Rackspace Hosting, Inc. Q2 2008 Earnings Call Transcript [view article]
I love the free transcripts. I understand that the people who create them are not usually native speakers of English. It's possible that Mr. Pichler is not the clearest speaker ever, I didn't listen so don't know. But this really is the most garbled transcript I've read on SA.

My favorite quote: "We conservatives are longer and require larger upfront investments." Personally I think people should leave their political views out of earnings calls.

    General Discussion on RAX
One more item:"In 2008, Fortune magazine ranked Rackspace Hosting #32 on its 2008 list of “100
Best Companies to Work For.” Stressing the "happy employee" axiom is important for investors. As a shareholder, and living less than a mile from Rackspace's new facilities, I believe I'll walk over someday soon and ask for a tour. If I am allowed to, I'll get back here and let you know how it was. The NE area of San Antonio loves this company, as RAX's breathing new life into a very depressed area of our city.

BTW, As we are all aware, "a happy employee is a productive employee." The annual list by Computerworld magazine of the 100 best places to work for IT professionals ranked Rackspace 8th while USAA came in 20th.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, FreightTrain! No, RAX is NOT doing the construction around the Mall HQ. That is being done by other interests. Reply

walkwithalimp - are you saying that RAX owns not only their office space (a former mall) but that RAX is also purchasing surrounding real estate (residential, condo, shopping, business centers etc.)?? I wasn't sure what you meant by it being self contained. Reply

Are IPOs Heating Up? A123 Files. [view article]
What's striking is the R&D expenses of $7 Million for three months ended Mar 08, compared to $13M for year 2007. At this rate, 2008 R&D amounts to $28M! They do mention in their S-1 that they anticipate increased R&D due to personnel expansion. But with $50M spent on R&D so far, one would expect some returns and/or same level of R&D spending if not more. Reply

Rackspace IPO Settles for Half Its Hoped-For Price [view article]
    It closed at 10.90
If its true that an IPO is normally priced at about 10-15% discount to cover some downside for initial investors, then given the $12.5 final price, it should have closed atleast at 12.5.
The current market/economic situation could have contributed to its lower than expected closing. But shouldn't that have been considered while deciding the final price?
Seems like its almost impossible for anyone to feel the market pulse.

As a resident of the Alamo City and living almost next door to RAX, I can tell you there's an enormous amount of construction going on in support of the company. They just moved into a giant mall. They own the entire thing. Residentials, Condos, Shopping, Business Centers all going up around Rackspace. It will be self contained. Now up 7% from Friday with high volume, I can see RAX doing very well in a couple of years. Reply

Living in San Antonio and 1 mile from RAX, I can tell you there's an enormous amount of construction planned and already underway in support of RAX. Starbucks in place! Condo's, Shopping, Residential, etc. to make the area self contained. Reply

A123 batteries rock the party. the B&D tools built around them are as powerful as corded tools and fully recharge during a coffee break.

and they supposedly last for thousands of cycles.

Thanks for the informative posting. Zachary, what is the difference between RAX and Exodus a web hosting company that went bankrupt in the high tech bust of 2001. Reply

I agree with the author, a real story stock and a disruptive technology. This company, unlike many, has significant orders from tool makers as well as the auto companies. The issue here is ramp up, not lack of a proven technology. Reply

I couldn't disagree more. Have you seen the investment and commitments that they have made in their community? The founders and still active leaders are from the city and have no intentions of "exit[ing]". Take a hard look at their commitments and show me the logic here!

If you truly know anything about this company (I have been a customer of theirs for sometime), you will see that they offer something that no one in the business can match - they have tagged it as 'Fanatical Support', and whilst it is great for marketing, it really is a rare offering that you just don't come across these days.

    Rackspace IPO Overview [view article]
"and truly interested in helping clients grow to fill their own business requirements."

That sure is a weighted sentiment. From my experience, in contrast to most webhosting companies, Rackspace is more than just interested in helping clients grow, they are actively involved. I hope that in a market of failures, they continue to grow as they have been doing consistently. A buy for me!
