- Friday, March 1, 10:40 AM Apple (AAPL -1.8%) and its suppliers slump after iPhone/iPad image sensor provider OmniVision (OVTI -10.9%) issues light guidance to go with its FQ3 beat. CRUS -4.2%. SWKS -1.9%. TQNT -1.7%. AVGO -2%. RFMD -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. On its FQ3 call, OmniVision would only attribute the guidance to "a seasonal trend of business," while adding smartphone market share trends are "highly, highly volatile right now." Like virtually all other Apple suppliers, OmniVision never mentions Apple by name. 21 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, February 22, 2:32 PM With the help of a chip stock rally, Skyworks (SWKS +3.1%) and Anadigics (ANAD +4.1%) are recouping some of the losses they saw on news of Qualcomm's (QCOM) RF front end. Lazard has upgraded RF Micro (RFMD +0.5%), arguing Qualcomm's solution is a "proof of concept" and that the company is unlikely to risk upsetting partners. Longbow thinks Qualcomm's use of bulk silicon and SAW filters will limit its solution to low-end devices. But Signals Research feels differently (.pdf). "Historically, a system-based solution wins since there are efficiencies that can’t otherwise be realized." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 21, 5:37 PM Don't sell Avago (AVGO -2.9%) on account of Qualcomm's (QCOM) new RF front end, says RBC's Doug Freedman. Avago's chips rely on FBAR filters, a market where it has an estimated ~70% share - TriQuint (TQNT -5.5%) is also mentioned as a BAW provider. Qualcomm's solution uses SAW filters, making them complementary, he argues. Discussing the solution, a Qualcomm exec touts its potential to handle any 4G band. Analyst Michael Thelander calls this a "huge business opportunity," but cautions some carriers/OEMs might not be keen on a phone supporting every band. Comment! [Tech]

[On the Move] - Thursday, February 21, 1:13 PM More on Raymond James' downgrade of Skyworks (SWKS -12.6%), TriQuint (TQNT -7.3%), and RF Micro (RFMD -14.6%): Analyst Tavis McCourt calls Qualcomm's (QCOM -1.1%) RF front end announcement a "bombshell," given the mobile chip giant's track record. However, he grants Qualcomm's entry into new markets is often met with "modest success" at first. He thinks the solution, which Qualcomm claims offers superior integration and lower design times, is aimed at China. OEM products containing it are due in 2H. ANAD -8.1%. AVGO -2.5%. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 21, 10:07 AM RF chipmakers Skyworks (SWKS -8.5%), TriQuint (TQNT -4%), and RF Micro (RFMD -12%) dive following downgrades from Raymond James. Also possibly hurting is Qualcomm's (QCOM -0.7%) introduction of a new RF front-end solution that features 3D packaging, covers 2G/3G/4G air interfaces, and includes a chip containing a CMOS (bulk silicon) power amplifier and antenna switch - many rival solutions use more exotic materials. Avago (AVGO -4.2%) and Anadigics (ANAD -5.4%) are also lower. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 30, 6:44 PM Some mobile chipmakers are ticking higher following strong calendar Q4 reports from Qualcomm and Skyworks. CRUS +0.9% AH. AVGO +1.3%. RFMD +1.2%. BRCM, TQNT, INVN, and OVTI could also end up moving. Meanwhile, strong reports from Citrix, Fortinet, and ServiceNow have produced modest gains in some enterprise IT names. RHT +1.1% AH. VMW +0.8%. FFIV +0.6%. INFA +1%. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 23, 1:25 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has passed Apple to become the world's top chip buyer, per Gartner: the firm estimates Samsung accounted for 8% of global chip purchases last year thanks to a 28.9% increase in consumption to $23.9B. Apple bought $21.4B worth of chips (7.2% share), and H-P $14B (4.7%). Samsung is trying to source more of those chips internally, as evidenced by last year's acquisitions (I, II). Some major Samsung mobile chip suppliers: SWKS, RFMD, MXIM, BRCM, QCOM. 1 Comment [Tech]

- Thursday, January 10, 10:27 AM Cirrus Logic (CRUS +3.2%) is trading higher this morning, and so are RF component makers Skyworks (SWKS +3.2%), TriQuint (TQNT +2.4%), and RF Micro (RFMD +2.9%). Guidance hikes from Nokia and Apple-dependent Dialog Semi seem to be contributing to the gains. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 10:50 AM RF component makers TriQuint (TQNT +4.1%), RF Micro (RFMD +3.7%), and (to a lesser extent) Skyworks (SWKS +1.6%) trade higher after Longbow gives each of them a Buy rating. Skyworks and TriQuint have slumped since mid-September, which happens to be around when the iPhone 5 launched - both chipmakers have iPhone 5 power amplifier design wins. RF Micro, whose shares were more depressed at the time, has fared better. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 12:59 PM More on Barclays' upgrade of RF Micro (RFMD +7.3%): Analyst Blayne Curtis think the chipmaker will capture the majority of an estimated $400M-$500M market for mobile phone antenna tuners in 2014. He also sees potential for RF Micro to win antenna switch and power amplifier designs for the next-gen iPhone; thinks the company could gain share on smartphones using Qualcomm and Broadcom baseband chips, and views low-end 3G smartphones as a growth driver. John Rayhall: I think it goes back to 5.25. Thing about this stock other on that rare day when it spikes up or down big it doesn't seem to move at all. -
stocktrend: Anyone knows why ARMH is very weak today? Reported good earnings and upbeat guidance bought some today at close @28.11 for quick swing.

Windsun33: To be honest - in this market, consider any recommendation as short term. For now at least, "buy and hold" is pretty much a loser. -
DAG1996: yes i agree. just meant it helps to know whether you're speaking to someone who only day trades, only shorts, etc. guess i'm too picky
