- Wednesday, June 12, 4:52 PM Spreadtrum (SPRD) +24.3% AH after resuming trading in the wake of its big Q2 guidance hike. Mobile chipmakers with decent Chinese exposure are rallying in sympathy; in addition to the numbers, Spreadtrum's remarks about strong demand for low-end smartphones in China and other emerging markets are likely going over well. RFMD +2% AH. SWKS +3%. QCOM +0.5%. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 12, 11:47 AM Maxim joins JPMorgan and Susquehanna in reporting of Galaxy S4 weakness: analyst Ashok Kumar says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is cutting shipments due to weak sales and rising channel inventory, and that checks indicate consumers are opting for the cheaper Galaxy S III. He thinks touch controller supplier Synaptics (SYNA -2.7%) could be affected; others possibly at risk include ATML, RFMD, BRCM, PANL, TQNT, ANAD, and SWKS. As far as suppliers go, much still depends on how much demand is simply shifting to mid-range phones, or to rival high-end devices such as HTC's One, Sony's Xperia Z, LG's Optimus G, and Lenovo's K900. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 12:23 PM More on Charter's upgrade of RF Micro (RFMD +4.5%): Analyst Ed Snyder expects RF Micro to score a power amplifier design win for the iPhone 5S. He thinks the value of the company's company's iPhone content will rise 70% if it only supplies a power amplifier for the 5S, and 160% if it also maintains the antenna tuner slot it has for the iPhone 5. DA Davidson reported of a possible iPhone power amplifier win when upgrading RF Micro on May 30. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, June 10, 9:09 AM RF Micro (RFMD) +3.9% thanks to an upgrade to Strong Buy from Charter Equity. Shares fell on Friday following reports of Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4 build order cuts. Davidson defended RF Micro and rivals Skyworks (SWKS) and Avago (AVGO), claiming checks indicate S4 demand "has been as expected with the exception of possible slowing orders in Europe," and that any demand shortfall could be shifted to other phones. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 6, 4:27 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has been meeting with investors to temper Galaxy S4 expectations, and the consensus for Q2 and Q3 S4 sales has fallen to 20M/quarter from a prior 25M and 30M, writes Susquehanna. The firm adds Samsung is now placing a greater emphasis on mid-range sales (Chinese OEMs have been competing aggressively here), and sees lower S4 estimates as a negative for Broadcom (BRCM) and Maxim (MXIM). PANL, RFMD, SYNA, and ANAD could also be affected. On the flip side, Canaccord believes S4 sales have passed iPhone sales at Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA, and RBC offered an upbeat forecast last week. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 30, 7:02 PM Galaxy S4 sales will top 20M in Q2 and 80M by year's end, estimates RBC, citing checks indicating strong U.S. demand. If Samsung (SSNLF.PK) pulls that off, it would be on its way to hitting its target of 100M lifetime sales. RBC also expects industry smartphone sales to rise 27% this year to 870M, and 20% in 2014 to 1B+. Meanwhile, a Russian site reports Samsung's June 20 London event will reveal the Galaxy S4 Zoom, a 4.3" phone sporting a 16MP camera with a 10x optical zoom, and the Galaxy S4 Active, a water/dust-proof S4 variant sporting a Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon 600 CPU. Samsung's just-launched S4 Mini uses a Snapdragon 400. Other S4 suppliers: PANL, SYNA, ATML, RFMD, BRCM, ANAD, SWKS, TQNT. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 30, 5:25 PM More on DA Davidson's upgrade of RF Micro (RFMD +6.6%): In addition to benefiting from strong Galaxy S4 sales (previous), analyst Aalok Shah thinks there's "a possibility" RF Micro has secured a power amplifier design win for the expected low-cost iPhone. He's also optimistic about the chipmaker's cost-cutting efforts, which include new materials sourcing, improving capacity utilization, more in-house assembly work, and shuttering a U.K. fab. Oppenheimer and Canaccord upgraded shares two months ago. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, May 30, 12:52 PM RF Micro (RFMD +3.9%) jumps following an upgrade to Buy from DA Davidson. Shares were already higher thanks to rival Avago's (AVGO +10.6%) FQ2 beat and upbeat commentary. On its earnings call, Avago mentioned orders for the Galaxy S4 and other 4G devices partly offset Apple-related weakness, and that it expects a "very strong ramp" in iPhone-related orders in FQ3. Avago claims the technical demands of 4G phones are lifting sales of chips using its FBAR filters, which offer performance advantages over traditional SAW filters. RBC recently estimated Avago had a ~70% share of the FBAR market. Rivals Skyworks (SWKS +3.7%) and Anadigics (ANAD +4.5%) are also up, as is Apple-dependent Cirrus Logic (CRUS +3.1%). