Wednesday, May 15, 10:30 AM A downgrade to Perform from Oppenheimer's Andy Yeung sends Renren (RENN -3.3%) lower. Shares barely moved yesterday after the company beat Q1 estimates, but guided for Q2 revenue of $55M-$57M, below a $61.6M consensus. Yeung argues China's social networking landscape has "changed with a more mobile-centric internet environment and the rise of Sina Weibo and Tencent's WeChat," (investors seem to have long figured that out), and is worried about growing investments in mobile, online video, and daily deals. On its earnings call, Renren admitted "advertising remains challenging due to increasing competition, and it continually shifts over user time to mobile." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

Friday, May 10, 2:01 PM Responding to Chinese media reports, Renren (RENN +0.7%) confirms it has laid off employees in its Wireless unit, which was formed earlier this year to consolidate the company's mobile app/services efforts. However, Renren denies reports it has cut jobs at its Nuomi daily deals unit, and says the business is expanding; no comment was apparently given regarding reports of cuts at the company's Games unit. Nuomi was responsible for $5.6M of Renren's $16.7M Q4 net loss, and had just $5.4M in revenue. Renren recently signaled it would ramp its Android game development, as it tries to offset social networking share losses. Comment! [Tech]
Monday, May 6, 2:30 PM Chinese Internet stocks are surging after equities rallied in Shanghai and Hong Kong in spite of a major drop in China's services PMI. In addition to Qihoo (previous), winners include Renren (RENN +12.2%), YY (YY +13.3%), Baidu (BIDU +3.8%), Sina (SINA +2.8%), Sohu (SOHU +3.4%), Changyou (CYOU +4.3%), and Perfect World (PWRD +5%). YY is now up 20% since posting a strong Q1 report on Thursday afternoon; revenue rose 130.5% Y/Y to RMB315M ($50.7M), and EPS of $0.23 beat consensus by $0.06. With Renren's social network increasingly overshadowed by Tencent and Sina, gaming has turned into a priority for the company - its Renren Games unit already employs ~700 people, and has contributed to an R&D spending surge.
