked a 16% Y/Y gain. In a separate announcement, Ralcorp says it snapped up privately-held Petri Baking Products for an undisclosed amount. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer, Earnings]
- Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 11:57 AM Ralcorp (RAH -0.1%) says it will report FQ2 earnings after the market closes today after twice delaying its report. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 16, 2012, 2:21 AM Ralcorp (RAH) announced late yesterday that it will further delay its FQ2 earnings report "in order to conclude both the internal and external in-depth reviews associated with its previously announced financial restatements." A new release date will be announced at some point. Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Monday, May 7, 2012, 10:23 AM Ralcorp (RAH -0.7%) will restate its FY 2011 and FQ1 2012 results to account for an extra charge of $54M in FQ4 associated with the Post brand cereal ops that were spun-off to Ralcorp's shareholders in February. Shares -0.7%. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 6:58 PM S&P announces some changes to its indexes: Post Holdings (POST, when issued) is replacing Comstock Resources (CRK) in the S&P MidCap 400 index, and Comstock will replace THQ (THQI) in the S&P SmallCap 600 index effective at the close of trading on Friday, Feb. 3. Ralcorp (RAH) is spinning off Post, which is expected to be completed on or about that date, pending final approvals. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, January 17, 2012, 9:28 AM Ralcorp's (RAH) board clears its plan to separate its Post Foods subsidiary and will distribute at least 80% of the unit's shares to holders. Shares of Post, which produces branded cereals, private-label foods for various retailers, and frozen baked goods for stores, restaurants and food-service firms, will trade under the symbol POST. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 7:56 AM Analysts with Wells Fargo take a crack at Ralcorp Holdings (RAH), initiating coverage at Market Perform with a price target of $96-$100. "We believe that Ralcorp's experienced management team, solid balance sheet, and strong free cash flow generation position the company to lead the consolidation of the private label food industry over the next several years." Shares -0.1% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 6:14 PM Ralcorp (RAH): FQ4 EPS of $1.34 misses by $0.04. Revenue of $1.22B (+8.3% Y/Y) in line. Files notification of late filing for FY2011 Form 10-K. Shares -0.4% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Commodities]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 1:43 PM A huge wheat harvest is pushing prices to 3-year lows - down 21% YTD - with analysts calling for another 6% drop before the end of the year. Bigger plantings in the U.S. and Canada, along with a recovery from a severe drought in Russia and Ukraine, led to the increased production. Companies looking to improve margins with cheaper wheat input costs: BGS, GIS, THS, RAH. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Saturday, October 8, 2011, 8:44 PM Markets sniff out weakness, and the relentless selling in financials may be no more than frontrunning John Paulson, whose Advantage Plus fund is reportedly off 47% through September's end. Redemptions - perhaps massive ones - are a possibility, meaning Paulson will have to unload financial shares, and others, he has been so fond of. One could do worse than picking a bottom in the XLF on the day he is forced to give up on the sector. 12 Comments [Financials, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, September 21, 2011, 3:15 PM General Mills' (GIS +3.7%) healthy earnings are proof the cereal industry is rebounding after enduring a brutal price war in 2010, even as it copes with rising food costs. In addition to General Mills, which reaffirmed its FY12 EPS outlook today, rivals Kellogg (K) and Ralcorp (RAH) have been keeping a lid on price cuts. (transcript) 1 Comment [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 5:30 PM Barclays thinks Ralcorp (RAH) turned down ConAgra's (CAG) overtures because it views its Post cereal business, which it plans to spin off, as undervalued by the market due to recent troubles. Barclays, which believes Ralcorp should trade higher based on a sum-of-the-parts analysis, expects the company to soon file for a Post spinoff. Comment! [Consumer, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 10:34 AM ConAgra (CAG -1.2%) CEO Gary Rodkin says the company will look at other deals after its rejection by Post cereal maker Ralcorp (RAH +0.5%). "We are ready and willing to leverage our capabilities and balance sheet for the right growth opportunities. This is a core strategic element of creating long-term value for ConAgra Foods," Rodkin says. (earnings) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, September 19, 2011, 5:11 PM Conagra (CAG) formally withdraws its $94/share all-cash offer for Ralcorp (RAH). Earlier today, Ralcorp rejected Conagra's bid, which valued the company at $5.2B. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Breaking News]
