- Friday, January 25, 11:21 AM Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI), and Lorillard (LO) say they will appeal a judge's ruling which orders them to place warnings on their products and websites admitting they misled consumers on the risks of smoking. The unsympathetic judge on the high-profile case ordered the tobacco trio to state: "Tobacco companies intentionally designed cigarettes to make them more addictive." 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 22, 1:36 PM It's going to keep getting harder to find a cigarette in 2013 if the state legislatures across the country get their way. Higher cigarette taxes are on the docket in a number of states with traditionally high numbers of smokers. Minnesota in particular, where nearly 16% of the population still smokes, the governor is seeking to boost the state cigarette tax rate to a new rate of $2.83 per pack, a move which is being lauded across the board by anti-smoking advocates. 23 Comments [Healthcare, Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 3:12 AM More on cigarette makers: Between them, Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI) and Lorillard (LO) expect to receive over $1.5B in credits that are connected to a 1998 settlement in which tobacco firms agreed to pay over $200B to cover smoking-related health costs. The companies can cut their payments based on market-share losses to rivals that didn't sign the deal. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 10:45 AM Tobacco stocks trade weak as a group with speculation on anti-tobacco measures sweeping across Europe. The word from across the pond is that the EU will step up health warnings. Decliners: Reynolds American (RAI -2.2%), Altria (MO -1.6%), Lorillard (LO -2.6%). 6 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 10:00 AM Lorillard (LO +0.4%) looks like the most attractive tobacco name, according to SA author Matthew Frankel. Though the group as a whole is a dividend seeker's paradise, Lorillard has the best growth track in the sector. Yield watch: Reynolds American 5.51%, Altria 5.29%, Lorillard 5.15%. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:04 AM Reynolds American (RAI) declares $0.59/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 5.41%. For shareholders of record Dec 10. Payable Jan 02. Ex-div date Dec 06. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 2:45 AM Judge Gladys Kessler yesterday approved the wording of "corrective statements" that tobacco companies must use in a two-year public advertising campaign in which they have to admit that they lied about the dangers of cigarettes going as far back as 1964. The firms, which are expected to appeal, have argued that such a move violates their free speech rights. 3 Comments [Consumer, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 7:21 AM Reynolds American (RAI) believes new innovations with products will help keep the company stay competitive even with smoking rates continuing to fall off. During the company's Investors Day presentation (webcast), a new electronic cigarette was unveiled that execs see providing lush margins and a strong growth track as adoption takes off. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 11:16 AM Reynolds American (RAI -4%) confirms in a 10-Q filing with the SEC a payment of $5M to Star Scientific (STSI -16.6%) in relation to the settlement of a patent case. The number is well-below what Star Scientific investors were expecting to see come into the company's coffers. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 10:37 AM Star Scientific (STSI -9.3%) falls lower in early trading with the sharp move being attributed to Reynolds American's (RAI -3.6%) Q3 report which didn't reveal any cash payments to the firm. Curious traders are anxious to get a handle on what the terms of a settlement between the two companies entails. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 7:21 AM Reynolds American (RAI): Q3 EPS of $0.79 in-line. Revenue of $2.12B (-3.8% Y/Y) misses by $80M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]

- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 10:57 AM Tobacco stocks slump after the Q3 report from Philip Morris (PM -2.9%) comes in sluggish. Despite higher prices, the industry is having trouble keeping demand up as governments start to enact stricter packaging and marketing rules across the globe. Decliners: British American (BTI -0.7%) -0.7%, Lorillard (LO -0.3%) -0.5%, Reynolds American (RAI -0.6%) -0.7%, Altria (MO -1%) -1.1%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
