- Friday, August 10, 2012, 5:30 PM It's not just TSMC's (TSM) 28nm manufacturing capacity that's in short supply now: Digitimes reports capacity for prior-gen 40nm parts has also become tight, thanks to orders from Taiwan's MediaTek for chips used in Chinese smartphones. The report both drives home the impact Chinese smartphone sales are having on mobile chip demand, and suggests MediaTek is taking share from rival Spreadtrum (SPRD -11.7%), which just reported disappointing 3G chip sales. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 10:52 AM Unlike some rivals, RF Micro Devices' (RFMD -18%) core power amplifier business isn't exposed to Apple. But it is exposed to Nokia, RIM, and HTC, and as the guidance accompanying its Q2 report demonstrates, and that's worse. Blaming macro issues and delayed smartphone launches (BlackBerry 10?), RF Micro expects Q3 revenue to be flat to down 5% Q/Q, and EPS to come in at $0.00-$0.01. That's easily below a consensus for a 10% gain and $0.04. Northland, UBS, and Craig-Hallum are downgrading. (transcript) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 5:18 PM Wireless chipmakers are moving higher after Qualcomm and Skyworks post earnings and guidance that were better than many expected, given widespread reports of slowing smartphone growth and component order cuts. TQNT +3.5%. RFMD +2.6%. CRUS +1.6%. OVTI +1.5%. INVN +1.6%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 5:56 PM Many analysts have suggested going long on Apple's supply chain over the years. Barclays, however, thinks now is a good time to bet on Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) supply chain, given the Korean conglomerate's surging smartphone production, and an expected lull in iPhone builds ahead of a fall refresh. BRCM, SWKS, RFMD, and MXIM are mentioned as firms with healthy Samsung exposure, though the first two are also heavily exposed to Apple. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 12:20 PM Mobile phone sales will come in well below normal seasonality in Q2 and Q3, predicts Raymond James' Tavis McCourt. Nonetheless, McCourt, who's far from alone in expressing such a view, expects sales to rebound sharply in Q4 with the help of new phone launches. As a result, he thinks Q2 could represent a bottom for chipmakers such as Qualcomm (QCOM), Skyworks (SWKS), and RF Micro (RFMD), whose shares have already been hit by reports of order cuts. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 6:36 PM Barclays joins Goldman in cutting its mobile industry forecasts. Total mobile phone shipments are now expected to grow 6% in 2012 and 2013 (8% prior), and smartphone shipments are expected to grow 42% in 2012 (46% prior). Nokia's warning and signs of slowing iPhone sales are cited as reasons. The firm is also cutting its June and September quarter estimates for Qualcomm's (QCOM) baseband chip shipments (already pressured by supply issues) by 3M-4M. (previous) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, June 22, 2012, 10:21 AM In addition to starting Skyworks with a Buy, Canaccord's Mike Walkley is starting rivals RF Micro (RFMD -3.2%) and TriQuint (TQNT +1.9%) at Hold (I, II). Walkley thinks RF Micro's business, hurt by declining sales of Nokia and 2G Chinese phones, is turning a corner on the back of smartphone demand, but he doesn't like the company's valuation. As for TriQuint, he likes its product line and RF filter tech, but thinks higher capacity utilization might not happen until 2014. (yesterday) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 21, 2012, 4:34 PM Backing up a recent Jefferies note, Digitimes reports many top phone vendors (nearly everyone besides Apple) have slashed their orders to Taiwanese suppliers, with the cutbacks expected to continue into Q3. Slowing North American smartphone growth and weak Euro phone demand are seen as the culprits. Some component suppliers saw big losses today - RFMD -6.5%, SWKS -5.4%, TQNT -6.6%, QCOM -3.3% - but then again, so did many other chip stocks (SOXX -4.1%). 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 11:36 AM Smartphone vendors Samsung, Huawei, ZTE, HTC, Nokia, and Research In Motion have slashed component orders by 5%-20% due to "an unexpected slowdown in smartphone sales," believes Jefferies' Peter Misek after conducting supply chain checks. If true, that's a negative for both phone and component vendors. Separately, Raymond James' Tavis McCourt is cutting estimates for Qualcomm (QCOM) on a belief 2Q/3Q phone volumes "could be flattish from 1Q levels." (also) 5 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 10:05 AM Research In Motion (RIMM -5%) slumps in the wake of Nokia's (NOK -14.7%) warning, as investors decide what's bad for Symbian is also bad for BlackBerry. The decline comes as RIM adds TPG Capital partner/former Goldman exec Timothy Dattels to its board. RF Micro Devices (RFMD -2.8%), a major power amplifier supplier to Nokia, is also selling off. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 7, 2012, 3:59 PM RF Micro Devices (RFMD +2.5%) is raised to Buy from Neutral at Davenport, which says strong demand for the chip maker's products leave it with the potential to meet or exceed Wall Street expectations in coming months. Noting RFMD is a top supplier to smartphone manufacturers, the firm expects it to remain the lead supplier this year for Samsung. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 4:57 PM RF Micro Devices (RFMD +13.2%), which surged today thanks to an Avian upgrade, says it will outsource its chip wafer manufacturing ops to U.K.-based wafer supplier IQE. RF Micro's profits have dived thanks in large part to top customer Nokia's woes, and the company is trying to cut costs as a result. It expect the outsourcing deal to result in a non-cash charge of $0.02-$0.03/share. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
