- Friday, March 22, 1:38 PM More on Pac Crest's downgrade of Rackspace (RAX -1.1%): Analyst Michael Bowen gives shares a "fair value estimate" of $45, and thinks enterprise OpenStack cloud infrastructure clients "will demand price concessions for larger or longer commitments and compress margins." He also makes note of Rackspace's embrace of tiered pricing for OpenStack services, an element of its recent price cuts. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, March 22, 9:33 AM Pac Crest cuts Rackspace (RAX -1.1%) to Sector Perform, sending shares back towards $50. The firm upgraded Rackspace last August, following a strong Q2 report. FBN launched Rackspace at Sector Perform two days ago. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 20, 12:34 PM FBN launches coverage on a slew of enterprise/cloud software and Web hosting/CDN service plays. Akamai (AKAM +1.9%), Equinix (EQIX +0.6%), VMware (VMW +1.3%), Citrix (CTXS +1.3%), Salesforce (CRM +0.7%), and NetSuite (N +1.7%) have been started at Outperform, while Rackspace (RAX +2.6%), Workday (WDAY), and Concur (CNQR -1.3%) have been started at Sector Perform. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 6:37 PM IBM has recently eyed both Rackspace (RAX) and SoftLayer as buyout targets, a former IBM exec tells GigaOm. Meanwhile, EMC is said to be uninterested in SoftLayer - Reuters reported yesterday both EMC and IBM have been in talks to buy the company. Rackspace (unlike SoftLayer) is a major backer of the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform, which IBM just threw its weight behind. The former exec notes IBM's historical preference to flesh out its product lines via M&A. "IBM does not want to fund its own development because past history shows we’re not very good at it." Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, March 15, 10:27 AM After opening nearly unchanged, Rackspace (RAX -3.7%) is selling off in the wake of a report IBM and EMC (among others) are eying rival SoftLayer Technologies. Wells Fargo is arguing SoftLayer competes more with Amazon than Rackspace, and that investors should take the news in stride. But others on the Street are a little more concerned. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 14, 5:42 PM IBM and EMC are among the companies in the running to buy Web hosting/cloud infrastructure provider SoftLayer Technologies in a deal that could sport a $2B+ price tag, Reuters reports. SoftLayer, locked in fierce competition with Rackspace (RAX) and Amazon, differentiates itself in part by offering hybrid solutions that feature both dedicated and virtual servers. The report comes as IBM targets $7B in 2015 cloud revenue, and EMC subsidiary VMware (VMW) launches a new cloud infrastructure service. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 6, 1:51 PM Rackspace (RAX) tries to grow its enterprise cloud mindshare by launching OpenCenter, an interface/API for managing and automating private clouds. Rackspace undoubtedly hopes OpenCenter-run private clouds will be deployed in tandem with public clouds running on Rackspace's gear. The announcement comes shortly after the company mentioned at a Deutsche conference (transcript) it's intent on servicing "mission-critical" enterprise workloads over time, and sees a big opportunity in providing support for private cloud deployments. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 6:28 PM Still looking to produce $7B in cloud-related sales in 2015, IBM is fully embracing the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform: Big Blue says it will dedicate 500 developers to OpenStack projects, and says the platform will serve as the foundation of its SmartCloud management platform for private and public clouds. Naturally, IBM wants to package SmartCloud with its servers and storage. Rackspace (RAX), Red Hat, H-P, and many others are already backing OpenStack in an effort to provide an open-source alternative to Amazon, VMware, and Micorosoft. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 27, 11:08 AM Rackspace (RAX -0.2%) expands its cloud database offerings by acquiring ObjectRocket, a provider of hosted unstructured databases relying on the increasingly popular NoSQL structure. Rackspace already supports a variety of structured database platforms; NoSQL, often used in big data projects, can provide better scalability and support for unconventional data formats, at the expense of consistency. Terms aren't disclosed. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, February 22, 1:20 PM A 33% bandwidth price cut from Rackspace (RAX -2.1%) for cloud infrastructure and CDN services is hurting CDN leader Akamai (AKAM -2.1%) and data center colocation/interconnection firms Equinix (EQIX -1.1%) and InterXion (INXN -2.2%). Rackspace's cuts, which also include volume discounts for storage, are eye-opening in light of past remarks about competing against Amazon (AMZN -0.5%) and other cloud rivals in ways other than price. Rackspace's move follows major cuts (I, II) from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, and a Q4 miss that featured slowing server growth. (Barron's) Comment! [Tech]

Rackspace (RAX) slashes cloud pricing by 33% and announces tiered pricing for its open cloud product portfolio. Shares +0.3% premarket, off 25% YTD. (PR) Update at 8:50: The news is now taking hold, shares -6%. 2 Comments [Tech, Breaking News]
- Sunday, February 17, 7:04 PM Rackspace (RAX) and Equinix (EQIX) could fall on Tuesday thanks to a critical Barron's column. The paper notes RAX and EQIX respectively trade at 58x and 62x 2013E EPS, and suspects this is justified by hopes of giant dividends after the firms convert into REITs (EQIX plans to do this by Jan. '15). However, each company's cash flow is largely eaten up by capex (partly to address booming data center demand), thus billions in debt might be needed to finance post-REIT dividends. Also criticized are peers DLR and DFT, which are already REITs. (RAX's Q4: I, II, III) 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]

[On the Move] - Wednesday, February 13, 12:13 PM Rackspace (RAX -17.3%) is crashing thanks to a Q4 miss caused by slowing server growth and a declining upgrade rate. On the earnings call, management stated execution and macro issues caused the upgrade rate drop, but the transition to cloud services from traditional hosting has also been mentioned as a reason for slowing growth. Rackspace expects 2013 capex of $375M-$445M, up from 2012's $338M. Staples has been added as an OpenStack cloud customer, and management boasts of a major lead on IT giants supporting the platform.
