- Monday, May 20, 10:15 AM Chinese Internet stocks jump in response to Qihoo's Q1 beat and very strong Q2 guidance, highlighted by ramping search ad sales and soaring online game revenue. YY +6.5%. RENN +6.8%. NTES +5.5%. BIDU +2.4%. PWRD +3.2%. SOHU +3%. SINA +2.3%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 10:30 AM A downgrade to Perform from Oppenheimer's Andy Yeung sends Renren (RENN -3.3%) lower. Shares barely moved yesterday after the company beat Q1 estimates, but guided for Q2 revenue of $55M-$57M, below a $61.6M consensus. Yeung argues China's social networking landscape has "changed with a more mobile-centric internet environment and the rise of Sina Weibo and Tencent's WeChat," (investors seem to have long figured that out), and is worried about growing investments in mobile, online video, and daily deals. On its earnings call, Renren admitted "advertising remains challenging due to increasing competition, and it continually shifts over user time to mobile." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

In addition to Qihoo (previous), winners include Renren (RENN +12.2%), YY (YY +13.3%), Baidu (BIDU +3.8%), Sina (SINA +2.8%), Sohu (SOHU +3.4%), Changyou (CYOU +4.3%), and Perfect World (PWRD +5%). YY is now up 20% since posting a strong Q1 report on Thursday afternoon; revenue rose 130.5% Y/Y to RMB315M ($50.7M), and EPS of $0.23 beat consensus by $0.06. Revenue is expected to hit RMB330M-340M in Q2. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

[Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 3:57 PM 'Tis the season for covering profitable tech shorts. A slew of beaten-down tech names, many of them with giant short interests, are joining RIM and Chinese solar stocks in closing higher today, even as the NASDAQ finishes lower. GRPN +3.7% RENN +3.6%. SPWR +6.8%. ZNGA +3%. JIVE +2.5%. BIDU +5%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 12:33 PM Sina (SINA -2.1%), Baidu (BIDU -1.8%), Sohu (SOHU -2.3%), Youku (YOKU -2.4%), and Renren (RENN -1.5%) slump following news a People's Congress committee will decide this week on a law requiring Internet users to register their real names to have Web access. Sina was required earlier this year to implement real-name registration for Weibo, but has admitted it isn't yet able to verify the identities of all posters. The state-run People's Daily has been publishing editorials calling for greater Web regulation. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, December 14, 2012, 3:57 PM Chinese tech ADRs are closing with solid gains after the Chinese government ended its $1B limit on share ownership by sovereign wealth funds and central banks, fueling a big rally in Shanghai. It wasn't too long ago the group dived on bad regulatory news. LDK +6.8%. STP +6.8%. YGE +5.1%. TSL +5.1%. SOHU +3.4%. RENN +2.9%. DANG +6.2%. CTRP +5.3%. CYOU +3.8%. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 10:24 AM Some marquee Chinese Internet stocks are slumping, potentially on worries about the SEC's suits against the Chinese arms of the Big-4 U.S. accounting firms. Baidu (BIDU -5.1%), Sina (SINA -6.6%), Youku Tudou (YOKU -4.2%), Sohu (SOHU -3%), Perfect World (PWRD -1.2%), and NetEase (NTES -4%) are among the losers. Renren (RENN +2.5%) is higher following yesterday afternoon's Deutsche upgrade. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 6:17 PM Renren (RENN) +2.2% AH after receiving an upgrade to Hold from Deutsche, which cites valuation. The firm is encouraged by Renren's gaming revenue growth and user adds, and sees its operating loss declining to $44M in 2013 from $91M in 2012 as its investment pace slows down. Renren fell 6.4% in regular trading, making new post-IPO lows along the way. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 9:23 AM Renren (RENN) -5.3% following its Q3 report. Though Q3 EPS beat estimates with the help of stock buybacks, guidance for Q4 revenue of $45M-$47M is below a $51.1M consensus. Gaming sales rose 120% Y/Y and made up nearly half of revenue. But Internet ad sales fell 14% due to competition and the mobile shift. Once hyped as the Facebook of China, Renren is proving just one player is a crowded Chinese social media landscape that includes Sina's Weibo and Tencent's Qzone. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 6:06 PM Renren (RENN): Q3 EPS of -$0.01 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $50.4M (+47.2% Y/Y) in-line. Shares +2.1% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 10:22 AM Baidu (BIDU -4.1%) falls in response to the Q4 guidance and earnings call commentary accompanying its Q3 beat. The fact Citi is downgrading shares all the way to Sell from Buy also isn't helping - the firm's target has been cut in half to $95. Piper's Gene Munster is taking comfort in better-than-expected customer ads, and argues Qihoo (QIHU +0.6%), the subject of much recent angst, isn't a major long-term threat. Also lower: SINA -1.8%. SOHU -1.4%. RENN -2.6%. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 9:55 AM Even with a big upcoming lockup expiration, Facebook (FB +21.6%) shorts are rushing to cover following a Q3 beat fueled by growing mobile ad sales, and an upbeat earnings call (I, II) focused on rising monetization. Social networking and mobile ad peers are joining in on the fun: LNKD +5.4%. RENN +4.9%. SINA +2.2% MM +10.7%. VELT +5.4%. Zynga (ZNGA +0.5%) is largely being left out after Facebook noted its Payments revenue share is quickly declining. Zynga announced layoffs yesterday and reports this afternoon.