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, May 17, 11:27 AM Galaxy S4 sales will top 10M next week (less than a month after launching), says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun. The Galaxy S III took 50 days to crack 10M. Samsung thinks S4 sales could eventually reach 100M, or twice the 50M the S III has seen over its lifetime. Suppliers with decent exposure: RFMD, ANAD, PANL, QCOM, BRCM, SYNA. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 29, 12:59 PM As goes Apple, so goes Cirrus Logic (CRUS +7.1%). The audio codec chipmaker is taking off in sympathy with the customer than made up 85% of its March quarter revenue, one trading day after getting clocked due to downbeat remarks about FY14 sales. Likewise, iPhone/Galaxy S4 supplier Skyworks (SWKS +3.4%) is rallying following a post-earnings Friday decline caused by mixed guidance, and so is rival RF Micro (RFMD +3.2%). Broadcom (BRCM +2.5%), meanwhile, is adding to last week's strong post-earnings gains, fueled by a Q1 beat and solid guidance. The gains come even as another Apple supplier, Nam Tai, gets crushed due to weak guidance. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 12:18 PM Low expectations are aiding iPhone supplier TriQuint (TQNT +10.7%), which is surging after missing Q1 estimates and guiding for Q2 revenue of $185M-$190M and EPS of -$0.10 to -$0.12, below a consensus of $194.8M and -$0.08. On its earnings call, TriQuint noted mobile sales (57% of total) fell 30% Q/Q thanks to "seasonally low demand from our largest customer" (almost certainly Apple), but added sales to all other top-5 mobile clients grew, and claimed strong demand for advanced 4G power amplifiers and filters. Possibly up in sympathy: SWKS +2.7%. RFMD +1.6%. CRUS +3%.10.1% of TriQuint's float was shorted as of March 28. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 24, 1:31 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV is a superb phone, if one can cope with a cheap plastic feel and too many gimmicks. That seems to be the consensus from the first full reviews. The Verge praises the S IV's display, camera, and performance, but still considers the HTC One a better bet. "The Galaxy S4 is fast and impressive, but it's also noisy and complex." TechCrunch and Gizmodo deliver similar takes. But others (I, II) make the case that more is ultimately better (this mindset has worked for Samsung thus far). The reviews arrive as Sprint and T-Mobile state their S IV launches will be delayed due to inventory issues. Key suppliers: QCOM, BRCM, SYNA, PANL, ATML, RFMD, TQNT. (previous) 23 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 23, 5:22 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) Juniper (JNPR) expects Q2 revenue of $1.07B-$1.1B and EPS of $0.22-$0.26, below a consensus of $1.11B and $0.27. Enterprise IT weakness blamed, telecom healthy. 2) Cree (CREE) expects FQ4 revenue of $365M-$385M and EPS of $0.34-$0.40 vs. a consensus of $367.6M and $0.37. Gross margin expected to be ~39.5%, up from FQ3s 38.8%. 3)RF Micro (RFMD) expects FQ1 revenue of $285M-$290M and EPS of $0.07-$0.08, largely above a consensus of $265.8M and $0.07. JNPR -6.4% AH. CREE -7.3%. RFMD -3.3%. (Juniper PR) (Cree PR) (RF Micro PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 23, 4:08 PM RF Micro Device (RFMD): FQ4 EPS of $0.06 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $280.6M (+49% Y/Y) beats by $28.49M. Shares -0.9% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

$RFMD went up a lot lately. It's time to sell it and wait when it drops to $4.70-5.00. Should not take a long time for the drop in price. - View all 0 replies

John Rayhall: I think it goes back to 5.25. Thing about this stock other on that rare day when it spikes up or down big it doesn't seem to move at all. -
stocktrend: Anyone knows why ARMH is very weak today? Reported good earnings and upbeat guidance bought some today at close @28.11 for quick swing.

Windsun33: To be honest - in this market, consider any recommendation as short term. For now at least, "buy and hold" is pretty much a loser. -
DAG1996: yes i agree. just meant it helps to know whether you're speaking to someone who only day trades, only shorts, etc. guess i'm too picky
