- Thursday, May 9, 12:45 PM Four downgrades are levied on Rackspace (RAX -26.3%) following yesterday's Q1 revenue miss, accompanied by worrying business metrics. Slowing growth and a slumping EBITDA margin (due to price cuts) are problems that will get worse as Microsoft and Google ramp their cloud offerings, argues CLSA, which has cut shares to Sell. The firm adds checks indicate "mid-tier to large firms" are increasingly migrating from hosting to cloud services, and expects OpenStack to be immaterial to RAX's bottom line for the next 1-2 years. Stephens, making a contrarian upgrade to Overweight, thinks "new contract wins are on the horizon," as Rackspace targets enterprises. EQIX -2.2%. COR -4.2%. INXN -3.3%. VMW -2.5%. - Wednesday, May 8, 5:16 PM Rackspace (RAX) now -15.8% AH following its Q1 revenue miss. Server count rose 4% Q/Q to 95.1K, but average revenue/server fell $2 to $1,308 after steadily rising in 2012. Also, the net upgrade rate fell to 0.9% from Q4's 1.2% and Q3's 1.6%, and installed base growth fell to just 0.1% from Q4's 0.5% and Q3's 0.8%. Dedicated cloud (hosting) revenue +15% Y/Y (+18% in Q4) to $271.3M and still 75% of total. Public cloud (OpenStack) +40% (+49% in Q4) to $90.9M - investors might be looking for faster growth, given Amazon and Microsoft's growth rates. Capex was $125.4M (35% of revenue), +43% Q/Q and +52% Y/Y. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 8, 4:06 PM Rackspace (RAX): Q1 EPS of $0.20 in-line. Revenue of $362.2M (+20% Y/Y) misses by $5M. Adjusted free cash flow of -$1M. Shares -3.8% AH. CC at 4:30PM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, February 13, 12:13 PM Rackspace (RAX -17.3%) is crashing thanks to a Q4 miss caused by slowing server growth and a declining upgrade rate. On the earnings call, management stated execution and macro issues caused the upgrade rate drop, but the transition to cloud services from traditional hosting has also been mentioned as a reason for slowing growth. Rackspace expects 2013 capex of $375M-$445M, up from 2012's $338M. Staples has been added as an OpenStack cloud customer, and management boasts of a major lead on IT giants supporting the platform. - Tuesday, February 12, 4:27 PM More on Rackspace's Q4: Server count +1.7% Q/Q to 90.5K; it had risen 4.8% in Q3. Total customers +4% Q/Q to 205.6K. Net upgrade rate fell to 1.2% from Q3's 1.6%. Average revenue/server +2% Q/Q to $1,310. Adjusted free cash flow +14% Q/Q to $39M. Capex was $88M (25% of revenue). Gross margin +120 bps Q/Q to 73%. Dedicated cloud (hosting) revenue +18% Y/Y and 75% of total. Public cloud (OpenStack) +49% and 25% of total. RAX -8.9% AH. CC at 4:30PM ET (webcast), look for questions about competition from Amazon and others. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]

- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 2:14 PM Richly-valued Rackspace (RAX -5.4%) is selling off after delivering a decent (but not spectacular) Q3 report (I, II) - shares are still up strongly from July levels. Rackspace noted on its earnings call it's seeing healthy early interest in its OpenStack cloud infrastructure solutions, whose scalability help Rackspace better compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and that it has led to "conversations with large enterprise customers that we just weren't having a year ago." Rackspace is hoping its service quality and user control will help counter Amazon's pricing edge. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 4:22 PM More on Rackspace: Server count +4.8% Q/Q to 89K, total customers +3.5% to 197.6K. Adjusted free cash flow was $34.1M, up from Q2's $28.7M. - Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 11:34 AM Rackspace (RAX +12%) is taking off after posting a decent Q2 report featuring growing cash flow and healthy customer data, and getting upgraded by Jefferies and Pac Crest in response. Jefferies predicts revenue growth will re-accelerate in 2013, fueled by demand for Rackspace's just-launched OpenStack cloud infrastructure solutions. 14.8% of Rackspace's float was shorted as of July 13.
