- Friday, June 7, 1:24 PM Jefferies is out with some price target revisions and color after conducting a "global pharma review." Rundown: Top U.S. pick Abbott Laboratories (ABT +1.9%) reiterated at Buy, PT lowered to $44 from $46; top global pick Novartis (NVS +0.3%) has "positive growth inflection potential" in FY14; AbbVie (ABBV +0.6%), Roche (RHHBY.OB +2.5%), and Sanofi (SNY +0.5%) offer "attractive entry points" but ABBV's PT is lowered to $51 from $54; Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ +0.2%) PT lowered to $91 from $97; Merck (MRK -0.3%) has its price target raised to $56 from $54 and Pfizer (PFE +1.3%) has its target lowered slightly to $32. - Monday, June 3, 9:36 AM Roche's (RHHBY.OB) Avastin drug failed to extend the survival of patients with a brain cancer called glioblastoma in a trial of 637 subjects. Those who received Avastin and chemotherapy lived a median of 15.7 months vs 16.1 months for those given just chemotherapy. However, Avasatin did help women with an aggressive form of cervical cancer live almost four months longer. Roche's shares -3% in Zurich. (PR I, II) Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 30, 4:19 AM The FDA has approved GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Tafinlar and Mekinist drugs for treating melanoma that has spread or can't be surgically removed. The drugs, which are aimed at patients with certain gene mutations, are expected to generate annual sales of $622M by 2016, and will compete with Roche's (RHHBY.OB) Zelboraf and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) Yervoy. GSK's shares -0.4% in London. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, May 28, 8:45 AM Scientists have established that a new strain of bird flu that has killed 36 people in China has become resistant to Roche's (RHHBY.OB) Tamifulu and other medicines that use neuraminidase inhibitors, until now the only known treatment option for the virus. In one patient, evidence exists that the flu's resistance may have occurred as a result of the drug treatment. Roche shares are -0.2% in Zurich. (Lancet report) 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Thursday, May 16, 1:39 PM Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI -20.5%) gets slammed by cautious comments out of JPMorgan today, saying that investors are "growing increasingly skittish" ahead of INFI's pending presentation at June's ASCO cancer conference. The company is expected to release Phase 1 clinical safety and tolerability data for IPI-145, its experimental leukemia drug, and while the investment bank predicts "a good showing," it may not be enough to outshine Gilead (GILD -2.3%), Pharmacyclics (PCYC -2.5%) or Roche (RHHBY.OB -0.6%). 3 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 10:33 AM The FDA has approved a companion diagnostic test for Roche's (RHHBY.OB +0.5%) cancer drug Tarceva, which detects certain gene mutations present in some non-small cell lung cancers. The cobas epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, Mutation Test is the first FDA-approved companion diagnostic that detects a kind of gene mutation present in about 10% of non-small cell lung cancers, and, together with the drug, will be used as a first line treatment. Comment! [Healthcare, Global & FX]
- Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? Morningstar's Damien Cover says there are two primary reasons: FX impact, especially from the yen, and intensified generic competition from patent losses. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, April 26, 11:12 AM Medivation (MDVN +0.6%) and Astellas Pharma (ALPMF.PK) say the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended approval for the oral androgen receptor inhibitor XTANDI (approved in the U.S.) for adult men with progressed metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Other CHMP news: Pfizer's (PFE -1.1%) arthritis pill Xeljanz is rejected (appeal to come), Roche (RHHBY.OB +0.2%) and Curis' (CRIS +4.5%) Erivedge for basal cell carcinoma gets a recommendation, and Vivus' (VVUS +3.7%) ED drug Spedra gets a positive review. - Thursday, April 11, 3:13 AM Roche (RHHBY.OB): Q1 sales +5.1% to 11.6B Swiss francs ($12.4B), above consensus of 11.5B francs. Pharmaceuticals sales +7% to 9.2B francs, diagnostics +1% to 2.4B francs; Herceptin (breast cancer) 1.57B francs; Tamiflu +84% to 335M francs, due to severe flu season in U.S. Reiterates that 2013 sales will rise at same rate as in 2012, while core EPS will increase faster than revenues. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Healthcare]
- Monday, April 8, 9:26 AM Isis Pharmaceuticals (ISIS) forms an alliance with Roche (RHHBY.OB) to utilize Isis' technology to develop innovative treatments for Huntington's disease. The companies will look to advance Isis' lead drug candidate which works by blocking the huntingtin protein. Isis will receive an upfront payment of $30M and may reap $362M in milestone payments and licensing fees going forward. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Friday, April 5, 4:06 PM Roche (RHHBY.OB) has, for the first time, agreed to let scientists examine hundreds of pages of clinical trial data for Tamiflu. Some have suggested the flu treatment — which brought in $3.4B in revenue during the Swine Flu panic of 2009 — contributes to suicidal thoughts, a claim Roche strongly denies. The data will be made available after it is edited "to ensure patient confidentiality." Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, April 4, 4:45 AM The cost of caring for people with dementia is $157-215B a year and could double by 2040, a study from RAND Corp. estimates. The cost of dementia treatment is $109B - above the $102B spent on heart disease and the $77B on cancer - with the other dementia expenses used for long-term day-to-day care. Companies that develop drugs for Alzheimer's disease and other conditions include Pfizer (PFE), Eli Lilly (LLY), J&J (JNJ) and Merck (MRK). 5 Comments [Healthcare]
- Thursday, March 28, 5:21 PM Bacteria that live in the gut change after gastric-bypass surgery and may aid in weight loss, according to a recent study. Gastric surgery helps people lose weight by shrinking the size of the stomach and making it tougher to absorb calories, now scientists think it may also adjust gastrointestinal bacteria, contributing to weight loss and raising the possibility for less-drastic obesity treatment. 7 Comments [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, March 5, 8:42 AM Roche (RHHBY.OB) Chairman and former CEO Franz Humer says he plans to step down next year after serving in the role since 2001. Humer made the surprise announcement at the company's annual meeting today. Roche intends to nominate a successor in the autumn, although it won't be CEO Severin Schwan, as the firm plans to keep the the offices of chairman and chief executive separate. (PR) Comment! - Monday, March 4, 2:42 AM As expected, Swiss voters have approved an "anti-fat cat" initiative that allows investors to hold binding votes every year on executive pay at listed companies, and enable them to block large payouts at the start and end of a manager's employment. Executives who break the new law could face hefty fines and up to three years in jail. 5 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories]
