Saul, you start off with some good points, but then you pick a company that you do think would be eligible for "windfall taxes", i.e., confiscation of personal property without just compensation.
WTH gives you the right to judge who's property gets confiscated, the right to arbitrarily concoct a formula based on your personal whim, and the authority to discern it's relative morality?

We know why the odd couple of Hillary & Obama (for clarity purposes, we'll just refer to them as "HO") want to confiscate money from the shareholders of energy companies and gift it to people who didn't earn it --> HO wants to buy voters with other people's money.

This isn't anything new, and if HO can get away with it now, HO's tentacles will pillage any company, anytime, for no other reason than the company these shareholders invested their hard earned after tax dollars survived the competition, the military attacks on equipement and personel such as those ongoing in Nigeria & the ME, and the childish whims and pandering of Democrat Socialists in Congress.

Were you to be put in charge of deciding which shareholders to attack, who would be the next 1,000 or so companies would you deem meets your criteria to pillage after RIM?

If HO is going to send a gift wrapped $1,000 to every middle class & below resident paid for by a shareholder, you're going to have to extend this out WAY past the oil industry.

For instance, Chevron (CVX), of which both my son and I are investors in, only has 215,000 shareholders. They had a relatively good 2nd quarter, even if they are down 15% since the talk of confiscating - or in the words of Maxine Waters - "Socialising, Nationalizing" gained steam. If you confiscate 1 HO present from each shareholder, that's going to be a drop in the bucket!<p>

Why, for HO to be successful, you'd need 1,000 compaines the size of Chevron, and there's only 3 in the US that are larger - what are you going to do? What ARE you going to do?

Just do me a favor, Saul. When you and HO decide how many vote buying HO gifts my son and I are going to have to pay for, can you at least send me a little picture of where my HO gifts went, what country they're from, and which HO member campaigns they donated my HO gift to?

    Saul,

Not only one of the best posts of the year, but you are surely in the running for title of the year with, "Houston to Obama!"

Thanks for the time and effort on our behalf, my friend.

    AlexS,

The only "Change" we need is to remove the Democrats from power once more so we can STOP adopting the myriad laws, regulations and resulting lawsuits they and their Socialist friends just love, which are CHOKING the manufacturing and mining sectors of our economy. Then maybe we can get back to living normal, productive lives once more, instead of having to waste so much time concerning ourselves with their childish nonsense.

I have read this extended exchange with fascination. Full disclosure: I will soon be 79 years old and have been a registered Republican since changing sides in 1954. Although I am clearly a beneficiary of the legislation which has favored the "old geezers". I am worried about the burden that will be placed on our 8 grand children, ranging in age from 25 years to 8 months. I see the government in Washington and in the state capitols as seriously corrupt. The legislature in my home state of Florida provides free healthcare for all members and their families. ( the president of the state senate allegedly has net worth of 6 million) But the Florida legislature has told everybody that budgets for mental health, education, etc. will have to be cut because of tax shortfalls. Funny thing, there are Democrats in that Legislature but I don't see them insisting the legislature give up free healthcare for the solons. Without term limits, a member of a legislature can return again and again and gain committee chairmanships and POWER. Then special interests colonize the legislator and that person no longer represents their supposed constituents, but the special interests. I have seen this happen again and again with both Republicans and Democrats. We desperately need a term limits amendment to the Constitution since the Supremes ruled state enacted limits "unconstitutional... far as OBAMA! is concerned,if you are not a subscriber to the WEEKLY STANDARD, got to the library and get the August 11 issue. Page 24 to 32 contains a very unemotional, factual article that covers Obama in his own words and actions in Chicago and the Illinois legislature. Obama comes across as the most radicl serious candidate for president in our history. Further he seems to speak with a forked tongue.Compare the quotations from his speech to the Democratic Convention in 2004 with what he said at various times and places in Illinois. He is truly flying under false colors( no pun intended). I will hold my nose and vote for McCain just like I voted for him in the primary. Sadly, our choices for president all my life have seemed to boil down to picking the "evil of the two lessers" Reply

Jack Gordon: you are right; My Republicans are spending like drunken sailors. Unfortunately, if you listen to what the Annointed One is promising to do, he will spend MORE! Nationalized healthcare, carbon taxes, or cap and trade, more $1000 checks/bribes to get people to vote for him, the list goes on and on. He has not met a group of people yet that he hasn't promised something to that will cost other people money. Except for those who supply 90% of the tax revenue. Those SOB's are going to get soaked! But the 50% of the country supplying little-to-no tax revenue, he promises to give them lots of goodies! How could he not win the election? over 50% of the voters pay little or no tax. He promises to give them lots of money. It cost them nothing so they say "heck yeah, I'll vote for that guy. He's giving me something for nothing." Now the guys who have to pay for it (that's me and probably you) have no choice. They are in the minority, they will get outvoted by the takers and the law requires they give up their hard earned money for redistribution to the takers.

Put a little weight on the guy, teach him spanish and he's a dead ringer for Hugo Chavez!

Please don't mistake my quote of the "Redistribution&q... comment as my support for same. In fact, I am in violent opposition to redistribution and I think eventually it may take a violent opposition to get the government's hands out of my pocket. With an Annointed One's election, I fear a tax revolt may be the only option. Hence his opposition to the Second Amendment and our right to bear arms. You don't put in place policies like he is eschewing and spewing without an armed military to back them up. Just ask Hugo! Reply

    CT & Mmarrk:
"Redistribution of wealth is a role of government." I agree, if you are talking about a Socialist government. I have heard law professors expounding that theory. Their education was at Berzerkley, so it's not suprising that would be their opinion. However, I don't recall the "Redistribution Clause" being in the U.S. Constitution. It is, however, in the Communist Manifesto. Is that the government you are referring to?

I worked for an oil co. for 38 years, along the way I noticed that when the company made money they spent money, hired new employees, build new units, explored for more oil, did more research, hired contractors, the whole community prospered. When the company did not make money, they stopped spending money, layed off employees etc... you get the point (I hope). those big profits go to the people who work, Obama wants to give it to everyone, even those who do not contribute to the economy, this soon discourages people from producing, why work when it will be given to you anyway? that is why Obamas (and all progressives ) plan will destroy our economy Reply

no friend of Repubs or Democrats at this pt, parties of the "ruling class" at this pt... but Obama and his taxation policies are not the answer, better to demand efficiencies with the $$ they currently receive(take) and stop the wasting! financial bailouts, wars, subsidizing negative/destructive policies (corn ethanol)

taxing co.s that provide necessary goods and services food, shelter, energy, health etc is only right, within limits
they get more than enough $$ from us as it is

RIG is doing most of their business in foreign parts of the world, where they pay a chunk of their taxes. They still pay $ 700+ M taxes per year in the US. It could be more if the leading political minds in the US were not dumb enough to keep this fabulous company out of their country.

In the meantime I hope for the sake of my retirement account, that if the windfall tax materializes, RIG will move their headquarters from Houston to the tax heavens of the Caymans in a heartbeat, where they already have an office.

Sometimes it is better to be happy with what you got and not getting greedy. That freaking little former city organizer that promotes the wind fall tax on oil companies must be out of his mind.

mcadoo, the mere fact that Obama is running has already prompted the administration to take steps to mitigate the Iraq disaster. Reply
