- Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 3:17 PM The DOJ asks a federal appeals court to rehear a case over a FDA requirement that would force tobacco companies to place large graphic health warnings on cigarette packages. Previously, a three-judge panel in Washington backed the ruling of a lower court by finding the mandate infringed on First Amendment free speech protection. The bigger issue: At last count, 46M Americans still smoked despite stepped-up efforts by health organizations to cut into the number and reduced marketing spending by tobacco companies. Has the anti-smoking crusade now cut to the bone? 17 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, September 24, 2012, 7:45 AM A report from the FTC finds that tobacco players Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI), and Lorillard (LO) are spending less money on advertising as they focus on pricing. It's a bit of an ironic spot for the industry after companies spent billions to develop brand images - only to see products start to become an impersonal commodity subject to the whims of consumers looking for deals. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, August 24, 2012, 10:44 AM A U.S. appeals court strikes down a previous court ruling that requires cigarette companies to put graphic warning labels on tobacco products. Because the decision contradicts the ruling in a similar court case, the issue may ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court. Winning the day: MO,RAI,LO. 7 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 6:55 AM Big tobacco companies see explosive growth in e-cigarettes as restrictions in the industry broaden again. The smokeless form of cigarettes contains nicotine-infused water that is inhaled as a vapor, allowing smokers to legally "light up" insides restaurants and buses. Making the switch: MO, PM, RAI, LO, VGR, BTI. 11 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 12:25 PM The CDC reports a large increase in the usage of large cigars and loose tobacco that makes up in part the long trend of declining cigarette consumption in the U.S. Though demand trends are in play, tobacco manufacturers have also been able to skirt the higher taxes and regulation on cigarettes by adding weight to many small cigars so they can be reclassified as large cigars. Lighting it up: MO, RAI, LO. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 11:48 AM More on Reynolds American (RAI -1.2%) Q2: net profit +35% to $443M, reflecting legal charges last year, while increased prices and cost-cutting this year this year also helped to outweigh a 7% fall in volume to 18.1B cigarettes. Volume for smokeless tobacco brands +11%. Reiterates FY EPS forecast of $2.91-3.01 vs. consensus of $2.95. Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 8:06 AM Reynolds American (RAI): Q2 EPS of $0.79 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $2.18B (-4% Y/Y) misses by $70M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]

- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 3:52 PM Reynolds American (RAI): Declares $0.59/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Dividend yield 5.2%. For shareholders of record Sep 10; payable Oct 01; ex-div date Sep 06. (PR) 4 Comments [Dividends]
- Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 1:32 PM An appellate court in New York upholds a ruling from a lower court that struck down a mandate requiring NYC retailers to display graphic signs warning consumers about the negative health effects of smoking. The court found that sellers such as LO, MO, and RAI have protection under federal law for promotional activities that supersedes local prohibitions. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 1:51 PM Reynolds American (RAI +0.8%) will match a 6% price increase on cigarettes from Altria (MO +0.4%), effective immediately. Though the actions mark the first price hikes in the industry this year, they also arrive in a climate of cooling state excise taxes and the high-profile failure of a $1-a-pack tax in California to pass muster with voters. Lorillard (LO +1.6%) is holding prices pat for the moment. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 11:41 AM These 20 stocks will do well no matter what, UBS says: SUN, KMI, NUE, MWV, MAS, IRM, WYNN, LEG, RAI, MO, BMY, JNJ, CINF, PBCT, SAI, PAYX, FTR, WIN, PGN, POM. These stocks boast strong dividend payouts, and "tend to provide the most consistent alpha without the need for more tactical management." 9 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 9:15 AM California's proposed tobacco tax has been been narrowly voted down, according to voting tallies on the California Secretary of State website. Tobacco names such as RAI, MO, LO, could get a lift as the initiative was viewed as having a big impact on the direction proposals in other states go as well. 11 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 12:33 PM Tobacco names trade lower, as voters in California decide on a potential $1-a-pack tax on cigarettes (Previous: I, II). Though a new tax would hit firms in much different ways, the high-profile battle is considered a trend-setting event in the overall war against Big Tobacco that affects all players. The industry spent $47M to try and defeat the bill, while supporters raised $12M - including $500K from NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. MO -0.6%, RAI -1.0%, LO -0.7%, PM -0.3%. 11 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 9:29 AM The tobacco industry is watching California closely today as voters decide whether to increase the cigarette tax by $1 to $1.87 a pack. Californians are also voting in congressional races, while the citizens of San Jose will decide on a pensions revamp for city employees. 1 Comment
